I've been murdering the antelope meat also. I think I'm going to try and kill a couple next fall. Cause they ain't so big.

I'm in the same boat. Trying to figure out how to get as many CO tags as I can. Doe meat hunts are totally OK (I'll be buck hunting in NM). Anyone got recs on units to focus? Or just try to hit up the leftovers?

I took some of my buddies antelope as payment for helping butcher and pack it. And man is it good. Antelope jerky turned out great.

COJ, I'm not sure either. The unit I hunted this year, typically has doe tags go to leftover but wouldn't say its great hunting due to lack of public land. Trying to get private access tho..

You muzzle loader hunt tho right? I have friends thag claim muzzy antelope is the way to go. Less people and better odds I think. I've debating on getting a muzzy just to do that hunt the way they talk about it.

Yeah, I've got a ML. I love hunting with that thing (except that it is heavy). Thanks for the tip! That would be a blast, chasing those suckers witb a smoke pole.

Had a meeting get canceled, and after 15 min of research looks like a muzzy antelope hunt is every do able in some decent areas.... Namely the Comanche natl grasslands, Pawnee ntl grasslands, and a spot I've wanted to go check out near kremmling. From experience the NW corner has tons of antelope, but even a doe will cost a point.

This is giving me a reason to look into muzzle loaders now...only downside is it shorts the last week of archery elk next yeae

Well- lets get on it! I MIGHT have access to a ranch to chase does around. Was invited this year to acquire a leftover tag and go get em (the rancher doesn't like the 'lopes)- but I couldn't go because of elk. I will have to ask if he still hates them next year or not... ha ha. Maybe one of us will chase down a decent lead. Even better if we can find some public land options. Time to fire up the google-machine

I can give you my experience with a great ML of you are ever interested. I just went though that whole process a couple years back. And a few tips could have shortened my learning curve a season or two.

I'm in! OB muzzy antelope trip it is!

I'll post a thread about muzzy's to keep it separate. Definitely interested in your input. Never shot one before and have no idea about any of it. Just think it's something I should get into for different hunting opportunities.

I'm going to pick up a muzzleloader if I ever draw one of those New Mexico elk tags! I agree, use all the weapon choices and hunt more.

Haha...I know, I know.

I think I do pretty well with hunting trips, so I can't really complain. I have 2 kids (7 and 3) and my wife works. I still managed a week-long trip to CO in October and I'm going to AZ for a week in January, along with whitetail hunting here in TX on some weekends.

I try to make the January trip to AZ an annual thing, and then add one more trip each fall with my brother and/or dad. Now if the fall trip falls through next year, I might be getting back in touch with you fellas...

Yep. I can't complain, but I still do occasionally. Working wife, kids 6 and 3. I go out west once in September or October and then hunt whitetails as much as I can in Kansas the rest of the year. I'm working on a plan to get two western trips a year...

My wife is in hell... where I sent her. She could make good biscuits, but her behavior was terrible.

NM First rifle season. Lincoln NF on the two larger deer and BLM (desert) on the two smaller. Out of eight hunters we came home with these four.

First time to post photos, hope it works

Hell yeah man. Congrats.

That's a fun unit. I love me some New Mexico desert BLM.

Are you familiar with Dark Canyon Rd?

NM desert hunt a few years ago. Spotted this one at 1000 yards second morning with 12 does. Closed the distance to where they were and he had disappeared out of the group, bedded. Came up to that drawn in the afternoon and set down to glass the draw. I had just got situated grabbing for my binoculars and out of the corner of my eye he is feeding 30 yards to my right. Had to swing around to get the shot with no cover as you can see in the photo. I saw him first! I had just got a new rifle/scope set up for longer range and end up with a 30 yard shot, but I will take it any day. Some awesome scenery out there, but hunting in 85 degree weather really sucks.

Yes Dark Canyon is near the southern Lincoln NF, it is great for quail hunting. We also hunt in the northern part of the Lincoln NF a few units up. The best deer and quail are in unit 31, it is just the flattest and a little less exciting to hunt to me.

What's the story on the profile pic buck?

My profile pic buck was from San Juan NF south of Durango around twelve years ago. After five days of seeing just 'tree' deer, it took me around five looks at him without binoculars at around 300 yards before I decided it might actually be a deer as I was moving locations in the Polaris. All I could see was the neck and head out of the thick shin oak brush, so he got it in the neck. When I finally got to him the only way I found him was he was not dead and kicking, it was so thick I could barely bust through it. Me best buck so far 178".

Any luck in 33 or 30?

Hey AgEng06,

In your DIY OTC Colorado hunt, in the first picture did you kill the first bull there? We pulled this 6x6 bull out of the next draw to the left (north) around seven years ago. You used to could drive all the way back there. We got word from several different hunters that the land owner at the end of the road was petitioning the DOW to shut down the road and it has been shut down for some time now to anything motorized. I heard there was a warden sitting at the gate most of the third season this year. That was some hike back there, did you stay on the road the whole way or go up over the mountain? For your campsite, we have camped there as well. If you every go the third season there is always a large Texas camp there, if you stop by make sure to bring plenty of whiskey. Also ran across this print out on a point, I have a 12" boot and it was an inch longer. I had to step in the same exact spot to get around a tree at the end of a point. Why anyone would have their shoes off doing that is weird. My father and his buddy have been hunting in that area almost 50 years.
