In an absolute worst case scenario, how big of a blast radius are we talking? Asking for a Patty.

This information is likely available in their RMP which should be public info thru Community Right to Know.

I'm can't believe that as soon as that fire started they didn't start immediately moving the product in the surrounding tanks either to other terminals or at least to tanks located in manifolds far away from the fire.

1) You've got to have empty space to put it. Maybe they did, maybe they didn't. There's also reaction and cross contamination issues to think about, though cross contamination is way down the list as product can be replaced.

2) The safety of people is important. You don't want to send them out to a burning tank farm next to a potential bomb to line up valves.
I'm completely ignorant on it all but would ships be able to come in and temporarily hold a lot of it? I know that would jack up distribution for a while, but it seems worth it.

Then you run the risk of having a pipeline and vessel fire

Man, thanks for the information and being on top of this thread. Seems like you're dead set in the middle of the Process Safety business.

I thought when in the pipe itself its not flammable because there's no oxygen.

So what happens if it gets to the benzene tanks?

You can load out 50,000 bbl to a double-tow barge at problaly 4,000-5,000 BPH and ITC could probably load out to 2-3 barges at a time.

Could get this product on a 300,000 barrel ship at 20,000 BPH.

Benzene will f you up. It's cancerous. I think it'll also cause an explosion.

The wind shift from this morning has saved them in terms of the fire spreading. Current direction is keeping the main heat from the fires over already burned areas. That wasn't the case a few hours ago when it looked like the other diked area of tanks were in real danger of going up.

There's always a place to put it, either onsite in other tanks or offsite. There's tons of other terminals on the ship channel that stores these components. Can always load it on barges too. These are only 80mb tanks.

I'm guessing you are an engineer and not in ops

Pretty cool solution I was reading about this morning that might've worked for this had it been deployed/in use?

"Hey Kirby/FMT/Higgins/Settoon, can I get 20 prompt barges to load gasoline components on the channel?"

"Sure, why so many so soon?"

"My terminal is on fire"

Things looking more favorable now. Funny how quickly these things can change.

Not to be mean, but what's the HCC going to do in this situation?

This falls on Deer Park and local emergency response. Not like there is a Harris County FD to call out and/or a HC emergency crew to handle things (fire wise). Might be able to get HFD to assist if they need help.

For those of us that don't have the info you do, can you expand on the "looking more favorable now" comment?

I"m not worried about explosions and what not, just want something to help the day pass.

HFD would help but they'd lobby the public for a raise first.

There is a Harris County Hazmat Team, which falls under the Harris County Fire Marshal's Office. The Hazmat team is a regional response team covering any hazmat incidents outside the city. Between them and the FMO, there is a presence at this incident.

I'm in the Towboat/barge industry. We offload at ITC. There is ZERO chance we are sending equipment and crew to load at that dock under current conditions.

This thread needs more pics but not just pretty smoke pictures.

(Probably too much to hope for. Which is kinda funny since everyone had a camera these days but they are designed primarily to be capable of wide angle shots for selfies. Great for scenics of smoke but bad for showing risks those fighting it face)

Think they are marching on City Hall today. No word if Buzbee has lent them his tank.

The fire is making for an interesting juxtaposition with the mayor's announcement of closing of firehouses and FD layoffs. The two aren't really connected but not sure most people know that.

Turner has become a king of bad optics and having another public fight with firefighters while a thick cloud of black smoke moves across the upper atmosphere of the city is just another example of Turner stepping on his own dick.

I figured that might be the case, but what's the point of having the CEO (harris county judge) at an emergency? Unless giving a brief, I would assume most people would ignore the non-experienced people's opinion.

I doubt emmitt could do anything other than what's being done.

Out of town for work, any reports on how friendswood fared?

Much appreciated.

I don't know about Friendswood, but some of the SAHMs on the Moms of Pearland Facebook page are FREAKING THE **** OUT about sending their kids to school with this big dangerous cloud a whole 23 miles away from us.
