He could probably get dinged for the driving reimbursement. If the travel is truly incidental to his job, it's probably okay. If he starts taking passengers/coworkers, then that's probably a no-no if he is being reimbursed 100%.

Also, hypothetically, if a friend were to fly a plane to a location in order to do work, would the friend need a commercial rating? Mileage is currently being charged to clients for driving.

Here's the legal rundown on this.
https://pilot-protection-services.aopa.org/news/2019/april/01/flight-incidental-to-business

This is exactly what I was trying to find. I thought I had a FAR/AIM available but I did not.

So solo, flying to another city to do work and coming back meets the exception. If there are more than just the PIC, no travel expenses can be charged and still use a PPL.

This is good news; now I need sell a car and get my instrument rating!

From Canyonag77:

Still on forced vacation until this evening. I wanted to pass the word that My Favorite Pilot is safe. An F-16 went down in South Carolina last night, lost the pilot, too. The lost aircraft is from Shaw, and she is not at Shaw. Just let people know that "Canyonag77's Favorite Pilot was not involved in this incident."

New DA50 RG announced last week, lots of features from the DA 62 in a single engine. Definitely interested to see price point once it's announced.

Gonna guess $849k, if we are playing that game.

Beautiful plane with a 300hp diesel. I think Diamond got bought out by the Chinese, didn't they?

South Carolina has an annual event called "Salute to the Shore".

https://www.facebook.com/SalutefromtheShore

Shaw AFB was scheduled to participate, but are on stand down due to the loss of a pilot earlier this week. So My Favorite Pilot's Squadron stepped in, though MFP did not fly this mission.

The lost F-16 pilot was originally enlisted, and was a loadmaster on a C-17 before OCS and UPT. Thus, the formation flight and this great photo, from the back of a -17.

You can read more about the F-16 pilot at the post linked below. Bring Kleenex.

I'll be interested to see how that goes. I have not compared the performance specs, but considering Mooney went out of business, I think they will have a tough time with market share against the bonanza and cessnas.

Mooney isn't technically out of business currently, and likely to be sold again to the next billionaire looking to become a millionaire.

Bonanzas are not relevant in the new sales figures... It is Cirrus and everyone else a distant second unfortunately.

Diamond could have a big winner if they can get it to market at a competitive price point.

Minor update on military ADS-B... I've been commuting weekly to TX for a few months now and notice a lot more mil traffic on my iPad. A few weeks ago i saw a pair of fast movers in an MOA will call signs SATAN01 and SATAN02. They were doing 560+knots in formation while i was going by much slower, outside of the MOA.

I know that bookings need to come back. I've got a fair few friends that are about to be out on the street, with no ability to replace the income they stand to lose.

Are bonanzas sales that low? I'm not educated on this market.

I'd buy a used bonanza over a new citrus.

Yes, unfortunately. It has gotten too heavy (lower performance) and too expensive. Ditto for the Baron. Last i checked, Bo shipments were in the teens and single digits for the Baron, annually.

Buying new only makes sense if you get the bonus depreciation for a business, or have throw away money to spend on toys... I'd take a 70's A36 and fully modernize it with the latest panel, autopilot, paint and interior, and Tornado Alley Turbo system and have a better plane at far less than half the cost of new. It's sad what has happened to the GA market in the last few decades...

Totally agree on the upgraded 80s models.

If I'm going to spend $800k, I'd reach for a twin turbine at $1.2 mil. Hard to beat an A36 with an IFR panel for under $300k.

Heard from my favorite pilot, who was visiting with the local Civil Air Patrol guy. They had been running practice intercepts on the CAP Cessna 172, and CAP pilot came by after to visit.

CAP guy says they are getting a brand new 172 with a full glass cockpit.

$500,000.00

I've seen a lot more military planes with ADS, too.

https://www.adsbexchange.com/

Has a feature where you can filter for military traffic, only.

I wish some billionaire would fall in love with Bellanca and build a few dozen 2020 Super Vikings.

I'm really interested in the full specs on this.

I went from an SR22T to a Citation Mustang for my family of 4. We outgrew the Cirrus and the Mustang was such a better value compared to the TBM. The Mustang operating cost is too high for me to just go fly for the heck of it like I could in the Cirrus.

I always thought Cirrus should produce a retractable single to compete with the Bonanza and hopefully turbocharge and pressurize it. Something that can get a family of 4 or 5 across the Rockies and still operate cheap enough to make hamburger runs.

Anyone with a ground ADS-B receiver, or can access https://www.adsbexchange.com/

The next hour or so might be interesting in Texas. Look for tail numbers 82-8000 and 92-9000.

If you go to ADS-B Exchange, click the "U" toward the top of the map to filter for military traffic only.

EDIT: 92-9000 just went off the map.

I suspect the two planes mentioned are not alone. Military is not required to squawk ADS-B, I don't think.

I imagine tracking those aircraft is virtually impossible. They probably only use military frequencies. I may head out to KMAF and do some plane spotting.

AF1? Nope. It's crossing north of Texarkana right now.

The little friends with it? More likely to be hidden.

I don't think they care. Any aircraft that could be a threat can't get within 100 miles. Any missile system able to reach that high would be hard to get in place, and defeat the countermeasures of both AF1 and its escorts.

Not impossible, but its a risk they pretty much have to take.

And yeah, they use mil frequencies to talk, but those can be intercepted. Radar is national coverage and ADS-B are pretty common and cheaply available. I have an ADS-B that costs less than $100

For CB-17, don't know if you're done at Altus yet. Saw a pair of C-17s in close trail over Canyon yesterday. My guess is they were doing an inflight refueling simulation.

Really cool as they were going in and out of the clouds at sunset.

I'm back home and waiting to PCS

It was probably airdroppers headed to or leaving a low level. C-17s get real plugs off the 46 or 135 pretty much when wanted at Altus
