In January, about 23 million birds were culled on American farms, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Of those, about 18.8 million were "layers" bred to produce eggs while just 2.2 million were "broilers" raised for meat.

"We're not seeing drastic reductions in the broiler flock compared to the laying flock," said John Cranfield, a professor and agricultural economist at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada.
Layers and broilers are different birds with different genetics. The lengths of their lives also differ, making egg production more exposed to the virus.

"It takes about a month and a half, maybe seven weeks to get a broiler chicken to its market weight," said John Cranfield, a professor and agricultural economist at the University of Guelph in Ontario. "Whereas an egg-laying hen is going to be about five months to get to the point of laying eggs and then it's probably going to be laying eggs for a year."

Tell me what exactly Trump had to do with killing nearly 20 million egg laying chickens in January?

It's not just eggs we're watching. It's milk, produce, meat, poultry, etc. It's not just $20 dollars a month for eggs. It's $20 dollars a month PER ITEM.

Yes, I can afford it, but the majority of the population struggles to make ends meet.

Either way too many people here grew up with a silver spoon in their mouths, or they forgot where they came from.

I haven't.

I didn't even get the luxury of eggs growing up. They were too expensive. I got oatmeal every damn morning. Probably why I love eggs so much now. They still feel like a luxury, and I eat two every day.

So inflation in pricing of common food items was not a big deal when prices doubled under Biden, but now that they have continued going up a month into Trump's term, it is a huge deal and should be blamed entirely on Trump? You are straining your already weak credibility.

People on a budget and not as well off as you.
Come on now. If you consume 4 dozen in a month that's only a $20 difference to your household budget

Think some of you are being a bit dramatic

If you can't handle $20 probably shouldn't be posting on TA during the day

Maybe go without Netflix if you must

Kill a bunch of chickens in January, then complain about the price of eggs in February and March. Seems pretty on brand for the democrats these days.

I personally won't buy items that I feel are overpriced (if I have a choice) even if the amount of money is meaningless to me. Part of it is a weird sense of duty to the market. I would probably do this even if I were a billionaire.

Hmm paid 8.99 for organic. I usually buy 36 a week.

36 a week? Do you run an orphanage or something?

Myself, my wife and two kids eat roughly two eggs every day of the week haha. Sometimes my littlest will only eat one, so 36 works. I'll tell you what else has gotten pricey, berries of any kind. Almost $10 a pop at Costco for organic strawberries, blue berries, and blackberries. Growing kids are the real problem.

It's probably a combination of outside supply and demand reduction due to pricing pressure.

I think that's what the politicians count on who put policies and regulations in place that force prices to go up.

True, but any good Mexican worth their salt is buying eggs by the tonnage right now so they can have their eggs ready for their kids to hunt and then crack over everyone's heads.
