Reason for Israeli incursion: people firing at them

Quote:

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a visit to Israel's border with Syria, said he had ordered the Israeli military to seize the buffer zone between the two countries, as well as controlling positions adjacent to it, after Syrian soldiers abandoned their posts along the border.

The 155-square-mile buffer zone was created by a 1974 agreement between both countries and United Nations peacekeepers were stationed within the buffer zone. "This is a temporary defensive position until a suitable arrangement is found," Netanyahu said Sunday.

Regarding Assad's whereabouts. Best guess is Russia.

Quote:

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who was in Damascus on Saturday, fled the country early Sunday local time but his current whereabouts were still unknown, according to Syrian security officials and Arab officials. Russia's foreign ministry said later in the day that he had stepped down and left the country.

Assad had announced he would address the nation at 8 p.m. local time on Saturday, but the speech never occurred. The president's wife and children left for Russia in late November, while his brothers-in-law left for the United Arab Emirates, Syrian security officials and Arab officials said.

Sachs is right, here. And, fwiw, he doesn't just hand wave some (continuing) culpability for Trump's first term, either.

23 years after 9/11 the Taliban are back in Afghanistan and Jihadist have taken over Syria. What a waste.
"Spreading Democracy" was always a waste.

Well, except for the MIC, the private companies, and private contractors that got rich off of us invading the country where the vast majority of terrorists DIDN'T come from. Luckily for Suadi Arabia, they had oil.

Up to 300,000 Syrian civilians have been killed in this conflict… and for what gain for the United States?

The Bush-Obama legacy when it comes to the ME is nothing but an ocean of blood.

When the Shah fled Iran he temporarily lived in Egypt, Morocco, Panama, Bahamas, and Mexico. He stayed at resorts or private residence he has in Bahamas but was afraid each country would betray him. Egypt finally gave him permanent asylum and he lived in one of the palaces. He didn't go anywhere but he was also dying at the time.

My personal favorite was Noriega living out his days in a US prison. But Hillary never termed him a 'reformer.'

It is a "special" military operation, not strategic. And boy has it been special. But Putin remains a master strategist.

That is idiocy.

Did Saddam Hussein keep things stable?

how about Ayatollah Khomeini?

Yehiya Sinwar?

Hassan Nasrallah!?!?

Yes to the above. Iraq was 100% more stable with Saddam. Kept Iran in check.
