Sounds like Apply Texas changed from July 1 to August 1 to apply at A&M for seniors in high school graduating spring 2021. If that's true, after you apply in August, when do you hear about acceptance and when do you apply for dorms? When do they go online to choose potluck roommate?

In the past, the first acceptance letters went out in September. That was mainly top 10 applicants who normally heard within a few weeks after they had a complete application file. Review admits could have heard anytime but many heard in early 2020 through March. Applicants have until the December deadline to get their documents to us. It is really, really early to try to pinpoint when decisions for the new cycle will be made.

You can apply for dorms after you have been admitted. Further questions about housing can be directed to Residence Life on campus.

My daughter will be top 10% (currently #1 in her class, whoop) but has been unable to take the SAT, should she just apply Aug 1 with no scores?

Yes, test scores are now optional for those applying for Fall 2021.

How will the removal of SAT/ACT scores affect admissions into programs like Engineering?

Engineering applicants already go through a holistic review process.

We evaluate class rank (not specifically GPA) and everything submitted with the application - outside activities, leadership, employment, the essays, etc. Although now optional, students may continue to submit standardized scores from their SAT and/or ACT tests for consideration for admission. Submission of tests scores will not create any unfair advantage or disadvantage for those students who provide them.

Thanks for replying to all of these. My son is also 2021 and goes to a small tech high school that does not rank outside the top 10%. He is in the first quartile with about a 3.74 on a 4. scale. He did take the SAT with a score of 1230 which is well below the old auto admit score. He will have taken 10-12 AP classes and two dual credit classes.

A&M looks at a variety of factors: class rank (not specifically GPA) and everything submitted with the application - outside activities, leadership, employment, the essays, (test scores if provided), etc. If he decides he wants to send in his test scores, they will be included in the review process.

The number and types of different offers depends on many variables how strong that particular group of applicants is, how much room there is at that time for the different offers, etc. It is very, very early in the process since applications are not even open yet. Choice of major is not a factor for freshmen admissions. Plus we are all in uncharted waters due to the virus.

He can read details on the change of curriculum from Galveston to College Station at https://www.tamug.edu/admissions/Change_of_Curriculum.html

He really should call an admissions counselor at 979-458-0950. They can discuss his particular situation with him. They can discuss his interests and help him understand the different majors he is interested in.

Thanks so Major is only taken into account for engineers and Mays students? I know those slots are competitive but you are saying the rest are just in one big pool after the 10%. Is that correct?

After top 10%, all applicants go through a holistic review process. Choice of major is not a factor for freshmen admissions.

Are teacher recs required if your student is already top 10%? If so you include those on Apply Texas?

Letters of recommendation are not required for any freshmen applicants. Admissions will review the first two that are received. You cannot attach letters of recommendation on ApplyTexas. Applicants can upload them to their Applicant Information System (AIS) page when given access. If the recommender prefers, they can mail the letter directly to Admissions.

Whoop! Daughter application all submitted with confirmation email. 3 questions -
1) transcript is being submitted through the high school electronically, will we get confirmation when A&M gets it or do we need to confirm w high school that they sent?

2) Also if hoping to get into Mays Business School, we were told usually first approx 900 business majors to apply get in - major selected was business but nowhere on Apply Texas did it say specifically to apply for Mays - is it assumed Business major means Mays?

3) if anything is missing, will we get notified or when should we follow up with Admissions that they have everything needed - she's top 2% of her class so quicker acceptance than if holistic?

Thanks for always checking this forum!

Did you submit the scholarship application? Its the only chance you get to apply for TAMU scholarships for freshman year.

She will receive an email from A&M with her UIN in about a week or so. She should follow the instructions in the email to set up her Applicant Information System (AIS) page at applicant.tamu.edu That is where she will check which documents have been received and processed. There will be a specific My Documents/Received Documents tab at the top. Processing does take some time so she can check that tab periodically.

Business does means Mays Business School.

http://admissions.tamu.edu/freshman/apply will show her details on what is required and how to get the documents to A&M. Top 10 will hear a decision sooner.

Is acceptance still on a rolling basis for auto admits?

Will the elimination of academic admit possible allow review applicants to receive earlier (before winter break) admission decisions (like those who would have qualified for academic admit) or will the bulk of them still be released Jan-Mar?

For domestic freshmen applicants, Top 10 applicants with a complete file in our office often hear a decision within a few weeks with first letters in the past going out around mid-September. Since applicants have until December 1 to apply and Dec. 15 to be sure the supporting documents are in our office, it is not until after that do we know how much room we have for Review Admits. As a result, Review Admits may hear a decision anytime although after January 1 is more likely. Hopefully Review Admit decisions will be completed by March.

For a normal, non-COVID freshman class prior to the elimination of the academic admit (such as fall 2019 freshman admits) - what percentage of incoming freshmen were top 10% auto admits? Surely top 10% doesn't take up the majority of incoming freshman?

https://web-as.tamu.edu/ecardimages/2018/EAST/freshmen-bythe-numbers.pdf has some numbers. 51% were admitted from the top 10.

Engineering students take up just under half of incoming freshman. Typically around 4000 students.I would reckon most, in the past, were top 10% and academic admit, as they went/go through a separate review process.

Thank you. She received her email today - a couple things still needed to turn in (meningitis vac record?) so she'll work on that. Hope you don't mind us asking questions on this thread during the process. She's excited!

TAMUAdmissions,

My kid is not Top 10%, but high test scores, and probably will be National Merit semifinalist and have some other extracurricular finalized in about a month. Is it worth waiting for the other stuff to beef up the resume or should she apply now?

We are glad to answer questions. There are many ways to reach us. If you wish to speak with an admissions counselor, you can call 979-458--0950. The general phone number for customer service is 979-845-1060. If you have access to your AIS page now, you can go to Contact Us. The general email address is admissions@tamu.edu

Freshmen applicants are encouraged to apply now. We will still consider anything added to the file if received by the December deadline.

Thanks! Ugh - her application still says incomplete. Everything is in including high school transcript but sounds like her SRAR still needs to be confirmed. Did we do something wrong or Is that normal? How long does that usually take? Not worried about her getting accepted but concerned about slots filling up at Mays while we wait. I guess we just keep checking the site?
TAMUAdmissions

She can go to Contact Us on her AIS page to ask a specific question about her file or she can call the customer service number above on Monday to ask. AIS updates as processing occurs. It does take some time. She can continue to check AIS from time to time for updates.

@TAMUadmissions

as an out of state student do you recommend using the Coalition application? If so, does she have to do anything else, for example: sending scores, sending recommendations, additional essay, transcript, etc?
TAMUAdmissions
How long do you want to ignore this user?

http://admissions.tamu.edu/freshman/apply has all the required documents for domestic freshmen applicants - does not matter whether in state or out of state. There is a little bit of wording there about the two applications. ApplyTexas is fine to use. If applying to many schools out of state, some prefer to use Coalition so they can use the same application.

Thanks! Is the university still looking at first round of acceptances listed on the AIS site around mid-September? Which tab will show they've been accepted and can then register for student housing?
TAMUAdmissions

It will be very clear on AIS if an applicant has been accepted. In addition, they can access and read the specific letter through their AIS. A few letters may start going out around mid-September. It will take some time for those to actually arrive.

The A&M application and the Coalition application have a slight wording difference on Essay A. (paraphrasing a bit). Will this slight discrepancy matter if she only sends in the Coalition application?

Coalition app -...What unique opportunities or challenges have you experienced throughout your life....
