12-15 people in a tiny apartment, likely impaired and people going in and out? It may not seem like it, but it would be easy to lose track of someone in that setting.

Sitting up on the rail for a pic and lose your balance? Wouldn't be the first time. Such a sad story.

Am aware of a coked up/drunk attorney who did exactly this at a Mexican resort back around 1980. Likely happens a lot more than we hear about.

When I was at A&M, a friend of mine had been drinking. He slid on a railing in the parking garage, lost his balance, and fell to his death.

This is most likely something exactly like that.

However, it's odd that these people gave the family conflicting stories, that no one saw anything in a very crowded area, and no one noticed that she was gone? The police need to do their due diligence, but I fear the family might be tortured by the questions the rest of their lives.

Was this at University Tower at the intersection of University Drive and Texas Ave? Someone fell from the top when I was at A&M, maybe it was 1997?

I see there's a new building replacing the old University Tower building.

It was the Southside garage on campus.

There was a young man from Crocker hall that went off the NS parking garage around that time, between the garage and the physical plant.

Yes I also believe someone fell at University Tower in the late 90s and went through the glass roof into the pool area.

Yes that's the one... he went through the glass roof at UTower. I just remembered from your post. I think it was 1996-97

This is college.I've walked into any number of random college parties where no one there knew me nor cared to keep track of me. I could have jumped off a balcony and no one would have noticed.

She was with friends at the party and her mom said she was staying the night there so there had to be people there that knew her. Reports say the body was found at 1 AM so there would have been an intense amount of emergency activity in front of that apartment building and at that time I assume the party was still raging. Weird. At this time I guess the likeliest scenario is a tragic accident and a bunch of kids were playing dumb because minors were drinking or drugs were present. My 19 year old self wouldn't be able to clam up once I learned a friend of mine had died though.

Just crushing for that family. My heart breaks.

Spring break 86' on SPI watched a kid climb up the inside of a construction crane. His friends and even 2 units of cops came by and were yelling and pleading for him to come down. Cops gave up, as it was on a wild ass spring break night and all kinds of stuff was happening.

Kid got up to about the equivalent of 10th or 11th floor, we were on the 12th beach front and he was just below us. After basically becoming stationary in one spot for probably 15-20 min we watched him just let go and bang and clang his way down inside the triangular ladder encasement of the crane.

It was sickening and gut wrenching. Buzz kill is a huge understatement. A couple of folks puked that watched it, I almost did. Kid was tangled up about 15 feet above the ground and I guess friends and bystanders got him out.

He was thrown into a vehicle and they hauled ass. I packed my stuff and left a few hours later. The following afternoon sitting at home at the kitchen table the 6pm news comes on and to my utter amazement one of the local channels is interviewing the kid in the hospital.

I was floored. I wanna say he was a swimmer from TCU and had absolutely no recollection of the entire day before, much less crawling up a construction crane. He had like 2 broken arms and I think like 1 ankle foot and lots of bruises. How he survived I will never know.

Since then I am dreadfully afraid of booze/drugs and tall structures of any kind. For myself and others. The peril is so real in an altered state.

I agree. I'd really like to learn towards accident over foul play. For Austin PD to this quickly though role it a suicide without VERY good evidence is disgusting. That determination is going to make an already horrible situation for her family infinitely worse, so it damn better be the locked down right call.

But sometime just doesn't pass the smell test here. Girls just don't get out of each other's sight at parties, and house parties, even bedrooms are rarely off limits...

South side garage next to the Quad?

I heard this story as a fish and remember in memoriam stuff in the stairwell.

I lived there in 97 and nobody fell from the tower to my recollection. Of course, us lowly poor kids out in the University Tower ghetto weren't always privy to what went down in the tower proper.

No I don't think he did.
As someone said he went crashing through the glass.

I wonder if we could look through old editions of The Batt and see an article about it.

The Tower incident was '99. I thought he lived initially as the atrium below broke his fall, but another poster said he didn't make it so perhaps he later passed.

I am not sure about the year, but it did happen while I was at A&M.

I got on campus in Fall 99...
I know the NS Parking Garage incident was prior to my arrival on campus. I believe the University Tower incident was as well. Aside from the obvious in the Fall of 99, the only other tragedy I recall was a friend from High School that died in a traffic accident on I45 near Centerville.

Maybe a different incident, but I was at A&M when it happened. Was fall'99 or spring'00.

Would be really sad if that happened 2x, but certainly possible.

This line from the Fox article is strange to me. The initial call into 911 apparently was about an unconscious person. I don't wish to be morbid but if you discovered the body of a woman that had fallen to the pavement from 17 stories up would your first reaction be that they were just unconscious? And the statement seems incomplete, does this mean she may have been unconscious inside the apartment and the call to 911 was placed then?

Quote:

The Austin Police Department said officers responded to reports of an unconscious person at an apartment in the 2100 block of Rio Grande Street around 12:50 a.m. Saturday.

Being dispatched for an "unconscious person" is based on whatever the reporting party told the dispatcher.

The RP may never have gotten close enough to see injuries or blood and assumed it was just someone passed out from alcohol or drugs. Given it was nighttime, and without knowing the lighting in the area where her body was, then it would be a reasonable assumption by just someone wanting to do the right thing and call it in.

Pro tip for the F16ers:

last year a woman was killed when she reached to pay the ticket at the parking garage with the car being in drive and her head got stuck between the door and the ticket box.

make sure you put your car in park before paying at the exits!

Details from cell phones and personal devices might help reveal more, as will toxicology reports. Some of the surrounding is sidewalk and street but some may be landscaping, which may have reduced the apparent effects of a fall.

People will do some risky things under the influence that are greatly out of character from their normal selves. That's sadly the most probable explanation.

Me too, but it seems pretty weird that she would go to Austin for a football game and then decide to kill herself there. Something's not right here.

Unless it was an accidental drug overdose or something else happened to her other than falling off the building this is just odd.

Just a nightmare situation for the family and awful.

Imagine you're a 19 year old at some party and girl you don't know gets drunk and falls off the balcony.

You're no where near the accident but you're really drunk and have a joint and maybe something else on you. What do you do?

Based on the street view there are a bunch of businesses, trees and overhangs. I'm assuming she was black out early and her friends put her night night in the bedroom while party was raging. Had to puke or felt sick and woke up to get some cool air and probably tripped or leaning on rail and just stumbled over.
Probably hit the trees and maybe an over hang before landing on the concrete just looking like a hobo sleeping.

Good point, and do recall that there was similar reporting of police responding to a call about an "unconscious person" after the call from the surviving roommates at the Kings Road murder in Idaho after their bodies were discovered. I doubt the roommates assumed they were just unconscious if it was a bad enough scene that there was blood leaking through the exterior wall, it could just be that was what the dispatch relayed to avoid distressing details over the scanner.
