I know there are big bulls in the breaks. Guy I work for shot a 360" up there. They also have some really good bighorns. Something about that area accelerates how quickly they can get to B&C.

Any recommendations on outfitters in NM that run drop camps? The outfitter I was planning to apply through appears to be out of business.

Just a reminder that CO draw applications are due by the 4th. Also remember to get the ATV sticker if applicable and the small game license.

Looks like I am going to burn my 6 points in CO for archery elk.

Looking at 501 or 67.... anyone have thoughts on those two units?

67 would be my vote.

What about for cardio? I'm fully aware I'm going to get my ass kicked again (like always at that altitude) but I'm trying to figure what goal in training I should have. I've not had issues with lower body strength during the hunts so far, thank goodness.

What's a good goal you guys have had that you think helps with cardio?

I'm trying to figure out if it's a keep an X pace for 3-5 miles, be able to run 5-6 miles (or more) without stopping, hit the stair climber for X amount of time without stoppingā€¦

Just curious what you guys have done and hoping I can change my approach this time.
Last year for cardio I did a half marathon plan + walking hills with a heavy pack 1-2x for week. Goal for cardio was for a 5-6mile run to feel easy/routine and to get a couple double digit mile runs in. Felt very well prepared fitness wise and had no issues, but we weren't particularly high.

Thanks for the bump and reminder that I need to be doing cardio way more oftenā€¦ good advice too!

I'm actually going to be in CO next week on the same ranch and hopefully that will serve as a big reminder on how much I need to work on cardio.

Just got an email 9n changes to Wyoming hunting due to the winter that will never end. I hope this pastes correctly. I'm on turnaround at work and only use a mobile device currently. I'm happy to forward the email to anyone needing it.

As a result of winter impacts, Wyoming Game and Fish Department wildlife managers have made significant adjustments to hunting season proposals in many areas of the state. The modified set of draft regulations are now available for public viewing and will be presented to the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission on April 18 in Casper.

Initial season proposals were presented during public meetings around the state in March. After considering the ongoing impacts of winter and the overwhelming public concern, wildlife managers modified their recommendations in areas with extreme winter mortality.

Modifications are highlighted in yellow in the draft regulations below.

Looks like minimal changes to elk.

Lots of mule deer units going to 3 points or better.

BIG changes for antelope. Pretty much canceling all doe tags and cutting the other quotas.

They said they will still make changes once they get more data on winter kill. Lots of comments were in favor for bigger tag cuts.

Great info. Anxious to see how the landowner vouchers all fall into play in this. Usually had it figured what I'd be receiving but this might be a different year.

Its not so much me I am worried about. I am supposed to take my stepdad on a 70th birthday mule deer hunt. If he doesnt draw and I do not get landowner tags, then I feel like I failed him. But I know this is out of my control. In addition to that, I am helping about a dozen Ags off the OB planning their trips so it certainly changes things for them as well. I will be happy with a cow or doe hunt just for food for me. I want others to succeed but I also want to protect the resources.

I drew my dream NM Gila 2nd season archery tag. I already have 100 onx pins marked from buddies that have hunted in it the past and a pretty good game plan. I'm a DIY guy, but know this is my best shot at possibly getting my dream Bull and a guide would probably increase those odds.

Does anyone have any guides they'd recommend for the Gila? My main concern is the calling solo aspect. I do not need a lodge or anything fancy. At this point I'm going solo and truck camping. I plan on hunting the whole season if needed. Thanks for any leads or tips.

Welp... pulled my 3rd choice for Wyoming Elk - 49-4. Now if I can just remember why I picked it? I remember my 1st and 2nd choices well, but not this one for some reason. Looks like it's not great, but either way I'll still be happy to be outdoors.

Nephew didn't draw general WY elk with 4 points.

3 more of us had no luck in the random draw.

From what it looks like it took about 4.5 point in the regular draw and 4 in the special for general. Crazy

Good News: Received daughters 6X6 euro mount today from Montana.

Bad News: Figuring out how to mount it on one of her walls. Certainly its going to be a bunch of work.
Both of us Unsuccessful in Wyoming.
My rotator cuff surgery has failed and now my left shoulder is now torn.

Will pick up the bow again in a week for the first time in 6 months and figure out if I will be able to manage an archery hunt in Montana September or have to switch it to rifle where I am already scheduled to go as a spectator spotter with my daughter.

Headed back to the desert of Utah again this year to chase muleys! Can't wait! Will be looking for last years buck's brother.

Is that where you shot your big muley last year? I think I remember reading two separate threads with you chasing them last season but not sure.

How's everyone doing in preparation for their western hunts this season? I did some running around at the deer lease this weekend spot and stalling pigs and was okay. Also did a little bit of hiking and that went well. I have been slacking on my cardio but I'm not too worried about it right now.

Yes, it is. Should have just been one thread. This oneā€¦

https://texags.com/forums/34/topics/3333947/1#discussion

I haven't done any preparation. That being said, I've never really prepared much for any of my hunts. Just grind it out.
