Lol, you mean a Chinese watch that they slapped "France" on to.
yes, that. I do wish their design team would just go work for a better brand, cuz they have some amazing aesthetics that are super unique. again, I haven't or won't buy any, but nice designs.

I'm sure this has been covered before, but lots of posts here and I'm not very good at using the search function.

If I were looking to acquire a certain Rolex, what is the best avenue? Online, in person at brick & mortar, etc?

I have a bronze Christopher Ward that I really like. It was very bright when received but only took a couple weeks to start and patina. Its more muted now but I still love it. No staining of my skin but the back is stainless. My understanding is that the extent of staining or patina depends on the bronze blend but I have really enjoyed it as its a little more unique.

I don't have a bronze watch but from what I've heard you can also rather easily restore it to original condition which would be kind of cool to do every once in a while when you're ready for a refresh.

New watch day was Monday! Add me to the list of happy FTAC customers. Great experience, and I will 100% be a repeat offender when the time comes for my next purchase. Sadly, this watch is not staying with me as it is a gift for someone else, but I just had to throw it on and grab a pic for you junkies.

Traded my SD Red for this 2022 Sub 41mm. Love it. Perfect size for my wrist. The SD too chunky. Also love the inkiness of the bezel insert and dial on the current sub iteration.

I had an SD. I agree on the chunkiness

Howdy All: my 17-year old son has suddenly gotten the urge to buy a "nice" watch for himself. He's a Senior and has busted his tail building a professional window cleaning business over the last couple years. He's looking for a nice used Rolex - who best in the Houston area to advise my son on his search? I see FTAC2011 mentioned - just text him? I don't have stars….

damn...a Roly for a 17 year old is aggressive.

He should buy a Tag as his gateway drug. Don't want him getting shivved in the lunch line.

Yeah, it's his money, but I've tried to advise that 17 is not the age to start a 'conspicuous consumption' habit! I told him I'd support it if he also fully funds a Roth IRA this year.

So I'm just trying to connect him to someone to help advise him and find a good watch.

This boggles my mind and shows a fundamental misunderstanding of how luxury products should be viewed. (He does realize he can't afford it because you fund his entire life and will for years to come, right?)

But hey, not my kid.

So much good stuff happening here - well done! I'm all for spending, saving, and giving, so I appreciate your idea of maybe buying something nice after saving. This image can make it real. If we round up to $90 on the first bar below, $5k could either be used to buy a watch now OR, invested well, could turn into $450K at retirement. How much does he want that watch? More than he would appreciate half a million later? Maybe!

Maybe try and get him sold on the rolex as a milestone piece (his first million net worth? Or at least first 100k in the bank?) and instead show him some of the cool pieces he can get for like 1k that may not impress the girls but will result in a collection that cost (but is not worth) more than the rolex and also get dragged into random conversations with weird dudes that are also into watches. Wait...

I can't believe all the watch enthusiasts trying to talk a young man out of buying something that reminds him daily of his success in building a business. He may look down at it every day and remind him how much he hustled for it and hustle that much more just reminiscing. Maybe 10x of 450k 50 years later.

I say good for him, congrats on the achievement, and I'm happy to help out if that's the route he wants to take!

If he has built his own professional window cleaning business...you could be underestimating his income.
I sold a pretty nice home to a 19 yr old kid recently who had been living on his own since 17. Busted his tail and made it happen. You never know.

You can work your whole life saving to be rich in the tomorrow that isn't guaranteed.

I say you should take advantage of the power of compounding to put yourself in a little bit better wealth position each year, treat retirement as an insurance policy against the day you're unable to work anymore.

But if you're doing those two things, live life while you're young enough to still enjoy it. We all know there are many (most) purchases that have a far worse depreciation than watches.

I don't have issue with a 17 yr old buying an expensive timepiece, I just know I would have made fun of one of my friends buying a rolex at 17.

At 17 you don't know what you want. That watch isn't going anywhere. You could buy it at 17, 18 or 35.

I agree. Let him get something that shows hard work pays off. Teach him about investing in the interim. If he's smart enough to work hard for a nice payout, he's smart enough to begin investing in the near future.
