I was having a hell of a time with Malenia, so I respec'd to a dex/arc build and ran rivers of blood. That absolutely destroyed her. Beat her on my second attempt after the respec.

The whole consecrated snow area and related areas it leads to are pretty brutal. Yikes.
Ordina, Liturgical Town was the least fun part of the entire game. Just felt like it was bull**** simply for bull****s sake.

if you take a look at the walkthrough, it's actually pretty simple to get through it.

I'm on Malenia now. stuck stuck stuck... argh!

I wasn't a huge fan of putting invisible enemies there, who can only be revealed by a special torch. If you didn't get that torch, have fun with those assassins

yeah I guess that's pretty BS but at least you know where they are when they pop.

Following the guide, you don't have to kill any of them. You only need to rush one lamp and die. The others avoid the assassins.

Thank you.
I'm going to try this.
I tried lowering my resolution, no change. Quitting things in the tray, no change.
It's been driving me crazy since starting the game a week and a half ago. Worst is when it happens mid fight.

Finished the game with Ranni questline for 1st run. Still collecting limited missable items (ancient somber dragonstone etc) before starting NG+

May shift gears to my guts berserker character before I truly do a NG+ since I feel pretty overpowered right now.

I did it, but I did go back and look at a walkthrough to see if it would make it easier. It certainly does. But kind of silly they call it a puzzle… hardly a puzzle. Light the beacons. Don't die while doing it.

I'm almost finished with the game with a pure mage build. Super powerful but sometimes feels a little cheesy.

Would like to start a new game that is completely opposite of a pure mage. Any suggestions?

I'm thinking something like getting up close and personal, maybe giant swords, or anything really that doesn't cast spells. Maybe a fast melee samurai type or one with heavy armor. Some buff spells ok I guess but definitely want to focus on melee.

Any ideas?

That's basically what I played with… heavy armor with rivers of blood as my main weapon. Was lots of fun.

I played with heavy armor and dual greatswords until I got the rivers of blood, and then I respec'd because I couldn't beat Malenia. Both builds have been a lot of fun. For dual greatswords, I used claymore and blasphemous blade.

beat the final boss last night. What a great game. I have no idea how anyone keeps track of the story though! Glad to have online resources to help with that.

Still felt a bit of a cheese with my mage. It was a hard battle until I just nuked it with meteorite of astel. Main problem while playing this character is getting the timing of dodges/evasions down well. One reason I'm looking forward to at least play some more with a melee build.

Either pay super close attention, read every single item description, and take lots of notes, orrrrrrrrr let someone on youtube do the work and explain it

I think if the story was more linear, some of it would make more sense. With it being completely open world, pieces come from all over the place. I'm imagining a giant white board with pieces of story all over the place and a thousand arrows pointing every which way....

Today marks the one year anniversary of Kentaro Miura's death, as such I hope we all continue to struggle, struggle past the enemies placed before us and achieve our dream of becoming Elden Lord.

Finally completed the game today. This was by far my favorite game of all time. A lot of fun. Now I don't know if I want to start a NG+ or do a run through with a new character.

Pros: Don't have to spend time reaching the level you were, probably already have items you can use for your new spec, if you have multiple larval tears you can respec again if it doesn't work out, not starting out from nothing

Cons: If you respec before starting NG+ and find out it's a failure, you have to work through Raya Lucaria to be able to spec again and the game will be harder at that point, maybe starting from nothing is what you enjoy

Another Con: you face roll everything in new game plus so it's hard to gauge if your new spec is worth a damn. Maybe I'm a masochist, but I enjoy having to fight for my wins in this game a bit.

Not sure if I should start a new thread for this, but Salt and Sacrifice just released.

It's a 2d souls-like/metroidvania game.

If you like Souls games, I hear you'll enjoy this.

It's a different genre. Hard to compare the two since it would be apples to oranges.

I loved them both and think they are both iconic games that are "must-play" if you like their genres.

I'm an old fart with time to play neither sadly. Mass Effect was my last video game series. I'm living vicariously through you all.

After beating Elden Ring and having beaten Breath of the Wild 3 times, I still rank Breath of the Wild, higher. But I consider Breath of the Wild to be the greatest game ever made.

Elden Ring is definitely a masterpiece of a game, and is probably in my top 10, if not top 5. Bloodborne was my favorite FromSoft game since I first played it, but I believe Elden Ring has overtaken it.

I know I'm the only one but Breath of the Wild did nothing for me.

Elden Ring is definitely top 5 ever for me. Some places I explored was just simply incredible. Elon Musk agrees with me.

@elonmusk: Elden Ring, experienced in its entirety, is the most beautiful art I have ever seen

I think Elden Ring is the best open world game I've played. I stopped about 15 hours into BOTW. But I agree they're different types of games.

After some time to think about where Elden Ring sits, this is my personal ranking of From's games:

Tier 1: Bloodborne and Sekiro - Mechanically, these are the best games I've ever played. Restricting character abilities/builds really allowed From to make these games feel consistently amazing in a way that their other more open games sometimes falter. Bloodborne has the coolest weapons, setting, and story of all their games. Sekiro will make you feel like the world's greatest badass when the last boss falls.

Tier 2: Elden Ring - Just an astounding culmination of everything From did with their other games. Consistently surprised by what it presented to me from start to finish. My only critique is that it's not well-balanced for different types of builds, especially in the back 3rd.

Tier 3: Dark Souls and Demon's Souls - These are personal because Demon's was the first one I played, and Dark Souls took everything I liked about Demon's and wrapped it into a huge interconnected world. They both might have been improved in the later DS games, but these are the ones that made the biggest impact.

Tier 4: Dark Souls 2 and Dark Souls 3 - Just good versions of the DS formula, but nothing revolutionary in either. Still, even though these are at the bottom of my personal list, they're better than 90% of other games I've played.

Completely agree and well said - ER is a tremendous achievement and I love that it's exposed more people to From.

Also agree that there are balance issues which are inevitable when there is that much sheer build variety in the game. Miyazaki said he wanted to really push player freedom and allow more people to complete the game. I think he achieved that.

ER is largely "play how you want". I hope the next game is "play how we want" because when the combat design is more specific/directed/limited we got Bloodborne and Sekiro, the two most fine-tuned, tight and fun to play systems I've ever experienced.

Will be fascinating to see where they go next since ER is such a massive hit beyond the scope of any previous game/their own expectations.
