Or my wild imagination, he wanted to get away from everything, bought burner phone and fake ID up front, stored up cash, and paid someone to stage the scene.

May not be that wild. My buddy knew a guy in the Marines who scheduled a hiking trip and was supposed to meet a friend whatever airport. He never showed. They spent months looking for him, posting all over social media and more. Their PI finally figured out that he had flown to Paris and joined the Foreign Legion. Guy didn't want anything more to do with his parents, wife, or toddler.
I'm imagining this dude sitting on his balcony in Marseille right now. Maybe his 26 y/o french gf, just brought him a cup of coffee and a spliff. He might be going surfing later today ... who knows. Godspeed to this dude.

I think everyone has had or will have a similar fantasy. As for the parents and wife, whatever, they'll get over it and we have no idea what their relationship was actually like. It's the leaving your toddler that loses all of the respect from me.

Oh geeze I never knew about this. The rapist part makes it all the more crazy but also more understandable as to why he's have.

Wait...It's day 16 and they haven't gotten into his phone yet?

That seems odd as I thought that could be done in a matter of a couple days.

Thanks for the update. Certainly praying for this family.

Hopefully they can get the phone/text records to open or close some leads.

Not necessarily. I think the FBI has the ability to access a locked iPhone, depending on model. I don't think state/local LE has that capability.

Is Luling PD/Caldwell Co handling? Andy and Barney.

Yep, look through phone records, emails, credit card transactions prior. And like above poster said, any camera footage from the route he took.

That's right. From what I understand, Caldwell County originally handled with Luling PD in supplemental support.

Maybe he doesn't want to be found? It is either that or foul play. has to be.

A wrecked car seems like it lowers the odds of the not wanting to be found idea.

Maybe he wrecked the car and was walking down the side of the road to get help. Gets hit by a drunk / texting driver. Whoever hit him freaked out and moved the body somewhere else.

Basically the 'I know what you did last summer' scenario.

Maybe but I know I'd sure take my cell phone with me if I were walking to get help.

Yeah I remember around 2001 or so a student that was home for Christmas went and left a note for his parents saying you'll never hear from me again or something to that effect. Rode his bike to a bus stop. And vanished. Just wanted to get away and didn't want to be found. Used to be a website for him but have forgotten it since then. Went to Mexico or something. Wasn't a bad guy and didn't have any problems I didn't think. Just gone. No explanation.

I agree. He was taken someplace else and buried. May never be found.

Please remember that the missing person's cousin started this thread seeking help.
He did not ask for wild ass speculations or theories.
I realize it is human nature to do this (especially on anonymous web forums), but please be mindful that the OP's family is grieving & they are likely reading this. Ask yourself before you post if it is helpful or uplifting... or how you would feel if it was your cousin.

Seriously! I know it's the internet age, but have some situational awareness, people.

It was a gravel road, right?

I can see sliding off the road at high speed and spinning into an embankment or fence at doing that kind of damage (RIP Billy Conforto).

I'm thinking if he was driving the car some coyotes / hogs got him.

Correct, It was a gravel road, he went into an older barbed wire fence after leaving the road at an angle through the ditch which is more of a grassy shoulder. It looked to of made contact with a couple of smaller mesquite trees along the fence line as well. This is what I gathered from looking at the scene, not the car. Judging by the depth the car traveled into the place he was not going super fast, or I'm taking for granted how hard mesquite is.

Caldwell County has taken over the investigation now, the first week it was being coordinated by state troopers. Caldwell Co did travel to Houston to retrieve evidence like the phone. it's been reported it's locked in such a way it'll have to be sent off, and then they'll only be get data saved to the cloud(s) of whatever apps etc he used, but not any actual content from the phone, if I understood it correctly. I'm not sure if that means they'll be able to get texts or not.

Was news to me. I thought it was still rare/difficult/expensive to crack. Guess I was wrong.

I'm assuming they meant going to the DPS where I assume most of the evidence went

or to the family? Does a person's affects remain with the police when foul play hasn't been determined?

The runaway scenario with the wrecked car on a backroad late at night is literally the lynchpin of a John Grisham novel. The Partner.

Reporter Marin Austin (of Fox 7 - Austin) reported Texas Department of Public Services (DPS) reported narcotics found 100 feet from the JL's wrecked vehicle on 12/13/20 (image of a police report in the background).

Marin also reported the keys were in the ignition, and the car doors locked.

It was not clear if she was reading from the police report image but I assume she was and/or obtained the info from the same report.

This is similar to a case in Canadian . We just listened to the podcast yesterday - it's well done by Skip Hollandsworth/Texas Monthly. Tom Brown, a senior in high school just disappeared.

"In 2016, a popular teenager disappeared in the tiny Panhandle community of Canadian, Texas. Two years later, his remains were discovered beneath a tree outside of town. But to this day, no arrests have been made, and nearly everyone involved in the case has fallen under suspicion."

Not just narcotics, but his wallet was in the bag too. That's a critical piece, as it ties the bag to him.

Drug deal or robbery gone bad sounds like, now if he still on the run? Or disappeared.

Why would the backpack be left on the ground if there was a drug deal? And what were the narcotics?

College kids drive late at night. Nothing too odd there.
