So ivermectin kills this. It kills almost 0 cattle. But will tank demand once soccer moms see pics of maggots eating live hogs.

So this is Covid 2.0 as far as being overhyped? But will make beef prices lower?

Not sure about Ivermectin, tick riders are telling us Dectomax is the magic elixir.

This whole sterile flies thing is completely new to me and amazing. Science is cool.

It works because the female fly only mates once. So you flood the zone with irradiated (sterile) males that compete with the non-irradiated native males. Females that mate with the irradiated males produce no offspring. Over time screwworm reproduction and population collapses.

  • Found the boxes in our pastures as a kid
  • A client mine in the early 80's worked on the original projects. Fascinating story at the facility in the RGV

I asked grok and it said 171,000 confirmed cases with no death's being reported.

How is this not Covid 2.0?

"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

Untreated it has a dang near 100% fatality rate, they die of sepsis. That is why it hits deer so hard, obviously nobody is treating a deer that has it. Cattle, especially calves are very susceptible to it. There are tons of cows that nobody is laying eyes on daily so that often means they are beyond saving once it is caught.
If you really believe this is "covid 2.0" and no big deal, go to a sale barn and tell that to all the ranchers there. Report back the results.

Somewhat related, but there's more gossip and misinformation spread at a sale barn than a hair salon.

You are right about that for sure, my point was I was hoping he would say that crap to a couple of old guys who were around for the last outbreak and they would give him an earful.

No offense but you don't really know **** about this entire ordeal (you've admitted that) and how much stress it is going to create for ranchers and how potentially devastating it may be for wildlife, especially the deer. This wiped out the deer in parts of west Texas in the 60/70s and created a ton of problems for ranchers.

It is not Covid 2.0 or whatever ridiculous thing you referred to it as… it is going to create a ton of problems, stress, and financial burdens on ranchers and outdoorsmen. It is potentially a very bad thing.

But sure, just rely on Grok to tell you what happened 50-60 years ago.

The bold part is the difference between now and the 50's and 60's, imo. Before we were starting from scratch, this time at least we have something to work with immediately (sterile flies and parasiticides that we did not have back then at the beginning). I am very concerned though that the fly plants in McAllen and Mexico are so far behind given what we knew a year ago and that NWS was definitely going to make it to the US. I am cautiously optimistic that we get a handle on this reasonably quickly and the huge die offs we had in the 60's do not happen again in our wildlife herds.

You'd think we'd be ready given I've been following this for over a year now but the government is never truly efficient and rarely prepared. I hope you're right about the minimal die offs but the deer is what worry me the most… can't exactly treat them like you can cows or other livestock.

Also can't time fawning to happen in colder weather when flies are somewhere between not as active and dead.

TTHA and Deerdude, I agree and the timing couldn't be worse for this year's fawn crop. My ranch is 70 miles from the RG as a crow flies, so I am concerned but as I said above I don't think we have a repeat of the 60's. If you add the value of wildlife to the state agricultural economy it's as big as the cow/calf segment and cotton crop value combined. Therefore, I think things happen differently this time, before the 90's deer/wildlife wasn't a cash cow like it is now.

Ivermectin can be used as a preventative. Dectomax (injectable) and Exzolt (topical) are being used as a preventative and treatment of confirmed cases.

I did read somewhere that there are basically no fly zones in certain parts of Mx. those fly bombers are maybe Piper Cubs or 182's it's been a few years, but basically a slow, low flying aircraft.

Big guv also dropped the ball at Darian Gap in the first place. That they would fix what they broke is expected.

Yeah I read about it on Gemini, it's just something I'd never heard of before. I guess since - until now - it hasn't been a concern here.

Really diabolical that the fly releases are happening now during watermelon season, and with Fourth of July picnics just around the corner.
