Posting more in the context that Vivek will probably win the Ohio Primary and put his foot in his mouth by saying this, I don't believe this statement does anything but hurt his case for Christian voters.

***God should be capitalized in the title, my fault for copying the quote from the tweet

That's weird a Hindu guy doesn't believe Jesus is God!

What should he have said?

Put his foot in his mouth? Shouldn't we expect him to tell the truth about his beliefs because that's what he is doing. I'd rather have Vivek saying he's believes differently than I do and owning up to it and knowingly vote for him than have Talarico say that he shares my faith tradition but he is right about it and I am wrong in my practice of it.

I don't think he'll be able to govern competently if he loses the election, and I don't think he'll win the election with statements like these.

I've never worried about a Hindu walking into a shopping mall near me with an explosive vest strapped to his chest. Until that happens, being a Hindu isn't a disqualifier.

So you're saying voting is public declaration of faith? Here I was thinking that was baptism.

He should have simply stated "I am Hindu and follow that religious tradition.", and not directly oppose scripture with his statements regarding Jesus Christ.

No, that's putting words in my mouth that I never stated. I am saying this was politically a dumb thing to say if he's trying to swing Christian voters.

So you want him to be dishonest about what he thinks. Got it.

I think the mayor is a complete fraud, but this is a very silly criticism.
I am much prefer his honesty here as opposed to trying to hoodwink people about his beliefs has done previously

I just weight that higher than a candidate's ability to thread a rhetorical needle to avoid losing hypothetical identity politics votes.

At least he is being honest this time, Hindus believe in many gods and he is letting you know what he believes. Don't have to agree with it but a lot better then Talarico lying about Christianity.

Well I guess we'll have to see how voters respond to this on election day. I was under the impression that saying Jesus Christ is not the way to heaven might annoy some Christians here.

My comment wasn't pointed at you. But whoever made the tweet, and any others like it making the rounds around the 'net, do have that intent. The only reason this is out there is to drive a wedge between Christians and Vivek.

I don't think this will be as effective of an attack as you seem to think. As stated elsewhere on this thread, his honesty about his beliefs will actually be appreciated by Christians at large. I don't know of any Christians in fear of the great Hindu war against non-believers.

I'm quite certain that not every politician I have ever voted for was a Christian. I pray for their souls, but I vote on their policies. I'm not going to be "annoyed" that someone believes differently than I do.

I know that Vivek is a very smart guy. However, being a brown and non-Christian, he has a certain disadvantage in America because some parts are very racist and very religion-obsessed, and some parts just want a good administrator who think America-first.

Vivek also runs the risk of being smeared because of him being of Indian origin and a Hindu. He needs to read the room about H1B and STFU about it or address people's concerns. He did not say that Americans are dumb or anything like that but he got smeared by his opponents who grabbed the chance to twist his words.

He should also not be talking about Jesus or Christianity as he cannot win the discussion or argument. He will always lose, even if he is right. So better to stay away and say a generic "you have your beliefs, and I have mine. Let's respect each other's beliefs, that is the American way". But him being an intellectual, he gets into discussions not realizing this would be used against him.

In summary, VR needs to learn when to not open his gob.

Too bad the talking point didn't go as planned.
The Democrat propaganda mill needs to go back to the drawing board because this one failed in test marketing.

If that is the most dirt that can be found, then Vivek must be a pretty good candidate.

Want to be upfront: I'm a Christian and I believe Jesus is the only way to the Father. That's settled for me. So this isn't me arguing Vivek is right about Jesus. He isn't.

But I can't square the idea that a Hindu candidate honestly stating Hindu beliefs is a political self-own he should have avoided. Scripture doesn't model a religious litmus test for civil authority. Isaiah 45, God calls Cyrus, a Persian polytheist, his "anointed," explicitly saying "though you do not acknowledge me." In Jeremiah 27 He calls Nebuchadnezzar "my servant."

Daniel served under both without requiring either to convert first.

Romans 13 frames the magistrate's job as restraining evil and rewarding good, not confessing Christ.

The thing that bothers me about the "he hurt himself with Christian voters" framing is that the implicit fix is for Vivek to fudge his beliefs for votes.

That would make Christianity into a tribal badge a candidate wears to be electable, exactly the kind of "Lord, Lord" profession Jesus warned about in Matthew 7:21. I'd rather have an honest Hindu than a strategic Christian, and I think that's actually the more biblical posture.

I am a Christian but the person I vote for doesn't have to be one. That's a mixed bag anyway given the large number of denominations or sects that often have widely diverse beliefs compared to mine (essentially Presbyterian upbringing but am not one today because the group has gone insane - I belong to a Catholic parish but haven't actually converted so I do not take sacrament, etc.).

I don't live in Ohio so can't vote for Vivek, but he seems like the better of options in that race to me. Sound policy governed by consistent principles are what I want. I don't have to agree with every decision a politician makes but I want it to come from a logical framework and not mob-driven emotions. I also respect people who are honest about what they are and what they believe.

John 14:6

Jesus says (according to Christian scripture): My way is the only way and there is no other way
Muhammad says (according to Islamic scripture): My way is the only way and there is no other way

Logic tells me at least one of these two are wrong. Maybe both.
What is the truth? There can only be one truth. People don't like to hear it and have been fighting and killing over it for centuries.

This is why I dislike organized religion where the goal is to get more followers. It's now a business were love and compassion have gone out of the window. All bad human flaws still show up.

This whole discussion of the right way and if there is only one right way is dumb. No one really knows and everyone is just guessing based on childhood or adult brainwashing.

Summary: People should use their own brain that God (if you believe) gave them.
