What a marvelous thread! I'm glad someone brought it back to the top. I've loved reading from the beginning and looking at all the old pictures. I recognize many of the names and families mentioned. I currently work on the Riverside campus and hope to have time to make it back to main campus to Cushing Library to see some pictures. Does the HOPE project still exist that was mentioned?

LWink2 and fossil_ag should team up and give a program for TexAgers. I would love to see the photos in person and listen to the history and stories behind them. Bet LWink2 could even arrange a free room at a historic CS location.

This is the old Municipal Building in downtown Bryan. Does anyone remember it? It is still there.

Isn't this the old Police station what is now the Children's Museum?

Wings over Aggieland and Bryan and Hearne ...

Below is a copy of a bit of local history that I posted on another Forum almost a year ago. Since it was such a big local event at the time, almost 100 years ago, I think it fits well in this thread.

quote:
At 1:37 p.m., December 1, 1911, Pilot Robert G. Fowler eased his Wright Flyer aeroplane down for a landing on the turf of Kyle Field on the campus of the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas.

That landing inaugurated a love of aircraft and flight at Texas A&M College and inspired the college to the forefront in developing technology in those early days of flying machines.

This link will introduce you to the early days of flight at Texas A&M, a bit of history the vast majority of you probably did not know existed.

This article by David Chapman, TAMU Archivist, deserves no paraphrasing from me, or amplification. I would suggest that you left click on each picture in the article to get an enlargement, plus direction arrows for additional pictures.

Great thread! I remember when the Pavilion had dirt floors, and taking swimming lessons from Andy Anderson in the indoor pool.

My first real sense of losing a piece of history happened when the white frame President's Home by Sbisa burned down. (I was very young.)

Also, my mom happened to be on campus when they tore down Guion Hall. She picked up an ornamental cornice-type thing that I now keep in my office.

Tommy...I am pretty sure the old municipal building is now the children's museum in Downtown Bryan. I could be wrong though.

Did the association use to send out those pictures to all century club members? I acquired one from the late 70's that has the same inscription. I would much rather get that every year than the silly plaque.

For all you race fans:

Here is an overhead view of where it was. You can still see the outline of the track.

A Hot Rod Hill may have been located off of Hwy 21 west in 1953 but for the past 20 someodd years Hot Rod Hill has been located on Marino Road, about two miles east of the Truck Stop located at Hwy 21 east and the East Bypass.

Sight-seeing down Military Walk on the A&M College campus in the 1930s in a 1930s vintage aeroplane --- an old Stearman to be exact.
