A little late to the party. Assad is in Russia.

Posted for the quote from the new defacto Syrian leader. Would note that they've already forced Hezbollah to flee much of the country. Some mop up duty still to do.

And ding ding ding we may have a winner for the geopolitical strategy of it all:

Correct. Everything in the Middle East goes back to oil. Even our positions in the ME are tied to oil. If you think it's about anything else, you're misinformed.

US and Chinese have controlled over 75% of the oil/gas fields in NE Syria the past few years. This is a big part of the reason for the Assad regime collapse.

Pipelines are both (a) vulnerable (even if sub-sea as Nordstream demonstrated) and (b) expensive to actually construct/build. It will take substantial stability for this to happen, though I certainly hope it does. The truth is it's probably going to be safer/cheaper/more reliable to pump this stuff into a ship and float it to various European terminals still. Stable energy flows to Europe are a good thing for all of us, imho.

If this is actually true, then Israel just massively improved their security and this may result in a Lebanon free from Iranian influence as well.

Quite the development.

Wait a minute. I thought these were the bad guys

They are the bad guys in Syria. A lot of what they said from 2011 up until 6 months ago is polar opposite of what they are saying now.

The jihadi sects/groups probably have all of a couple dozen tank crews they can/will hire to operate modern weapons. Zero ability to operate a cohesive air defense system/employ patriots etc. It will be open season for the IDF on any installations they want to target.

But this is just going to breed more disunity among the jihadi factions, as the place disintegrates over the next 90 days even further, imho. Turkey, and Sunni Iraqi's seem to be the bigger winners so far regionally (with Kurds, as usual, and Christian's/non-radical muslims in Syria the biggest losers by far).

We need to stop supporting any of them now and disengage altogether. Unfortunately that prior funding has already happened and for now I'm fine with them fighting each other.

that would be awesome but there is no citation at all to that tweet

it could literally be some guy in Germany typing that on his computer

I have yet to see Al Jolani actually say that in Arabic

My advice for Syrian Christians: Run towards the Israeli lines. Now.

Something tells me a lot of Assad's stolen riches from the Syrian people are gonna end up funding a bit of the "strategic military operation" in exchange for asylum.
It is a "special" military operation, not strategic. And bow has it been special. But Putin remains a master strategist.

That last sentence is tongue-in-cheek I presume.
Not really. I mixed up special and strategic. Either way, the forced euphemism is still hilarious to me.

because the freest Christians in the entire Middle East live in Israel.

maybe Israel doesn't let them all in- but Christians can move to southern syria near the Golan Heights

and mix with the Druze and be protected by the Israeli Army on the other side of the border.

The IDF's 210th "Bashan" Regional Division, which is tasked with the Golan Heights area, began on Sunday to deploy forces to the buffer zone inside Syrian territory, including atop the Syrian side of Mount Hermon, where troops had not stepped foot for over 50 years.

The 235-square-kilometer demilitarized buffer zone was established in the 1974 Agreement on Disengagement between Israel and Syria, which concluded the Yom Kippur War, and has been manned for decades by UN peacekeepers.

However, Israel said Sunday that with the fall of the Assad regime, it considered the agreement void until order is restored in Syria.

as far as I know Israel is not open to refugees from Syria unless they are Jewish. No exception for Christians.

Probably because there would be a bunch of people suddenly "identifying" as Christians.

You know...like Baptists on Sunday mornings.

Hopefully trend continues. A lot of the Syrians living in Europe may want to go home. Jolani talked about bringing the refugees back into Syria.

Trying to cut off southern Lebanon from Syria. My guess is they are in communication with the new Syrian leadership bit hopefully this doesn't set anything else off.
