These "stalwart conservatives" that don't want to support Trump need to be primaried. Chip Roy ( and the rest of them) are idiots. They refuse to "read the room". Do they not understand what Trump, Vivek and Elon are going to cut?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but the "conservative movement" died with Rush Limbaugh.

Trump isn't a conservative. The party is morphing into a pragmatic and populist party. You will never get more than 30% of the country to vote for conservative candidates. "Conservatives " like Chip Roy, will no longer win national elections.

Common sense will win the day. No woke BS, no DEI, America First, strong borders, no foreign wars. Abortion, and other conservative lines in the sand are losing propositions. It is what is is. Adapt or die. .

Pat Buchanan is/was a conservative populist as was Reagan. Trump is a conservative populist, however, he realizes that there is far more to conservatism than simply trying to freeze spending. He wants to get his spending on the wall, defense, etc. and then take the chainsaw to some of the Dems garbage. At this point I am far more concerned with the border, defense, Ukraine handouts, trade, etc. than with shutting down the government due to spending. There is likely little that Trump will spend that I am actually against.

populist
[ppylst]
noun
a person, especially a politician, who strives to appeal to ordinary people who feel that their concerns are disregarded by established elite groups:

So Chip is an idiot for doing the same thing Trump [supposedly] wants, just not the way Trump wants to do it?? Maybe Trump should be supporting Chip instead of demanding he kiss the ring.

I would say overspending is an issue that ordinary people feel is being disregarded. I guess that makes Chip a populist, and anyone stopping him part of the political elite.

Chip needs to read the room. Bucking Trump right now hurts any chances of getting meaningful change. But that anti Trump blowhard feels his need to grandstand and stand in the way of generational opportunities. Screw Chip Roy and the others.

Populism is the future. Conservatism died with Limbaugh. Conservatives will never win another national election. Times have changed.

When you have someone claiming to be on the right that tells you conservatism is dead, it tells you alot about that person. Policy is not important. Personality and doing what feels good in the moment are key.

The future of the party will be Chip Roy types vs Marjorie Taylor Greene types.

Spread the bashing. There were 38 of them who voted it down including Beth Van Duyne

Seems like Trump can now say it's all on them now to figure it out. But he won't beacause he likes negotiating. And is pretty damn good at it

You can have populism that still holds fiscally conservative values. You just need a candidate who also holds fiscally conservative values, which Trump clearly doesn't.

I think you are assuming less people were willing to hold their nose and vote for Trump than did. This is the real fight for the soul of the Republican party.

What is MAGA? Is it Democrats from 15 years ago? Is it Liberalism with different pet projects? Or can we start addressing the actual problems that Liberalism has caused? That is the difference between the 2 sides here.

So many Cheney Republicans here lol

Raising the debt ceiling doesn't mean we won't cut spending. It means Trump can extend/expand tax cuts & get his agenda in place without being held hostage by congressman trying to get their pork regularly.

Chip has an agenda & you idiots fall for it and his pretty, fiery words

Chip Roy isn't as bad as some are making him out to be and he isn't as good as some think he is either. He's a politician who has done some good and said and done some dumb things. Typical politician but he's nowhere near the worst.

no one has raised the fact this is likely mostly because

Chip Roy backed Ron DeSantis in the primary

In fact, he is near the best. If the government was full of Chip Roys, then we would be vastly superior to our current condition.

Ben Shapiro had an interesting take on this budget battle.

Essentially, Trump, Johnson and the Dems already agreed to the bill. His theory is that Trump wants all the spending passed under Dems before he takes office and would like the debt ceiling limit removed, so it's not an issue when he's President.

Kinda sounds like trump

Weird, it's almost like I said this exactly and got roasted for it.

Yes it's with a straight face because a lot of dumbasses here don't understand there are two variables to deficit spending: revenue and expenses.

You can add to the deficit with lower revenue and lower spending.

If you want higher taxes, no advancement of Trumps federal agenda, and for status quo federal spending programs then keep defending chip Roys.

This is 2017-2018 all over again since the re_tar_d republican caucus can't stop getting in their own way.

The points the "hard no" votes seem to be rallying around are (1) disaster aide to North Carolina, (2) farm aide, (3) debt ceiling increase and extension for two years.

Of those, the first two shouldn't be politically volatile but I guess are. Maybe others disagree.

The debt ceiling increase I can see being an uncomfortable point for fiscal conservatives but Trump is pushing on it now to clear it from the deck for a tax cut bill next year. Congress considers tax cuts to be spending and so a future debt ceiling debate will tie down and restrict what can go into a tax cut bill.

What's unique in all this is that it's the President-elect, not the current President, who is scuttling bills before even taking office.

My two-cents is Chip, et al, need to get in line. Not everything has to be solved right this minute.
