Rolex's are their own currency. Sure it won't compound but it's not depreciating like a car. He has his own business, saved and if he needs to sell it, he will likely get his money back and perhaps some more.

Let that kid have a Rolex. He earned it. Let him see that busting your ass = rewards.

Tomorrow isn't guaranteed. Get it now and take advantage of his circumstance. Once he gets married, has kids, takes on a mortgage…..it will be hard to justify buying a Rolex because of so many other competing priorities.

Tragedy can strike at anytime. Live life to the fullest.

The cool thing about the Rolex is he can wear it literally every day for the rest of his life if he maintains it. Few things you can say that about at the age of 17.

Don't let him buy a Rolex… that's an absurd purchase for a youngster

Have him a Glashutte Original seaQ instead. Preferably a blue panorama date

Lots of good discussion here, thanks! No doubt I have advised against it given what that amount could become down the road.

And yes, I let him know dropping $5K-8K on a watch seems like no big deal to him because he has all of his expenses paid right now. The watch won't compound but may hold or increase in value. I'd prefer he achieve a bigger goal like graduate college or something before splurging. Plus, he has a goal to buy a duplex or rent house while in college….a watch purchase now delays that goal.

I could be. But does all of that account for the fact he lives at home, has every expense paid for (car, home, food, most expenses), and then he is going to college, where it sounds like dad is paying for it? Can he afford that watch now?

And then there are some of y'all (not you swimmer) saying that somehow this is a reward for hard work. All that watch should signify is that he was able to stand up on dads shoulders and make an irresponsible purchase at a young age.

Not saying the kid doesn't have a killer work ethic at that age. And will likely be financially well off while young. I'm sure he a great young man.

But, more than likely, he isn't there yet. And that's the point of a luxury item. An item that is wholly unnecessary, but it's very nice and you can afford it because you have so much disposal income.

I get the other side of the coin…. And just say grip it and rip it. Just not sure what lesson that is teaching a 17 year old.

But hey, not my kid.

When I was a young man, my parents promised me a new puppy for my 10th birthday

They took me to adoption day at PetZone, all of the beautiful dogs were laid out; schnauzer's, collies, retrievers, Corgi's you name it.

I had almost decided on one when I saw way in the back, a disheveled hump of fur. A poodle, with mange, tics, fleas, carpal tunnel syndrome, but yet despite these ailments, a determined gleam in his milky cataracted eye.

That day I took a chance on the literal underdog. Today that poodle is the CEO of a Fortune 500 with a portfolio of 180 doors of rental units and a small window washing side hustle.

So the mangy poodle is a CEO now? That's amazing. Especially without being able to speak or having opposable thumbs.

Brother you should read the ridiculous stories on LinkedIn, they're hilarious.

"I hired a guy who couldn't read, couldn't talk, was addicted to fentanyl, and smelled like garbage. Today he's my number one producer. Don't judge a book by its cover #blessed #hungry #letseat "

Of course not! The puppy succumbed to its carpal tunnel within weeks and, overcome by grief and unencumbered by a sickly dog, the boy focused intently on building his businesses to get where he is today. (The success of which is debatable. 180 rental doors sounds miserable)

I joined the reserves in 1988 to pay for college, and I saved a little money. The Navy Exchange catalog had a Tudor sub for less than $1,500 and I wanted it. I decided to be responsible and didn't get it. I could have sold that watch a couple years ago for 5x what I would have paid. Let the kid get his watch.

Chrono24 has late '80s and early '90s Tudor subs between $5k and $8k now, and the market has cooled a little bit. So maybe a little off, but not too far.

Yeah, if in good condition, maybe you could sell it for $5-6k now , but $1500 in 1988 is worth about $4k today, so not much of an investment. Meanwhile $1500 invested in the S&P 500 in 1988 would yield around $77k if left untouched till today. I don't think I need to remind anyone on here, but probably not great to think of watches as investments.

I wouldn't ever buy a watch as an investment. But, at least with a Rolex, he'll be minimizing his risk. Not many items you can buy when you're young and keep forever or sell for around what you paid.

Are these the watches that FTAC2011 is gifting all of us?
