1984 warns readers exactly of what the UK government did with this reading list. I can barely process that irony.

And LOTR, which is considered the greatest work of fantasy ever written and it's not even close, is just insulting. It was a good vs evil allegory on Tolkien's experience in WWI. And now UK is taking the side of Mordor / Germany with this warning.

The UK sucks and should go the way of Atlantis.

another thread devoid of liberals! What a shocker.

I miss the libs of old. Many of my teachers were libs. They loved literature and value of the classics. They would have died on this hill defending these great works of western culture.

They seem to be all gone now.

No kidding. It's literally a work of satire on British politics and government.

It was required reading in high school (~1983).

The version I read was footnoted... identified who in real life Swift was targetin, threw under the bus w/ the satire

So basically, being well-read and educated makes you a right wing extremist.

Reminds me of the libs of America recently saying that if you are polite, well-read, and educated it makes you a racist.

Yep, the only people who call for restriction of speech are leftists which includes US Democrats, most of European technocrats, communists, and autocrats. Pretty esteemed group the Democrats and EU have adopted.

I think this is the conclusion Elon came to a number of years ago.

If I look at myself, my parents, my wife, etc, we're basically the same as we were 30 years ago. We may have softened on some social issues and likewise grown more conservative on others. But the left, they've gone absolutely bat sh** nuts.

A lib in 1995 is completely unrecognizable to a lib today.

Yep. I think a good local example of this was Tanya. Once upon a time, she was one of the most leftist posters on here. But then she found herself sitting much more in the middle as time passed because her party sprinted so far left without her and the Republicans moved more towards the left on certain social topics.

The hatred for Tolkien is that his myth is traditional European/British coded. The hero characters are white, male and virtuous of character. There is no "representation" girl bossing or forced diversity. It is in many ways another stark warning about complacency and letting evil and the barbarians creep back into the world until they are not in some distant land but at your door step.

Where are the horse and the rider?

Where is the horn that was blowing?

Where is the harp on the harp string and the red fire glowing?

Where is the Spring and the harvest and the tall corn growing?

They have passed like rain on the mountain. Like a wind in the meadow.

The Days have gone down in the West behind the hills and into shadow.

How did it come to this?

I've thought of that phrase before as really applicable to the current situation of the West and Western culture being under assault. Not how he meant it of course, but it just fits.

They have floored the accelerator to destruction. This might be the fastest we've ever seen a once great world power implode.
