Was in a group that had an accidentally doe kill (bedded doe sprang up after arrow launched, hunter sliced the jugular vein). Warden was called in and assessed a small fine and allowed others in the party to buy the carcas (just not the hunter). Tag was left with the hunter and everybody moved forward again.

Thanks guys...I beat myself up pretty good over it. I would be lying if I said I did not have thoughts several times about turning that truck around. There were cows 75yds behind him, he just came up first and in my mind I thought I was shooting the first legal thing I could.

I am assuming the meat goes to hungry families. He said there was a list he keeps of people to give the meat to and that it would definitely be going to good use. He said that he could add me to the list if I wanted, but didn't feel right. I can afford to buy it from the store, I just choose to hunt it instead.

And Joe is right on the 4pts or 5" brow tines. To confuse it slightly more you are allowed a spike less than 5" and it is considered a cow, but assume that is mainly to add leniency while hunting in brush or at distance.

We are getting some good rains in the mountains of Pagosa. Just took a drive, and both fires seem to be getting drenched. White smoke today- not billowing.

But- lots more lightning with the storm. Always a catch.

Camping east of Cloudcroft with the family this weekend. Heard bugles last night before a storm rolled through.

Well, I'm a virgin to elk hunting, so I think they were actual bugles and not a hunter. Heard a few cow calls this morning that seemed more "human".

Hiked a little but haven't seen more than a squirrel and two turkeys.

I freaking love the mountains. My momma always said it was because you could see 'em from the hospital room window where I was born.

Fellas. I don't leave for Colorado for another week and I've been living vicariously through all of you that are already out on the mountain. Texags going down today was a serious bummer. Stressed me out.

What if Shaynew1 finally got around to telling us a story and he couldn't post it and we missed our chance?

What if LEJ finally emerged briefly into civilization to tell the first part of his epic tale?

Did cupofjoe find a mule deer or he is actually just camped out on that giant bull counting down the days?

Is stdeb11 back in the mix chasing down more elk?

What about Harge?

Did sean98 try to make his triumphant return to the OB but couldn't get on so he changed his mind and swore us off for good?

With that new information, I decided I would self report the violation and take my lumps. I made the drive back to camp, loaded up the cooler and head, and drove him the 1.5hrs to the CPW office. That was a long drive. The game warden was a great guy. I told him what happened (I'm an idiot and no excuse) and he was very understanding. Sadly, he had to take the elk, but he did reissue my license since I came and self reported. Now I've got the rest of the season to actually get one to my the freezer. Lesson learned and won't ever make that mistake again..

TLDR; read and understand all hunting regulations for the unit you hunt. CO game wardens are good people. Self reporting game violations, while painful, isn't the end of the world. I'm dumb, don't be like me.

Props to you for doing the right thing. That said, you dealt with the coolest Colorado warden I have ever heard of. I've never even heard of a self reported violation getting off without some kind of ticket, let alone getting their tag back. He/she knew you were trying to do it right.

Worked all morning and missed him at 77. It was hilariously low and I think I mis ranged him.

So I sold out and busted him at 110~.
