None of these guys had experience before becoming secretary of defense. They were all politicians or bureaucrats.

Mathis and Austin have command experience and both are clowns.

exactly this a good hire ...looking at this list makes me sick

The entire list of previous secdef's is almost all politicians except for George Marshall and the two clowns I mentioned earlier.

For those of you unfamiliar with military medals, the bronze star is awarded for heroism in a combat zone.

Pete has 2 of them.

Not so fast my friend. This is not a post to disqualify Pete, I love the pick, but I had a first sergeant get a bronze star for never leaving the wire but once on a convoy he fell asleep during. Lots of first sergeants and CO's were getting bronze stars simply for existing when our OIF II deployment was ending while the Joe's got ARCOMS for doing all the work.
Seems the complaint is with the CO that wrote up the citation and not the soldier.

You can have a Bronze star awarded in combat without a Combat V device in the Marine Corps. It's basically a Meritorious Service Medal. I have a Navy Achievement Medal with Combat V device, not as good as a Navy Commendation with V and definitely not as good as Bronze Star with V device. The V device/attachment denotes valor.

ETA: Bronze star description without Combat V.

As has been alluded - Sec Def is head of a huge organization managing giant budgets. This is usually a seasoned executive with long leadership experience in large organizations.

I don't think he has the minimum qualifications. I'm afraid this job will eat him alive.

Of course, I work in the defense industry, so you guys figure I'm a deep state swamp creature.

So, what did you get your Bronze Star for?

A Bronze Star without a V device is the equivalent of an MSM, just on a deployment. For a long time MSMs were not authorized to be awarded on deployments, so lots of staff officers and NCOs got Bronze Stars for doing a good job, not for heroism or valor.

Robert McNamara under jfk was an executive at Ford IIRC…and a soldier before that.

Yes, I definitely misspoke. A Bronze star without V device is equivalent to a Meritorious Service Medal. Thank you for the correction.

I don't work in the defense industry, but that's where my concerns lie. The DoD employees almost three million people and has a budget of close to a billion dollars. Apart from possibly his stints as executive director of a couple of veterans' advocacy groups, I don't see much experience running an organization of significant size.

Most of them have been in the military for a little bit of time but not for a career. But McNamara along with the others really didnt do anything to prepare them for the job. And McNamara is one of the worst in the history of that job.

His personal life is shady, at best. More like a disaster.

I know, personal character shouldn't matter, rather how he executes the job. But leading the military seems to require some humility and high character. And the "executes the job" part; I'm not sure what level of leadership or management he's exhibited to predict success of this behemoth.

I wish there was someone with his passion and perspective that had a better personal story and more executive leadership experience.

Maybe his personal skeletons relate more to the military

Oh well, Trump's pick and I wish him well.

Austin is the original dei hire outside of shinseki. Austin is the type of officer David Hackworth warned about.

You're right, close to a trillion. Brain fart there, especially since I looked up the budget before typing that.

Well....because he had two at-work affairs, one on each of his first two wives. Fathered a kid with his at-work girlfriend (became 3rd wife) while he had a wife and 3 young kids. I'm not trying to convince anyone that I'm right. Nor does this mean he cannot do a bang-up job. I just value character, especially as the leader of the military and myself being a veteran. Yes, everyone makes mistakes. But the goal is typically to not willingly make the same mistake twice, or thrice etc.

The benefit Trump has this go around is he knows who is allies are. This guy's twitter is straight MAGA for a while now so I am on board with this. Tired of these Generals like Mattis who try to think they are more powerful than the President.

Dude looks like a domestic extremist. I'm sure the FBI logged into his phone after seeing that tat. It's almost as offensive as a PTA mom scolding a school board on homo books.

If you had read his book, you would know that he was blacklisted by his DC National Guard unit as an extremists and was rhe only member of his unit not mobilized to respond to the George Floyd BLM riots. IIRC his security clearance was also suspended pending review for his opinions. Chapter 13 of his book is a detailed plan for purging the woke bureaucrats and the rot from military culture and getting back to a a singular focus on deterring our enemies and winning the fight if deterrence fails. Trump picked this guy to flip over the tables of the money changers. Read or listen to his book.

He also says in his book how the military and society needs to lessen divorce and focus more on family values....that's a little ironic. Good thing the SECDEF doesn't run the FRG's.

I was 25 when he passed in 2005 and was able to see him speak at Benning before going to my first duty station in 2003. Everything he said to us as young 2nd LT's stuck with me.

The show he was on Saturday mornings at foxnews was pretty good as well.

Some may be against this guy, and he would probably not make it through any confirmations, but Eddie Gallagher. You want to see MSM explode mention his name. Make him head up the United States Secret Service.

Edited to add USSS.
