Sounds like to me you are trying to sell it to your inner self. Just give in and buy it. It sure won't go down in value.

So, looking for a small .22LR for my daughter to start training on, and maybe carry. (Yes, I know a .22 is not a carry, etc...) Thinking of going to gun show to avoid the shipping and FFL fees.

She was/maybe is still "afraid" of guns, but it was most recently her that came to me. Would most large gun shows have a decent assortment? Would they generally be cheaper? I'm not looking to break the bank- quite the opposite. But I don't want junk.

Do you think/would you recommend used .22? Any particular models new or used? The one I'm favoring if bought new is a Bersa Thunder. I prefer alloy fram and that she learn a hammer fired even though I know a striker would be easier. But I'm open.

Any ideas or suggestions is appreciated. Thanks1

p.s talking semi-auto, though I know a lot to be said for revolvers

You do know that you would still have to fill out an FFL at a gun show correct?

I go to a lot of them and do not really see much of a difference in prices.

I would normally not suggest a revolver, but because of the fickle nature of shooting rimfire out of a pistol, you may consider something like a Ruger LCR in .22lr or the much better .22 mag.

Edit- I think you added the bottom part after I hit reply.

Not sure about a Bersa. If it was me I would probably buy a Walther PPK.

thanks. yeah, I understand if they hold a FFL, they do the check, which is fine. I just think they don't charge a fee, or it would be minimal. I think if it is a private seller who doesnt hold an FFL, then no check. But maybe not many of those at a big show.

Reason for Bersa is value. I think a whole lot of the extra price for Walther is just the .007 mystique. Bersa reliability is widely proclaimed, so I would feel okay going the cheaper route. And the semi-auto route is just so she gets introduced to those and we get to experience that together. When I think of her alone and needing something, a small revolver would be nice- less complications. Appreciate the input.

Thanks. And Alaska had me looking at Ruger- the LCPII sounds nice. Maybe something like that would be better (simpler) to start. I just wasnt wanting polymer, but with a .22 recoil shouldn't be an issue. If anyone is familiar with this one, please weigh in.

Do not go with a bersa thunder in .22.

You should be able to find a good deal on a Ruger Mk4 at any gun show new or used, and maybe even an older Mk3 or earlier. Heck, academy sells them for well under $400.

Get a dedicated 22. Learn to shoot on it. Worry about a carry gun later.

Would pass on an LCP or LCR in 22 as well since that got posted. Don't buy a small 22. Get a dedicated, regular sized 22 pistol if its a first handgun someone is going to learn how to shoot on and use. Trust me on this.

S&W has a pretty nice 22 semiauto pistol.

Great starter gun for transition to a Shield or M&P9c.

Also hella fun at a steels match.

Amen and amen.

I am willing to debate the merits of 22 mag snub nose for defense but not for introducing someone who is potentially scared of gun to shooting. Even without recoil the da trigger pull and the muzzle blast will be discouraging.

The Ruger standard, mk2, 3 or 4 are great options as suggested. Smith Victory or Browning Buckmark would be fine as well.

If you want to spend a bit more but have a firearm that will increase in value take a look at a Smith & Wesson Model 41 as below.
They are arguably one of the finest, smoothest and accurate shooting .22 semi autos ever made.
S&W quit making them but there are plenty around at reasonable prices.
Absolutely a joy to shoot and have various interchangeable barrels for different lengths.

Thanks to all above- . Yeah, maybe I'll go with a larger .22- the real goal is just to get her comfortable with shooting, anyway. lots to think about!

I would agree w/Bender in that a larger .22lr makes more sense. I would highly recommend you investigate the fairly new Smith&Wesson 22x. These handle very nicely as it sits low in the hand, and its grip size will fit the great majority of people. They are optics and suppressor ready, and they come with two mags that do not seem picky about how they are loaded. Our example functions extremely well, and we find ourselves shooting it more than any other .22lr pistol in our extensive collection.

Another useful thing about these is that they share the same magazine with the FPC rifle. We also have the FPC too, and in fact it turned out to be such a nice little shooter that I went out and purchased the pistol. The combo makes for a fun range day for two people.

$1000 or trade. Interested in thermal scopes / night optics, rimfire rifles for trade.

Fox Trot Mike .45 Pistol.
7" Barrel.
PDW Brace.
Sig Sauer Romer Red Dot + Vortex 3x Magnifier.
Ambi Safety
3x Glock Mags (including extender)
Tri Lug Suppressor adapter

Built out the lower but the upper was bought assembled from the factory. Had some issues feeding before sending back to FM (great customer service btw) and they replaced the bolt with an updated one. All good since then with a few hundred rounds through it without an issue. Just thinning the herd of black guns / safe queens.

ETA: I'd separate the optics for a sale. Can always use those later.
