That is not a simple diplomatic transport aircraft, but is their version of a 'doomsday' command and control plane (think, E-4/Tacomo aircraft). I have seen reports of embassy staff/diplomatic evacuations but nothing really substantial on that.

Regardless, the tanker seizures have been legal and there are a lot of false 'law of the sea' experts right now on X and elsewhere that have no clue what they were talking about (just as there are a lot of 'unusual activity' ATC experts).

I'm not real worried about the Russian barking chihuahua's talking about sinking a USCG ship etc, as Putin always has a class of those advocating for ridiculous things but they functionally serve just to be the nationalist/militarist mouthpieces and nothing else 99.9 percent of the time. Agree with the above we don't really want to be in a shooting war with the Russians, but doubt anything else comes of this.

Ultimately this strengthens the Executive.

SCOTUS if it ever got there will say Congress has to define "war". They cannot agree on basic rules law nor what a woman is but SCOTUS will defer.

Congress will stalemate, status quo on "war" powers will continue.

I like Rand, and Hawley too for that matter -- most of the time. However both are also "idealists" and I think naive. The world isn't quite as black and white as they would make it out to be and their actions on things like this only hurt 1 party, that just so happens to be the party they align with on 90% of the issues.

There's a podcaster, former Army Ranger, that has spent a lot of time in VZ and even more in Colombia on joint US drug interdiction ops. (Such cooperation by VZ stopped at the end of Chavez's regime and continued under Maduro.)

He has been staying in Cucuta, a Colombian VZ border town for the last few weeks. There are a handful of armored personnel carriers and a few soldiers there. A ton of journalists are there but the border is quiet. VZ citizens cross the border to shop and take their purchases back into VZ. IOW, no signs of a humanitarian crisis there.

Wasn't on. When those systems are on it's like a bat signal that says here I am. So they were off on Jan 3rd. However, the US knows the location of all of them and blew them up anyway. It was a great show of force months in the making.
