Garrett puts together a decent program but he leaves a lot to be desired as a game manager. I don't trust him, it's been 5 years and there are still mistakes.
I'm going to have nightmares of Dak spiking that ball every time I think of this game. Double whammy of losing a down and giving Roger's enough time to beat you. Green Bay was on their heels and they had a chance to regroup and dial up a blitz. I don't know if the Cowboys win in overtime but I wanted to see it.
you people are ridiculous. Spiking the ball was the right call, the 3rd down play dez was wide open on the slant but it got batted down by the d linemen. It's game a game of inches and it didn't workout in our favor on that play. To blame Garrett for spiking the ball and losing the game is such a joke.
With ~50 seconds left, and each playing taking about ~7 seconds, Cowboys could run a maximum of 7 plays. Maybe even squeezing an 8th counting the kick. I'm not saying that time wasn't a factor, certainly they have to play with tempo, but maximizing the opportunities to move down the field was the higher priority. Obviously 3 opportunities to make 10 yards is more than 2.
A spike is appropriate with ~20 seconds left. At that point you have 2, maybe 3 plays with a kick. Therefore time becomes a higher priority than number of opportunities. To me the math is simple and I fail to see a counter argument in the numbers. I understand that had the Cowboys made a first down the spike would have been moot, but the whole point is that the Cowboys willingly limited their opportunities to make the first down by 33%.
I don't necessarily want to say that Garrett (and his staff) are the only ones who would panic in that situation. Most coaches (including Sumlin) can't manage a game, they manage people. That is a difficult job and one that an Xbox Madden Football junkie can't do. However I am dead serious that I would rather have the Xbox Madden Football junkie making in game, big picture decisions than someone like Garrett. Those kids have more reps than the Garrett's of the world at making these decisions. Those kids would not spike the ball. Football isn't that complicated, in the end it is just basic math.
