For those of you unfamiliar with military medals, the bronze star is awarded for heroism in a combat zone.

Pete has 2 of them.
Not to take away from Pete but,,,

That is not what a Bronze Star is awarded for. It is awarded for doing the job you're trained for, in a combat zone. No heroism needed.

It often goes to staff members, officers in general and senior NCOs. It often does not go to joes in the field, as there is a limit a unit can give out.

If someone has Bronze Star license plates, they were probably a staff pogue, who never left the FOB.

A Bronze Star with a V device is a whole other story.

Serious question as I don't know. Does he have power to fire the generals or where does he power actually lie?

As a 22 year veteran and current active duty member, I don't know how I feel about this. Accountability is important but really don't like the idea of Generals making risk averse decisions in fear of being fired.

Obama gutted the senior leadership of conservatives.
How? That is not how military promotions work. Maybe at the highest level, but those guys are long gone now.

That pretty much is how promotions work at the three and four star level. Three and four star officers are not selected by a board, they are nominated for those ranks by the service chiefs and Secretaries. You are kidding yourself if you don't believe political patronage plays a role in those promotions and assignments.

A four star general will have spent probably 10-12 years at those ranks by the time they retire from active duty at 40 years. I first heard Mark Milley speak in 2014 and he already had four stars. He wore four stars for approximately 8 years.

The three and four star Generals do comprise the promotion boards that select the one and two stars so they can (and do) cull from the herd those officers that aren't "with the program."

Consider the culling of Marine Generals that dissented from David Berger's adventures in force design. Those Generals who remain speak with one voice today and they won't discuss why the Corps can't keep a MEU on station 365 days a year or why Americans have to thumb a ride home when a coup happened in Sudan and there was no NEO force available. These are consequences of politicized leadership.

There was very definitely an ideological filter that was applied to senior leadership promotions during the Obama administration and those officers that rose to the JCS since then were the products of that process. Mission focus lapsed into DEI focus and green energy focus and unisex uniform focus other nonessential BS.

I was 25 when he passed in 2005 and was able to see him speak at Benning before going to my first duty station in 2003. Everything he said to us as young 2nd LT's stuck with me.

The show he was on Saturday mornings at foxnews was pretty good as well.
I'm jealous. Hack was stud.

We had LCOL Steel speak to us. Egomaniac. He finally ended up getting fired.

I believe the surprised crowd believes there are many options out there that have all the same beliefs of Hegseth…with more leadership or executive experience. Many in the military, many out of the military. Maybe fresh and unproven has some benefit.

Google Brian Stan if you want a 44 yo example…silver star instead of bronze.

If his only qualifications was fox news host then I would be concerned. Thankfully he's a 20 year vet retired major with combat experience. Far better than the litany of beaucrats that served in this post over the years

The Marine Corps needed FD in order to maintain relevancy…if you start calling that a political change you're part of the problem.

Looks like he has authored several books.
It might give one an idea where he is coming from.

He's young and doesn't appear to be tied to the military industrial complex (like Cheney)

It seems Trump is bringing in a lot of younger people (the next generation) to replace the rotted out couch
Potatoes of the boomer generation which will serve America well after trumps four years are up. You could say he's setting the table for Vance, Desantis, Moreno, ramaswamy, et al for America after Trump,

I kind of like what I am seeing.

Absolutely pitiful that short timers Ike Nancy Pelosi, chuck shumer et al are making laws that will debilitate our grandchildren long after their worthless remains are feeding worms and pushing up weeds in their local cemeteries.

Not sure about the pick so we shall see. Hope he gets a good team around him. I would have rather Trump pick someone with more international experience like William Boykin who has a ton of special forces experience, has been very outspoken against Obama's and Biden's military plans (to the point he got fired from being a professor), Delta force and commanded special operations. A lot of being a good SOD is knowing who to trust and having a network to ask for favors

They haven't read any of his books. They think he's merely a FoxNews guy. They won't admit it but it's true. Hegseth's confirmation hearings would look at lot like Amy Coney Barrett's hearings i.e. quick extemporaneous answers with no notes needed. He didn't ghost write those books.

I mean that's great and all, but can we have some more qualifications for a guy that controls the military 24/7.

21 year military officer, served in combat, infantry, double bronze star

Cool…he survived.

Chris Miller, Wilkie, Bridge Colby…all VASTLY more qualified…AND confirmable.

There's a real chance Hegseth bows out before the process even starts.

If K2 is opposed, then he is absolutely the right pick!

So here's the deal…

Trump won the electoral college…
Trump won the popular vote…
The Rs took back the Senate…
The Rs kept the House…

This after all of the lawfare and assassination attempts…

Trump has a mandate, whether anyone likes it or not…

He can roll with whomever he wants because of it, and if you stand in his way, you do so at your own political future's peril…

If establishment types hate certain picks, then I will get behind those picks…the whole point is to implement actual change in our government and policies to make us a stronger nation…

Nominating 'more of the same' isn't going to get that done, so I'm all for trying it Trump's way…
