Just watched the highlight package on YouTube. Proud of Dan as a fellow Aggie, but jesus that is some moron-grade decision making. It's what I would envision Lane Kiffin doing if he coached in a playoff game.

Yeah it's hard to not second guess him. SF kicked a FG to open the 3rd Quarter. He had an opportunity to match their FG and keep it a 3 possession game with 7 min left in the quarter.

He gave the other team 1 play to rally behind and boy did they ever.

Being completely stubborn and doing the same thing again... he deserves the criticism.

The worst part is it gives ignorant b**** jemele Hill her talking point back. Sort of. Dan did at least carry them to the CG. But man, he did himself no favors today. Drag your balls off the table for once and play some common sense ball and maybe you're walking out of there with the Lions first trip to the SB. Ever.

49ers cause, I've always hated them. Chiefs cause they're turning into the next Patriots and everything surrounding the chiefs is annoying as **** lately.

was this the biggest halftime deficit overcome in a championship game?
In the Super Bowl era, yes.

According to in game stat/graphics, it ties a record for a league (NFL) semi-final game, where the eventual losing team was up 24-7 at the half, and went on to fall by a final score of 31-24.

The winning team in 1957 was the Detroit Lions. The losing team was San Francisco.

She garnered less than 90-seconds of air time in a 3 hour broadcast.

Some estimates say she's brought over $300M in additional revenue into the league/TV/whatever.

I'm even more confused now that I see the Lions kicker was 11 for 11 on field goals since they signed him. Just the sheer myopia of not realizing that when you're winning, every point you put up and every second you run off the clock is that much further towards the other team making mistakes and not being able to score enough to win is so frustrating. Then doing it again down 3 points!

You are confused?

By Dan staying consistent.

Since being resigned, the Lions kicker had missed at least two extra points. All games he played were inside with only two on the road. Made a total of just 6 field goals. Only one of them longer than 41.

Assume he means being able to line up as many people as you want on one side of the ball and they all rush the receiving team. Think the limit is either 4 or 5 guys on one side of the ball now

The analytics were very slightly in favor of going for it on both 2nd half decisions. And this was how they played this year. I dont have an issue with going.

I get that's how they've played all season but it's the conference championship game and your season is on the line.

You take the points to tie the game. That's the one that was ridiculous.

imo him even going for it at the end of the game on fourth down was stupid AF. If they didn't convert the fourth down and score the game would've been over. It was a two possession game no matter what. IMO you kick the field goal and take your points and then go for the on side. I get being aggressive, but it completely screwed them yesterday. DUMB

Dan has shown when he gets angry, he says F it.

Thats my guess on what happened on the second one.

Similar to the Dallas game. After he was mad they took away the TD. He became stubborn. After blowing that lead yesterday, he did the same.

I think the Oregon coach, Lanning, coaches the same as Dan. Let's his emotions make decisions for him at times.

Will be curious to watch how both of them do in the future in key moments.

It's just hard for Dan to kick field goals. Heck, even the one prior to halftime it took him awhile to finally wake up and kick it. He looks at it that he's giving away 4 points. Not gaining 3 or 0. I like playing poker against guys like him.

Dumbest rule in football strikes again! Ball carrier can just punch the defender in the facemask to break a tackle.
There actually is a rule against this, known as "The Marion Barber Rule". Barber was so effective at straight-up punching as a stiff arm that the NFL outlawed it. I mean, a legit right hook on defenders that would flatten them. But you rarely see it called. You also rarely see anyone use it like Barber did it. Partially why he was known as The Barbarian.

But they're not guaranteed. The Kicker missed more XP than anyone in the league and had one FG over 41 yards and it was inside.

I thought the same thing and someone countered with 2TD's wins the game...like, what? If you don't score, IT IS OVER.

Running the ball and wasting the TO on 3rd down was a bigger mistake than the 4th down attempts.

I think it was just an all around bad game by DC and his staff.

I think they were in a good spot at halftime and when things started to turn they panicked and weren't prepared. The quick change in momentum caught them off guard and they were just off their game in general.

There's analytics and nuance of external factors, but I have trouble thinking someone is an idiot for (1) doing what the math said was the right move and (2) part of that "nuance" being the fact that this has been a very successful approach for them. When the math is saying "dancin with the one that brung ya" is the right answer, it doesn't make him an idiot for continuing to dance. It's ok to disagree, but it doesn't make him a dumbass

I get that Campbell was playing the numbers, but the numbers being in your favor do not make it a good decision. Not to sound like Bill Parcells, but a good decision is if it works or not. That's the bottom line. NFL history is full of "great decisions" that were silly gambles and bad decisions that were sure things.

That being said, I feel like we see more and more teams losing games because they pass up free points. It feels like a regular occurrence these days. Baltimore yesterday would've been playing for the win had they kicked. Instead, they were constantly chasing points that they passed up.

I'm sure the analytics do say go for it. But you know who kicks a FG when down by 3 midway through the 4th quarter? Pretty much every other coach in the NFL. In all my years of watching the NFL, I can't recall a single instance where a coach did what Dan did yesterday. Everyone always kicks the FG. Now, maybe they've all been doing it wrong all these years. But it's hard to overlook him going so far against the grain of what every other one of his peers would do. And just saying "but analytics" isn't enough for me to overlook that.

After everything that went wrong, I feel like the worst decision was running the ball and burning that timeout there at the end of the game. That forced the onside kick attempt which is very low percentage.

I still can't believe the league still uses the onside kick. The AAF had it right when they went to a one-play, 4th-and-13 from your own 35. That would spice up the end of games so much. I imagine it'll eventually get to that point, but with all the rule changes, the onside kick isn't what it was 20+ years ago.

I think most would agree, except you have to factor in that the FG kicker was on his couch just a month ago for a reason. He's also missed XP's and his long was 41 at an indoor stadium (IIRC).

The first go for it was actually correct and if Reynolds catches the ball, the Lions probably win or tie at the end.

Huh? How's that work?

The scoring team just automatically gets that ball with no kickoff?

I agree, but that's also why you have coaches in the press box. When **** starts to hit the fan you have guys up in the box who are generally more leveled headed since they are removed from the field and the action. I would've hoped he had someone screaming in his ear to not do the things he was doing.

Reminds me of when Culley was coaching the Texans. Some absolute garbage decisions he made.

There have been discussions about it.

I think different leagues have done it differently, but it is basically 4th and 12 or 15 (NFL discussed 20) at the 25 yard line. If you convert the 4th down, you keep the ball and try to drive the ball the remaining length of field.

If you fail, the defense is 25 yards or so from scoring.
