Imagine someone asks you what time it is and you have to tell them "I don't know" while they're looking at your watch and wondering if you're mental.

The correct answer is "time for you to get a watch"

I think Dan Henry uses Seiko movements, so that amount of inaccuracy tells me there's something wrong big time, and not what you should expect.

Anyone have suggestions on "micro brands" ? I bought this one a couple of years ago because it was really inexpensive and was really well built. However, the damned thing is about 20 minutes fast per day. I like looking at off brand watches, mostly because I'm not yet at the point to justify a 5k plus watch.

I own one of these. Its been a great watch

Have narrowed down my interest to moonwatch and a grand seiko. Can a snowflake be had around msrp? Anyone know about the grand seiko supply/demand. I can't imagine it's anything like the Swiss world

I was at my AD (Ben bridge in Austin) yesterday picking up a watch and they had a case full of Grand Seikos. I'm guessing they are much easier to get at a discount compared to others. They basically were fully stocked on Breitling, GS, Tag, Etc. everything but Rolex and Tudor.

It's nothing like the Swiss brands demand-wise, but GS also produces only 3,500 pieces per year (compared to ~1 million for Rolex, for example).

Where are you getting that from? I find this almost impossible to believe.

He missed a zero according to my quick Google search.
Grande Seiko does approximately 35,000 pieces a year while Rolex does between 800k and 1M (3/4 Rolex, 1/4 Tudor). Heck, Omega 500k.

Interesting how the luxury brands pitch rare and hand crafted while reality is mass produced numbers.

I got it from this list:

35-50k seems more reasonable though.

Oh yeah, that ranking is terrible. No way Rolex should be over the next 3, Omega and Grand Seiko way too low, lots of other problems with their rankings.

I love Rolex but you are buying the design and heritage. They are extremely well made but it is a mass market brand that relies much more heavily on automation compared to AP, PP, VC or even others like ALS and GS.

I own some of these brands and they should not be on a top anything list
Montblanc
Hamilton
Glycine
Tissot
Rado
Louis Vuitton
Corum
Tag Heuer

The top four are right just not in the right order

Lange should be 5

It depends on what your criteria are - "Top" Luxury Watch Brands is very ambiguous. If you're talking about desirability and mass appeal - then Rolex is #1. But yes, if we're listing watch-making chops then I don't know where they should fall - definitely outside the Top 5 and maybe even outside the Top 10.

Rolex is hard to categorize amongst the other watch makers because they really occupy their own unique category.

But I agree the list is terrible - as mentioned the list you make depends on your criteria, but I struggle to find consistency in what that lists criteria actually are.

It depends - if we're talking about value/quality/heritage, then I absolutely think several of those belong on a Top 60 list.

But this brings up something I've been pondering: Could Hamilton elevate their positioning in the watch industry if they relocated back to the US?

Obviously "Swiss made" caries a lot of cache, and maybe that appeal alone in the broader world market is worth it. But with their US origin and their historic ties to our railroads - if they moved back to the US and tried to cut out a market as the premier US luxury watch, couldn't that earn them a niche that's not really being served right now?

German and Japanese watchmakers are finding popularity, with the power of the Swatch group and their history, I can't help but wonder if Hamilton is missing an opportunity.

I suspect they like Hamilton where it is. It's their entry level brand to decent mechanical watches.

Feel like I've seen some fancier Timex ads that might be trying to fill that void too.

Fascinatingly hilarious story of losing a Submariner while feeding goats at the zoo, and it only gets dumber from there...

I'm not real experienced in using Reddit so I'm still trying to find the full story. But essentially it goes like this - a guy goes to the London Zoo and takes off his Rolex to feed some goats. Apparently sets it down somewhere and loses it. He posts to Reddit trying to find out if goats eat stainless steel sports watches and how he can get it back.

Later posts an update that the Zoo found it, but in doing so he accidentally posts his full name.

Third post is an update that someone else showed up to the Zoo and used his name to pick up his watch. They have it on video but no other info.

Seems like opinions range on whether it's just a massive troll job or truly one of the dumbest series of events. If it's a troll though, it's mfbarnes level since the guy has been posting on Reddit watch forums for years and has seemed "normal" until now.
