A lot of the bourbon folks I know switched to rum but that is also crazy now. I really liked armagnac there at the end.

It's more expensive for sure, but as long as you're willing to spend $100 or so you can walk into a decent liquor store and get a bottle without much effort.

I think eventually supply will catch up, but obviously a slow-moving process. I think there have been a few new distilleries that have opened in Kentucky recently.

What's the opinion on here of Steinhart?

solid watch company for the money. They have a bit of a negative connotation because Steinhart fanboys will run into premium watch threads boasting "My steinhart is better than Blancpain" and their homages are a little bit too 1:1, but they make a decent product.

Maybe.

Smart distilleries will do exactly what Rolex is doing. They'll control supply to keep it rare and luxurious and drive up the value. They could invest capital and turn on the *****ets and supply 10X the current number of bottles, but the exclusivity and price would go down.

So they'll probably double or triple capacity slowly and keep the price at 20x what it was before the bourbon craze kicked off. Greater return on investment, lower risk, longer run of popularity. It's just the average guy gets fooked. If it was you or I running the show, we'd do it too.

Hopefully some day I'm on the other end of that kind of scenario.

FTAC? Just curious, but do you do resales for people also? If I wanted to try and move a watch, do you do that?

Yes I can buy your watch or I can consign it for a commission as long as we are on the same page on value. Depending on the watch that is.

If it's a fossil you know you can trade it in for 50% off any new fossil?

(J/k... what are you selling? Post them here!!!)

I bought one watch off chrono, it was a little bit of a pain and scary because you have to wire transfer the money through their escrow service, there's also a bit of buyers premium, iirc? But my transaction all went smoothly

Let me ask a question about Hamilton.

I've been looking at them as a more budget conscious choice than some on here. Being an automatic watch you would still need to get it served every 3-5 years. It wouldn't be too many years before the total cost of the services are more than the cost of the watch. Would it be smarter/cheaper to just replace the watch every decade or so when you notice it losing time and never get it serviced?

I hate **** being disposable but yeah, probably. I have a Steinhart that I love. Probably spent $4-500 on it jn 2011. Somehow the crown unscrew ed a few years ago and I noticed it had water in it after being in the pool. Had it serviced because I love the watch. But it's really starting to lose time again and I don't think I'll have it serviced again. Just doesn't make sense.

I don't service my Omega's that often so I'm the wrong one to answer, but I would go with the later.

Hamilton owner here who's sent his watch off for service. If I had to do it again, I'd just use the money I'd pay for service and buy another watch.

If you like the watch, then buy it (or service it). Looking at your hobbies or passions as something that need to make absolute financial sense is a bummer way to look at it, in my opinion.

I'm looking at selling my Tag Silverstone. I don't really wear it that often. I have my Gulf Monaco that as soon as it gets serviced I will wear more often. But these days I alternate between a watch my wife got me from Tiffany's for our wedding and my Snoopy Timex. I have my dive watch that I wear when I am around saltwater and another less bulky watch that I wear when I am around freshwater. I never wear my 1926 Omega trench watch because it is a little obnoxious to wear when you sit in your spare bedroom typing all day. I have small kids and these days they like to pull on my watches and I don't want them chewing on my nice watches, so they stay in the box. It is a nice watch but especially these days that I rarely leave the house, there are days that I don't even put a watch on.

You'd think if more folks came around to the mech watch world, then eventually they'd need to service their movements, and the market would grow for new people to provide that service. But we all refer people to the same 2 or 3 shops servicing watches. So there clearly is NOT a robust market out there for people needing service.

So yeah, in the midrange there is absolutely a break-even on fixing or buy another midrange. At the low-range, there is no breakeven. No one buying a $200 Seiko 5 is ever going to pay for a servicing, ever. Those are a throwaway or stick it in a drawer like your grandad did.

I think the reality is that most people don't service their mechanical watches. Definitely not as much as they should. Most people are pretty ignorant about them. I have known some guys to have some nice expensive mechanical watches and didn't know they were supposed to service them.

And also some people that treat their watches pretty crappy. Guys that buy nice watches for their wives and they take them swimming??? Like cartier watches.

Plus it is a pretty specific skill. It takes a lot of time and interest and these days kids just want to type on a computer or being an influencer.

My dad wore rolex for about 30 years and never serviced a one of them. I remember one time him telling me "damn thing stopped, it finally broke" when he wasn't wearing it fpr a week when he was having radiation. I wound it for him and it started ticking and he was like "wow".

In 30 years he'd never depleted the power reserve once.

Also, I have decided to part with 1 of my watches that I haven't worn in forever.

I bought this watch from my buddy James Boukajli who owns River's Edge Jewelers in NJ. They were absolutely hammered during the beginning of Covid and he was desperate to raise cash so I bought a Black Nedu and a Blue Nedu from him, both BALL brand (so I have two Balls hyuk)

The blue one gets some wrist time, but the black one has maybe been worn once since middle 2020.

Rivers Edge is a BALL AD so I have the full set with the pelican of whatever box and all cards and everything.

These things have an MSRP of 4500, but I got it for half off. I'm more hoping someone will want it for their first nice watch, so I'll sell it for $1,000 bucks, and you don't even have to send me money right now if you can't, I don't even care if you throw me $50/month. My only request is that you don't buy it to flip it.

How you gonna' call me out of nowhere like that?? I feel a little friendly thread rivalry brewing…

Honestly I thought about it. They look cool, but not really my style. And with the new big purchase, I think I ought to just enjoy and revel in this one for a while before jumping into something else. Let someone else win this one.

That's a sweet offer though Joe, hope you find someone who'll really appreciate it.
