I've seen almost as many bears while elk hunting as i have elk. I bet you get one. If you get a deer or elk you'll get a bear for sure, one will be on the carcass within 24 hours
I bet You can help the boy out with a few suggestions!
Great job securing a bear tag. Make sure you think through where to aim on a bear shot (think standing bear!). Better to think these things through before you experience in the field!

Really haven't seen or heard of many bears this year, it's an odd year. To be honest though, I don't pay much attention to bears that aren't in my neighborhood. Most of what I have seen has been back in the woods, and near a water hole. Did see a small one tearing up some choke cherries last weekend, though. But if he has a carcass, he'll have a bear.
Can ya'll elaborate on this about writing the HIP# on your license? I'm not seeing a specific spot to do this. This is my first run at Colorado elk...LEJ said:

Broadheads are on out to 70.
I'm like 90% sure it is only required if you have a small game license and plan to hunt them. And there should be a spot right above where you sign it. Near the bottom of the license where it has the receipt part.
It specifically states- you do NOT need a HIP if you are not hunting small game during this year.

Week before last I was experiencing unsatisfactory broadheads grouping.
So I spent a few hours at the shop.
I don't know what's changed w my bow in the last 8 months, but we could not get it to tune with any combo of a bunch of different arrows I brought.
Even shot a few of the staffs arrows to no avail.
Finally we took a guess and built one that tuned right up. Bullet holes at 5 ft, 10yds, and 20 yds.
Hex 340 w 75 grain insert and 125 point. 468...super light by the last three years comparisons.
But other than how light they may be, I really believe in them and they are flying and grouping gorgeously.
I believe in em!

If you look at the charts you're on the line between 300/350...apparently your bow likes 340's.shaynew1 said:

Still a relatively heavy arrow overall all things considered.

We have definitively determined it likes 340s.
Didn't like 300s with any amount of weight on the front.
I mean it was close, but not perfect. I shot through a pallet of paper from every nock position with multiple point weights.

And that is what matters the most, I believe. Those arrows will go exactly where you want, because you've done the homework, put in the time, and have unshakable confidence in them!

For what it's worth I'm still shooting FMJ 400s. The chart reads like I should lean to a 340 but 400s tune up nice for me. After the last round of setup with the shop a few weeks ago the bow is shooting sweeter than I ever remember.
I'm now 100% confident in all my pins. Set a slider tape tomorrow just as gravy on top but won't use it hunting. Took my time on really dialing each pin. Thanks again for the sight.

Got it. Thanks for the heads up.
Sorry for the HIP confusion. I was confused too. The HIP space showed up on my bear tag which also had my small game license on it.
Tying up loose ends in town. Bout to head back to mtns. Packing in tomorrow.

Just got back from Idaho and did a quick scouting trip for archery elk. A couple of units I looked around in were really smokey. Planning on hunting Idaho around the 10th -24 of September but the smoke has me second guessing that plan. Anyone have a good map (website) that shows current smokey areas?
OnX hunt app shows fire data (live and historical).
Time to put the women and children to bed and go lookin for dinner.
32 lbs of pack and bino rig + ~ 6 lbs archery gear + a few other doodads should put me around 40lbs. Gonna try to stick it out from tomorrow afternoon til Labor Day weekend, then regroup at a buddy's place in town and go at it again.

Blue Star for The Program reference.
Have a bear tag for units 21, 22, 30, 31, and 32. Just picked up a turkey tag on a whim since I've never hunted them. Supposed to be good numbers on the Grand Mesa which isn't too far. Will also head out for Sages and Blues again.
Will buy an OTC bull tag for 22, just can't make up my mind for 2nd or 3rd season.
