Assad's army flees Aleppo as rebel group surges

Have not seen a thread on this yet but there's a big situation going on in the country of Syria. Turkish sponsored militia groups are currently surging through the city of Aleppo, causing a mass collapse of the Syrian Army defense. They have taken over police headquarters, the intelligence agency, and the governor's mansion in the city. There appears to be almost no resistance now.

This group was founded by a former member of Al Qaeda. They have Turkish support. This is not an ideal group to be making huge deadway in Syria as while they are not quite as brutal as ISIS (hopefully?) they are still very much jihadi Sunni sharia-types.

Russian troops have abandoned a nearby air base and have been relegated to intermittent airstrikes to try to slow down the advance but thus far it does not seem to be working. Hezbollah was at one point also fighting this group but we all know what's been happening to them over the last few months.

Assad's Syrian Army in the area is now completely cut off from Damascus.

The Syrian situation is so complicated I can't even hope to explain it, with something like a dozen different militia groups and armies fighting for territory. The US sponsored SDF seems to be on the sidelines for this one but they are not friends with this particular group.

One of the Turkish leaders in government said earlier today they are considering flat out invading northern Syria soon, likely to advance against Kurdish groups they claim are terrorists.

In a lot of ways, yes. They are a regional rival with Iran and increasingly against Russia. The major dispute we seem to have with Turkey is their relationship with Israel and their actions against Kurds.

If there's going to be a regional power in that part of the world enforcing order I think we'd rather it be Turkey than Iran. That's kind of the major competition right now in the region.

Erdogan making his Ottoman Empire 2.0 play. Entire situation is certainly a lesser of evils outcome.

As much as he publicly railed against Israel, he loved seeing Hez military capacity diminished. No love lost there.

Hezbollah being out of the picture is what led to this being possible.

We should support Assad, Syria was a lot better before radicals tried to take over. DIctators in the Middle East keeps it a lot safer and stable.

Whatever happens between now and Jan 20 is theater (and human suffering/death) to put Trump's next administration under duress. And no, Erdogan is not a 'good guy' in this (or pretty much anything else).

The Jordanians, Saudis, Emirates, etc. are all effectively dictatorships. If there's going to be a dictator in power we might as well have it be somewhat of an ally.

The world does not revolve around Donald Trump or the US. This is Turkey seeing an opportunity to make a move against Russia and Iran. Over the next several decades we will see a struggle for regional leadership and Turkey has the resources, demographics, and opportunity to make a huge push in the region.

People thinking Trump or his election has anything to do with this is comical. These guys have been fighting since he was looking for an apprentice and HATE each other after what both sides have done to each other. They couldnt give a F about Trump. Hell 92% probably don't even know who he his. This is 100% tuykie seeing an opening and taking it.

Turkey has never been an ally of the United States.

regarding the situation in Syria:

the HTS Harrat Tahrir al sham has a lot of former Al Nusra terrorists but is not as crazy as Al Qaeda or ISIS and their leader Al-Thani seems to be saying they will not harm civilians

SDF I have seen on the move in large convoys so they are doing something- but may be deploying to fight turkey or the HTS.

the collapse is total in Aleppo province and the Russkies and the iranians and Hizbullah are powerless right now to stop it

so strategically- that is another large victory for the good guys (us and Israel and the West)

best case scenario- all the jihadi rebel groups crush most of Assad and get annihilated at the same time- leaving the Kurds and the Free Syrian Army to rule.

I have seen alot of Free Syrian Army units running around, even with HTS guys mixed in.

Came here to say exactly that. The vapid policies of Clinton and Obama removing Mubarak and Ghaddafi and undermining Assad have led only to misery and chaos, not to mention waves of refugees in Europe. Fortunately the Egyptian army was strong enough to remove Morsi after a year, but Syria and Libya are still basket cases.

Think a lot of this is for Turkey to rule the Sunni empire and be one step closer to Israel.

The rebels are largely ISIS and want to take over the Kurdish region. Some of the rebel groups have said they want to take down Iran.

I want the Biden administration to do nothing? They don't have anyone that can handle the mental gymnastics that is involved to do what is best for the USA. Maybe help the Kurds defensively but that's it.

I had a friend that was SF, he said the only way their intel geeks could remember all the factions in Syria was with a spreadsheet. It's a cluster fart over there

Saddam Hussein was an evil man but did keep things stable. He quelled jihadi groups in Iraq. He was a military check on Iran. Taking him out threw the entire region into chaos.

Crazy how it sounds Hussain and Gaddafi did keep things somewhat stable. When the left the power vacuum created much more violence than when they had their dictatorships. If you can figure out how to do a peaceful transition after dictators like these you should get a peace prize.

The US needs to not be at the front in situations like these. We will beat you to pulp with our military but suck at nation building. If you want to help drop a SF or small CIA team in there to train the locals to do it themselves.
