It takes a good part of your life to acquire things, so the thief is taking that portion of your life. And a person who has no qualms about taking what belongs to others, today, will likely have no qualms about hurting someone to get those things, tomorrow.
At least you know the money he got for pawning that mower will be going towards new ink and not meth,
