Screwworm eradication was a case of government actually doing something right. Now, well…ugh.

T&P for ranchers and beef industry folks in the state. Hopefully this can be contained asap.

Of course they'll believe that. DOGE cuts had nothing to do with this. But stupid gullible people will believe it.

Yep, page 2 is a perfect example

Thankfully FDA granted emergency use authorization to use Dectomax to treat it. Much better than the paste they had to use in the 1970s.
If you think it's going to be bad for the beef industry (which it will be), it will be terrible for the whitetail population.

Now is not the time to play the blame game, there is plenty of time for that later. This is an all hands on deck do whatever it takes situation. Some of us remember what happened last time and it was terrible. If they get established hold on to your butts. It was not cool seeing deer herds drop by over half among other things.

I started carrying a rifle in 65. Sometimes hunted all weekend without seeing a deer. Grampa took down top and bottom strand of barbed wire off fences and replaced with slick wire. Also helped Grampa during the summer to catch, debride, doctor, and collect larvae.

What a time.

I still have a reasonable amount of faith in TAHC and TP&W. Work with too many good folks in both agencies not to.

I have no idea what to think of the USDA anymore although I hope that Brooke has made some much needed changes.

GTFO of here blaming a screw worm outbreak on DOGE cuts.

Effing laughable.

Why do I look forward to the MSM and libs to now make this the number one issue in the mid terms?

AP already trying put blame on Rollins and turn it into a scandal because she said yesterday there were no confirmed cases within 1 mile of the US border, despite claims.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

Well, technically it's 45 miles from the border. So…
Regardless, that was very dumb of her.

Doge had jack **** to do with this one. Blame it on Mexico not releasing sterile flies along the buffer zone.

Sterile flies are not the only option to stop NWS. But it is an expensive option and really good if you need it you are a contractor that needs a $100 million plus construction project.

She was specific in her statement by saying "confirmed." Nothing had been confirmed near the border or in Texas until today.

She was very aware of what she was saying and it wasn't dumb.

Once it gets in the wild is there another way? You can treat livestock but wildlife is a whole other (and larger) issue.

With the amount of high fence ranches, you might be able to treat it through the deer feed. The trick is getting the deer to eat enough of it to get it into their system. When there's a lot of other forbes for them to eat, that becomes a problem.

High fence ranches are a minuscule portion of the deer population in the state. And don't forget it isn't just deer, it is basically all warm blooded animals that can be effected.

Wildlife feed laced with ivermectin is an option.

Depends on where you are in the state. There are portions of South Texas where you can drive for miles and not see a low fence. It's going to be more about those landowners protecting their herds. If this hits the state wild hog population, I doubt people will complain much.

Her statement was 100% accurate and the appropriate thing to say at the time. Do you confirm results before knowing what the results are?

The problem is if it is present at all in a local vector it will be.a constant and expensive problem. Eradication is best and we know that can be done with sufficient effort.

How did we get here?
I cant recall if MX or the US slowed down the sterile fly production. Or did MX ban flights to drop these flies again?

Panama slowed down during COVID due to a supply chain disruption. That broke the containment barrier and it's been migrating ever since.

Yep, the party that wants everyone to stop eating meat because of climate change is going to do a 180 and suddenly start caring about beef, cattle prices, etc.

Book it.

So not enough has been done in the last 4 years to get this contained?

Just not producing enough sterile flies?

The containment perimeter was pushed into Panama, where the bulk of the sterile fly production occurs. Mexico has been playing catch-up because it didn't need to produce large quantities of them, with Panama serving as a buffer and a chokepoint from S. America. They also suck at reporting and telling the truth, so they weren't accurately reporting either. If we had known sooner, the US would've surged production south of the border
