Another undeclared war and country we've invaded.

Syria is part of the Axis with Iran, Hezballah, and Hamas.. we have 900 troups there trying to keep Iran from having a greater influence. There are a lot of parties trying to influence this Syrian civil war, it's just not the US. It's no doubt a convoluted royal mess and helpless people are dying. I'm not certain how or why all this started but it's been going on for many many years, US could back away and they would all still fight. Israel could probably handle this without our involvement I would suspect.

We should back away. We should never have gotten involved. We have troops being killed in Syria over tbe decade. We've been killing people there too.

We are by definition invaders in that country against a sovereign nation and people.

We've got to change our war culture.

The best thing for the USA is the Kurds push to the south, expand their zone and link up to the Jordan border and the Jordanian Army.

that way the israeli military can funnel aid and training and assistance directly to the Kurdish Peshmerga and SDF

any commercial airliner would be insane to fly over Syria for the next decade

The Jordanians, Saudis, Emirates, etc. are all effectively dictatorships. If there's going to be a dictator in power we might as well have it be somewhat of an ally.
We usually murder those guys after a couple of years and sit back and watch the death and destruction that ensues while out politicians get rich off of it.

Turkey has never been an ally of the United States.

regarding the situation in Syria:

the HTS Harrat Tahrir al sham has a lot of former Al Nusra terrorists but is not as crazy as Al Qaeda or ISIS and their leader Al-Thani seems to be saying they will not harm civilians

SDF I have seen on the move in large convoys so they are doing something- but may be deploying to fight turkey or the HTS.

the collapse is total in Aleppo province and the Russkies and the iranians and Hizbullah are powerless right now to stop it

so strategically- that is another large victory for the good guys (us and Israel and the West)

best case scenario- all the jihadi rebel groups crush most of Assad and get annihilated at the same time- leaving the Kurds and the Free Syrian Army to rule.

I have seen alot of Free Syrian Army units running around, even with HTS guys mixed in.
There are no good guys in this fight except Christian civilians and their defenders.

Christians (Orthodox, Catholic, and Protestant) are caught in the middle and are fodder.

Pray for Christians caught in the crossfire and those forced to take up arms to defend their villages/neighborhoods against multiple Islamic groups who would see them destroyed.

It sounds like the Syrian army has sort of stemmed their losses/regrouped over the past 24-36 hours.

I am seeing all over Twitter that Hama is about to fall into the hands of the Rebels.

So unnecessary. Who the heck are the "bad guys"? We are the bad guys. Invading another sovereign nation to set up another central bank

We've got to stop the war culture in our country. We've normalized war.

It's about oil and banking with these countries.

Even if you disagree with my opinion why we are there why do you think we are there?

Fundamentally we are invaders in that country. That is wrong.

we aren't invaders- the Kurdish SDF and Peshmerga have invited us to their territory to defend them from Assad and the Turks and the Jihadis. Also this:

"As a matter of domestic law, U.S. 'defeat ISIS' activities are authorized by the 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force," the State Department spokesperson told Newsweek. "We also have specific domestic statutory authorities that authorize DOD to provide support to the SDF's 'defeat ISIS' operations."

"Those authorities are found in certain provisions of the annual National Defense Authorization Act, the Defense Department's appropriations act and certain security cooperation authorities," the spokesperson added.

LOL, 2001 AUMF. Sure, but for the fact we've armed and equipped ISIS etc. since then, up to something like 21 of the various 'rebel' groups (which rumsfeld's later 'de-Baathification' of Iraq helped to create). What a joke, no AUMF should ever again be passed that doesn't require annual and geographic specific renewal. This kind of craziness is precisely why so many of the GWOT folks in the incoming administration are sick of the forever wars.

If it doesn't stay in Syria, then where's it going to go? HTS Syria wiki page indicates that they don't get along with any real countries (except Turkey, sometimes) and their allies consist of enemy of my enemy fluctuating factions much like themselves.

Money talks. Jihadi's will trade russian gear (which they of course can't operate) happily, for whatever they think is 'the right price.' I'm not making a prediction, and the Russians may have already air-striked it out of existence, just a guess.

Looks like whatever pulled back from Hama was brief and they are about to capture the city. The idea of the Syrian Army retreat being some sort of feign is kind of laughable considering they left a lot of their equipment and many of their generals were captured or killed.

This is a strategic location. Controlling this city makes it much more difficult for the Russians to help protect Damascus and is quite possibly going to be used as a launching point to invade Latakia itself which is where the major Russian bases are.

So the Iraqi army, which the United States supports and regularly works with, could be entering the war and potentially attacking the SDF whom the United States supports and regularly works with.

Of course there's the possibility the Iraqi Army would be used to shore up the Assad regime Syrian Army and avoid conflict with the other groups. They would probably want to work with the Iranian sponsored malicious though, which the United States just bombed the s*** out of the other day.

What a mess.

this is Mad Max level insanity. It would seem the guys with the BMPs would be the Syrian Army, yet it's a Rebel propoganda piece so why would they be celebratring an SAA victory?

notice how the "Technicals" (those who are old enough to remember Black Hawk Down) get run over after trying to pass their enemy on a narrow road!!!

HTS despises and wants to destroy the Russians for their backing of Assad

confirmed that the 4th largest city in Syria (Hama) has just fallen to the Rebels.

now on to Homs due south about 60 miles. Three road networks enter into Homs from North, East and West. the Rebels can get onto the Hama - Latakia Road and cut off the Russkie Naval and Air bases from Damascus

Insightful thread on what's going on in Syria and how this group has aligned several minority groups and defectors from the Assad regime. They seem to have purged foreign jihadis, including Al-Qaeda, and have embraced Syrian nationalism as a rhetoric instead of pure Islamism.

I'm having a hard time copying and pasting all of the text here from my phone. Big takeaway is that this group does not seem to be like the Taliban or ISIS and seem to be allowing minority groups a good deal of autonomy and self-governance but time will tell. They are also operating with a great deal of military and government sophistication and appear to be well organized.
