I saw City of College Station take down and remove a Flock camera today.

Don't know if it was broken, but it wasn't replaced.

People complained here and the company listened - why is there a contract to keep them up? What is being done with the data? Why is flock making a big deal of keeping them up?

I think we have to assume that they have big longterm plans for it and see it as extremely valuable. The rates that they're charging municipalities just doesn't make sense otherwise. In flocks eyes, we are ultimately the product.

I agree and that is surveillance. It has been said before not by me but in this or other threads that I bet if someone put a camera outside of city hall and one on each of the streets the city council and police lives on they wouldn't like it. They would promise to erase it every 30 days.

This recent discussion got me to thinking about who are the owners of Flock. Don't recall it being discussed in previous threads, but it concerned me enough to check with the good ol' AI.

It is a privately help company, not public traded, so very limited ownership data is available. The CEO and founder, Garrett Langley, seems to have started the company with good intentions after his neighborhood had some criminal activity 2017. However, since then, it has become an $8B valued company following a $1B funding by investors. Who are those investors? If they are going to own all this private data, should it not be public who are these "other" owners?

I mentioned in another thread that I'd post my thoughts on Flock here, and I want to stay true to that. This won't satisfy everyone, but it's a clear statement of where I stand.

I don't particularly take issue with the tool itself. I simply do not trust Flock the company. Too many mistakes, too many vulnerabilities, too many mishandled situations. If a more secure company existed that did not store the data and offered true end to end encryption, I would be vocal as hell advocating for a switch. At this point, that company does not exist.

The cameras themselves have documented successful uses right here in College Station and show how the technology can be applied responsibly. I've heard directly from the officers who've used them and how the tools helped their cases. That said, I know not every department operates to our standards. I've read the accounts of misuse and people taking advantage of the system elsewhere. The possibility that someone could hack into the Flock system and build a profile on me because they disliked a vote or something I said at council does cross my mind.

I've done a solid amount of homework on this, not as much as some in this thread, but enough. To my knowledge and based on the conversations I've had, these cameras do not violate the Fourth Amendment. There have been roughly a dozen court cases, and as of today the legal precedent holds that they are not in violation. Again, this is about the tool, not the company.

If citizens put this on an upcoming ballot, I would 100% support that. It's your tax dollars. We live in a democracy. I will always back people expressing their voice and their choice.

Several people on the Hill are working to ban or outlaw these cameras, largely because of distrust of Flock. If any legislation passes, we would adhere to it fully.

I truly do not trust Flock. I believe they lied to and deceived council. But I 100% trust and support our law enforcement, and I know that if there is misuse, our DA is ready to prosecute.

When the contract expires and it's time to renew, I want to grill the Flock team hard and push for stronger protections for our citizens.

This is the same DA that refused to prosecute the corrupt tabc agent at Northgate a while back. I wouldn't be so sure.

I noticed today that the Flock cameras around town are showing up in the Waze app.

The flock camera that had been located on rock prairie road just east (or south) of Fitch toward lick creek park was gone Saturday morning.

I thought Parsons refused to go forward with the case or influenced the grand jury somehow?

The defense attorney for the bar employee that was accused was pretty critical of Parsons if I remember correctly.

Grand juries do what the DA ask them to, 99.9% of time in Texas. That was a dog and pony show so people could wash their hands.

History has shown, the system usually protects itself. Expecting anything different when it comes to flock, would be naive.

I give you my word that if as a councilman a vote was taken for this to go on the ballot that I'd be a ya vote. I still believe it's a helpful tool to law enforcement and I want them to have all the tools the need to do their job well. However, it is your tax dollars paying for it therefore if the citizens want a vote they deserve to have a vote.

This guy is allowed to speak out and the town council and police used flock to harass him so he became more knowledgeable on the system. Police tracked him where ever he went - even cross country for no reason. No real records kept.

Another person pulled over because of bureaucratic screwup - who police's the mistakes - is the city ready for lawsuits regarding flock or do the police just get away with this continually under qualified immunity- information that wasn't checked correctly from another town - why is there no compensation from the city for the mistake? Police made the mistake and detained these people for no reason - luckily they weren't hotheads or they would've been shot.

Flock is going to get an innocent person killed soon.

That's really where the problem is. Flock is just foot in the door. If they can succeed in making people complacent to it, the surveillance state will easily become more extreme. Unfortunately our leaders are either too short sighted to see it, or just don't care.
