One week left for Colorado. Just a reminder.

Question for Colorado. My father wants to buy a few preference points. We are stuck at the Hunter education part. He was born in 1960 so therefore has never gotten a Texas hunter eduction card since he is old enough. However, Colorado says that you have to have some form of education number if born after 1949. There is a test you can take to not have to take an actual class but it's $25 and you have to make a 90 on it to pass. Colorado says they honor other state education, so I always use my Texas education number on it when I apply. Since he is exempt in Texas, can he be exempt in Colorado? If not, what if he doesn't pass the test? Does he really have to drive to Colorado to take an actual course just to apply?

Edit: turns out he actually did take a Texas course back in the late 80s. Saves some headache for sure.

Good that you found a card. I was going to suggest doing a search on the TX site to make sure.

As far as I know- a Texas exemption does not apply to Colorado. You must be qualified by CO standards. One state will usually only honor another state's policy if they meet or superceed their own policy.

If he has a Texas Hunter ed card, it will work in Colorado. He has to carry it with him while hunting.

Or you can go to a CPW office and they can enter your TX hunter ed in to your profile permanently so you no longer have to carry the actual card with you. I did that this past year, granted I'm now a CO resident. I don't fully understand the in person vs the number thing, but that's how it worked for me. Also had a CO GW tell me this.

This is true. In TX, my hunters ed # always just printed automatically on my license. After moving to CO, I went to buy a turkey tag and small game license, and the clerk wouldn't sell to me because I didn't have a physical card. I pulled up the TXPWD website on my phone, showed him the #, but they still couldn't do it. I had to go home, print off the webpage, and bring a physical "copy" with me.

No more of that BS for me. I went and logged my # in at the local Office. Now it prints with a "V" for "verified" on my license. Hopefully didn't get lost or screwed up with the new system this year.

Finalized my CO application Friday. Points for sheep, goat, and moose. Elk point (will do OTC archery and something off leftover), Deer point (should draw 2nd choice doe tag), and Antelope tag (buck, and hopefully leftover doe).

Getting my dad to put in for an elk point to take him on a muzzle loader hunt in 2019.

I've had mountains on the brain bigtime this last week

I've got about one more ski day left in me, then I'm ready for it to melt and start scouting. Ready to get some cameras up again and mountain miles on the legs

Put in for my Deer, Elk, and Moose points, for a grand total of $19. Sure beats loaning the state of CO nearly $3k interest-free, like I've done the last few years!

I forgot to look at Moose since the system changed. I'm in now! I had previously passed it up because I didn't want to front the ~$2k.

So about when will we know the results for Colorado?

Applied for Colorado, South Dakota, Wyoming and Montana mule deer points and Iowa whitetail point.
Hunting New Mexico private land antelope and Montana & Utah private land mule deer.
Might put in for Nevada mule deer. Have to check dates.

The draw is supposed to happen in early June. Payment deadline if you draw is June 20.
I really don't understand the 2 month lag time between the deadline and draw.

All i have to say is- thank God for turkey season! It is a great distraction while waiting for draw results...

NM was April 12th last year if I remember right. So fingers crossed for tomorrow or Friday.

And yeah I don't understand the long lag time either. Plan to celebrate my birthday tomorrow with a turkey scouting trip before work

Same here. The only consolation is when it gets crappy out there during archery season, I can think back to this time of year and remember to cherish the every second I get to take my bow out hiking

But enough of the philosophy bs. I'm ready to get after it.

Me too. Thankfully it'll be here before we know it. Got this two week old baby that needs to get settled and sleeping by then, and I've got my MIL lined up to come stay a couple weeks while I'm gone.

I've been shooting my bow a bunch and about to build a new set of hunting arrers.

This'll be my first year at the one in San Antonio but i used to shoot the one in Snowbird all the time. Lots of fun courses. Challenging shots.

So far I was hoping to head over and jump in somewhere. Some of my buddies from WY are planning to make a trip down too, they usually shoot all 3 days but I haven't heard for sure what they're planning.

Has anyone shot San Antonio before? Is it going to fill up completely?

Some early phone calls this morning had me in the clear until my dad called to let me know he'd scheduled a chunk of our cattle to deliver the 23-28.

I may have to send a proxy to work...the last day is the most annoying anyway.
