I saw one while k was in the front yard walking our oldest dog. I take one step forward for a closer look, then feel a burning pain in my left foot, look down, and see a bit of copperhead in the grass by my foot, jumped back, and see the red spots from the fangs. Never had a clue there was a second snake until it had bitten me.

It took a bit to really start hurting and the swelling was slow and steady. It feels like a dull ache combined with a wasp sting, plus you can feel the swelling. It's not nearly as bad as I would have guessed it would be paa as in wise but definitely unpleasant. If I don't move it feels like a dull ache with a bit of burning sensation. Just weird.

Did you step on it?

We should have had a pot going on when this was going to happen.

This was my thought. It was only a matter of time with all the snakes he has out there. Hell, I'm surprised it took this long.

And get well soon, Mouth. Hopefully this goes smoothly and they get you taken care of.

A wise man said that you don't have to worry about the snake that you see. It's the one you don't see that gets you.

I hope you get better soon.

My father would say that hospitals are the worst place to get any sleep.

I strongly agree with that. Hospitals suck at getting some sleep.

Hospitals are the worst place for anything. They don't seem to solve problems any longer. Just give you a pill.

Sorry that happened to you. Bites look pretty good in that image, but I imagine it is gonna swell something fierce before the day is up. Glad they didn't just dose you with Crofab (antivenin) all willy nilly. Sounds like you've got some docs that are trying to do the right thing.

Hope you heal quickly, how many copperheads you have I thought you were a snake whisperer not getting tagged for this long

McCoy is magic like that.

It's more swollen now, especially since I am not thd type to stay off my feet, and I dug out my crutches and have been doing stuff all day. If I keep it elevated and rest, much of the swelling goes away over time and it is almost painless.

And back off my feet. Was told to seriously relax and elevate and rest or the remaining venom will keep the swelling going. So here I am in bed bored and mellowed out by some hydrocodone

About 42 hours in. The swelling has stabilized. It's followed my veins and lymbic system up the outside and back side of my left leg, sort of on the surface. The inside of my leg from man over my ankle up is almost unaffected. It's stopped about halfway up the side and back of my thigh.

The lower leg and foot gets pretty stiffly swollen if I stand and crutch around and gets better if I lay back and keep the leg elevated. It's sore likes bruise to the touch but doesn't hurt at all if I keep it pretty still.

One strange thing is if I lay down a while, then stand up, it does throb and ache as the blood and fluid flows back down into it at higher pressure. There is a lot of healing left to go. The foot itself around the bite has a bit of blue and purple tinge to it from bruising.

Not terrible but I've got some suffering left to do And then some recovery to get my foot and leg back up to normal function.

Apparently I am in a somewhat exclusive club of -7500 people in the USA that get bitten by a venomous snake. About 50% of those are copperhead bites.

So did you ever get the anti venom? Seems like they are just letting it work its way out of the system…. slowly.

They only use it in about 30-35% of copperhead bites to more vunnerable bit victims or those with complications, bad bite locations, etc. it can have side effects and is extremely expensive as well. Most people don't need it and can tolerate the venom effects and recover fully without it. I didn't get any myself, just a couple of morphine doses while I was under observation

My low resting heart rate and naturally abnormal ECG signal kept setting off the monitor all night, which was the only really annoying thing. Apparently copperhead bites are very common in this general area. The ER in Caldwell TX I went to gets about 20 a year more or less.

Funny timing. We have a place at lake Cisco which is about 30 miles east of Abilene. My daughter was coming down to our dock at around 9pm when she spotted a snake crossing the sidewalk.

My wife yells down at me saying she thinks it's a copperhead. I told her it wasn't since we're so far west and I haven't seen one since I've been out here. Sure enough it was a copperhead and I was barefoot watching it slither away through the yard. Didn't think twice about there being a second one. Now I will.

I am still wondering if you stepped on it or just got too close?

Should have done the wink emoji. Was suggesting the often recommended strategy for the oft posted … "dvm, my dog got hit by a snake". Really just trying to keep Mouth talking. Mouth, if you see a tunnel, don't run to the light.

It was dark and I had a headlamp on. I saw the first snake and was focused on keeping an eye on it and keeping myself between it and the dog when I stepped forward and felt the pain. As it registered and I realized the only possibly thing it could be I was already stepping back and looked down and just saw a bit of copperhead in the grass where my foot had been. Most likely I did step on it. It wasn't that big, maybe as big around as my thumb. I didn't have time to look more. I had to get my dog around it and inside and then evaluate the bite.

No Benadryl. I wasn't feeling any allergic reaction and I know it does nothing for the hemotoxic effects. I happened to already be on Claritin due to allergies anyways.

As far as pain goes, it was like a combination of a dull wasp sting that just kept hurting instead of fading out, and a dull ache of a sprain or muscle pull. Uncomfortable but not unbearable. Once I got settled and got it elevated, it wasn't that bad at all. The thing that concerned me was the swelling. I look like I have the lower leg of an obese diabetic.

Now it all feels like a giant bruise, which is probably effectively what it is.

Swelling and pain from contact is decreasing steadily. I can stand and walk carefully now.

FWIW, Mr Frodo, I thought this was a great Outdoors post. Seems everyone else overlooked it or thought you were serious.

The cottonmouths have a very dark, much more faint version of the copperhead pattern of hourglass patterns but often they are so dark you have to get a lot closer than you want to in order to see it.

You can't miss the up tilted "what are you doing there" head, with the black and creme bands on the cheeks.
