Firehouse Burger was true greatness

Columbo's Pizza on Mockingbird, was an hole in the wall place down from Campisi's. the old man running the joint would pour pitchers of dark beer all night for anybody.

is Panchos still around? raise the flag and get more food, a teenager's dream come true.

Truthfully, I miss more places in BCS than I do in DFW. Toms, La Tacaria, etc.

I didn't go to White Water a lot -- 3 or 4 times -- but I liked it better than what the 6 flags one has become. Even though I don't get up there much, I sort of miss the Chilis in Las Colinas. It opened when I was in HS and we lived in that place. There was a sporting goods store that I've forgotten the name of that had a bunch of stores around the area about 15 years ago. I liked it better than Oshmans at the time.

I also miss Brook Mays. I liked having a music store where I knew people, could go in and sample pianos, and also pick up the sheet music I needed. Terribly run company but also in a business that few have an appreciation for true quality.

There is a Pancho's in Arlington, just south of I20, maybe Green Oaks exit, down from Big Lots the used to be Winn Dixie. Across the street from the fabulous sno-cone shack.

I think it is funny that Richardson Square is back down to just a Sears. I wonder if Valley View will go the same route...just fields and a Sears when I was a kid.

I remember Addison being an airport, a True Value Hardware, and a broken down old school house that is now the Magic Time Machine.

Does anyone remember the huge peace sign painted on a retaining wall at 75 and 635?

Ribby - what era was that? I seem to recall those in the late 80s.

What was that place at European Crossing (NW Hwy / 35 area)?
Xan
How long do you want to ignore this user?
OA, the basement and Club A were late 80's early 90's. Im not sure about the place off 35.

Also one that i forgot was 2826

We took our grandson to Chuck E. Cheese by Valley View last week. It was the first time I've been around Valley View in quite some time. The place is definitely on life support. I don't think it will survive in its present form very long. When we moved here from Houston in the early 70's, Sears was the only store on that site. A Target store and Doran Chevrolet were close by and that's just about all the retail there was in that area.

I'm just wondering if big, sprawling malls are going to be a thing of the past before too many more years. Prestonwood and Richardson Square are now locations of big box stores, and that seems to be what is popular.

Ag88Man - my dad worked at Sears at Valley View when it first opened back in the 60's - we couldn't figure out why they built that big Sears out there in the middle of no where - there was nothing else around it back then.

mhayden - Zeke's is greatness. I don't get to eat there much anymore since I changed jobs and moved back downtown - and I miss that. Another woman and I would split the 2-piece cod with mushrooms and corn nuggets.

I remember the days Valley View had nothing but that Sears, Doran and the Dallas North Tollway stopped well before 635. My Dad worked on Inwood Road and there was nothing up there but his office.

I worked at Belt Line and the Tollway in the 80's and watched them build the Tollway from my office on the 6th floor.

OMG...I haven't thought of the Basement, Club A, or Monopoly's in so long!! That makes me laugh! We also went to Borrowed Money.

I still miss Pipe Organ Pizza, Penny Whistle Park, Next Door (you ordered from your booth on a phone and they brought you food with plastic animals on it that we used to collect), Mama's Pizza, Godfather's Pizza, The Chimney, LaSalle's river boat ride at Six Flags, and Sandy Lake Park.

Sandy Lake Park is still alive and kicking. They are on their 3rd generation or so of the family that owns it. They are between I35 and 161 on Sandy Lake. It is another world when you go in there.

Still there........ I remember when this ride first opened 30 years or so ago...... it was state of the art....... lines were a mile long......... now, it's a pretty weak roller coaster by comparison and you can usually get right on with a short wait.........

A newer version of the sign is there, I believe, but the art-deco glory of the bottling plant itself is but a memory. A crying shame, really.

This reminds of a new twist on this topic: cool Dallas/Fort Worth signs. There's a great poster that I've seen in Fort Worth that's a collage of all the landmark signs in the area.

My favorites in Dallas from 30+ years of living there:

- The Rogers Lights sign on Central, down near McCommas, I believe ... It's round, flashes different patterns, and now advertises a piano store. (The substituted "Pianos" for "Rogers"
- The waterfall billboard near downtown on 35 (near Baby Does) -- I was transfixed by that as a kid.
- The Circle Inn sign on NW Hwy ... RIP.

note about the International Wildlife Park... the trails are still there. Look at a Google Map of the area, and you can still see a few containers out there as well as many of the grown over roads. We used to go off-roading out there in High School!

Most of those roads are no impassable due to brush growth, tree falls, you can still get to a few, but the central portion of the site is walk-in only. They are drilling natural gas out there now, so vehicular trespassing is liable to get a shotgun shoved in your face.

The sign was salvaged when the building was demolished, but I never heard where its final destination was. I used to drive by there on the way to work during its last few years, I always imagined it's interior to be akin to a crock pot full of AIDS.
