Kids are little disease spreaders. With this thing it seems like they are either totally asymptomatic or only get very mildly ill, so that's good in one way and bad in another.

If we figure we're just trying to shift the peak of the curve and not really reduce the total number who get sick, closing schools (maybe sporadically) makes sense.

That wasn't what I was saying. I think you're going to see school closures for this. I mean currently CDC or state guidelines say if more than 10% of the kids in a school get flu, you should close for at least 4 days. My kid's school had to close earlier this year from a Thursday through a weekend. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see something similar for this, and probably with a much lower threshold.

Not because "omg the chirrens are gonn die" but because that stretches the spread of the disease out over time.

Closing a school because one kid maybe coming in contact with someone who was sick isn't "sporadically closing schools" it is panicking.

The fact is it's a virus and viruses jump from one host to the other to stay alive. Whether it be a 6 year old who doesn't get sick or an elderly person it kills it's still spreading.

If you want to stop the spread don't give it the opportunity to jump.

"Flatten the curve". Look it up.

Kids come back from spring break having traveled all over, many unknown settings.

We should be looking at S Korea as a country that flattened the curve and dealt very effectively with something that could have been a whole lot worse.

No one is saying this as Armageddon - not even those deciding to close the schools for a few days. But it ain't "just the flu" either.

A friend of mine teaches at St Thomas. They don't have student who was exposed, 1st or 2nd hand. It's completely a precaution.

Happened with my kids school.

They cancelled Thursday/Friday for no really reason given. I think people are just afraid of what's going to happen

I already rescheduled once. I was supposed to report last Friday but had a conflict. The reschedule dates weren't that far out, either.

I'll go if it's not cancelled. I'm mainly just commenting on the somewhat arbitrary decisions of what gets cancelled and what doesn't.
