Egg prices

This is probably a combination of all three:

1) Supply: Chickens go from egg to egg producers in about 6 months. We are likely also importing eggs now that we wouldn't be able to import at normal prices. The bird flu stuff has been a worry since well before December.

2) Seasonal demand: Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years means family get togethers, and eggs are cheap protein.

3) Elastic demand: Might have been some switching to egg substitutes or more shelf-stable eggs in the short run. I could see some fast food joints etc. moving to powdered eggs in the very short term. There might be enough of this around to help demand for a month or so. Also, places that feed A LOT of people, like, say, prisons, rely on eggs for protein. They might have been able to switch to something else in the short term.

Regardless, it was silly for the left to make a big deal about this, because it is clear that this is a problem that will be fixed by the market pretty quickly.

And, eggs have special importance to the Latino community due to how much protein Latinos get from eggs compared to other sub-cultures in the US. It is a more important part of their diet than many other sectors of America. So, making progress on egg prices, and being seen as doing something about egg prices, has some political importance.

Look, folks, nobody knows chickens better than me, okay? I saw the egg prices disaster, total disaster, skyrocketing like you wouldn't believe. So I said, 'We're gonna fix this, fast, bigly.' I mass-produced chickens, the best chickens, tremendous chickens, nobody does it better. We're talking top-tier, golden-feathered winners, egg machines! Now the egg prices? Boom, under control. People are saying, 'Sir, thank you, the eggs are affordable again!' I did that. Me. Fantastic job, believe me.

Reported a few weeks ago, but it looks like Brook Rollins is searching for an alternative to kills the flocks as soon as an outbreak is detected:

Quote:

Biden administration officials had defended the culling approach as the best way to contain outbreaks and cut down on unnecessary suffering of poultry birds who are likely to otherwise die prolonged deaths from the disease anyway.

"The avian flu is an extremely fast spreading virus. And within a couple of days, it spreads so quickly that most of the chickens have died anyway," Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said Wednesday in a Fox News interview.

But Rollins also reiterated openness to changing the policy, saying that they hoped to fund research into "some pilot programs around the country" that might help avoid culling infected birds.
"There are some farmers that are out there that are willing to really try this on a pilot as we build the safe perimeter around them to see if there is a way forward with immunity," she added.

Maybe get rid of free range chickens that eat bird poop that has the virus, so you don't have to kill millions of chickens to stop the spread?

Frankly I'm shocked anyone even looks at the price of eggs when they buy them. Who really cares if they are $5 or $10.
I'm sure there are plenty of people that care. Where have you been the last four years or so? Maybe you are just so filthy rich that your grocery bill doesn't matter to you.

Good point. Up until a couple of months ago the right rightfully spoke up often about the high price of eggs and everything else that had gone up at the grocery store. It's not all crickets from those same people, but it's not brought up anywhere near as much even if prices are still high, if not higher.

THIS WOULD BE A HUGE VICTORY FOR TRUMP

Brooke Rollins as the Ag Secretary and Former Aggie needs to be working this every day.

poor single moms and moms with large families definitely care about the price of eggs

so do restaurants

Saw Brooke on with Maria Bartiromo this morning, explaining what they have been doing to bring prices down and the details of that plan.
Looked good!

Why Trump won, example A.
I don't check prices of eggs, milk or other sundries. It's going to cost what it's going to cost and I've got enough disposable income not to concern myself. But I'm a divorced empty nester so it's easier for me to have that attitude.

Exactly. I've never paid attention to egg prices, I just grab a couple dozen from HEB and I'm on my way. Decided to check last week and they were $5.99 for a dozen extra large eggs. Not sure what they were before but.....OH THE ABSOLUTE HORROR!!

I think the general belief of "who really care if they are 5 or 10 dollars" is a major reason dems lost in November. The idea that the grocery cart costs are of little concern is baffling.

It goes back to the question of whether thee economy was any good understanding Biden. The market performed well. But, for the average family, the economy was tough sledding

Last week, a box of 5 doz. eggs at Walmart was just under $30. Yesterday, they were around $20. One dozen eggs last week was around $6. Yesterday, they were $3.98. They are dropping.

The strike is over. Chickens are going back to work.

And just like that, the media is going to stop talking about egg prices....

I'd bet a lot of consumers don't look at the price of eggs, I know I don't. Restaurants, bakeries, and other businesses feel the price increase.

Oh, I totally agree. Aloof, elitist libs belittling the struggles of working class folks was a big reason Dems lost. I was not one of the F16ers piling on Biden for egg or gas prices, for what it's worth.

So put *all* the chickens in torture camps instead? I'm not an animal rights nut, but the living conditions of egg factory chickens are pretty appalling.

I agree, it's not like you buy them every day anyway. For those that $10 is significant, they just don't buy as many or as often. For most people, they buy like always. It is insignificant.

I guess I'm the lone outlier because I absolutely look at all the prices especially eggs, milk and bread. I also don't make anywhere near the $300,000 everyone on this site makes.
I live in a state that doesn't have HEB so I look at Trader Joe's, and then the other grocery stores that are no where near the quality of HEB. The previous few years, I've been having to mix it up and just get the 6 eggs or half carton of milk instead of the gallon just to keep my grocery bill within reason. That obviously means my meals are decided based on those findings.

Come on now. If you consume 4 dozen in a month that's only a $20 difference to your household budget

Think some of you are being a bit dramatic

If you can't handle $20 probably shouldn't be posting on TA during the day

Maybe go without Netflix if you must
