I didn't like the drag queen in the opening ceremony and how "intersex" female boxers, but I still watch some of the Olympics. The US has been dominating the Olympics with 71 medals. The next closest nation is China with 45 medals.

Us and China now tied in gold medals, too.

It's been a great and entertaining Olympics so far. I think I have about 8 channels covering so there's plenty of events to choose. Props to NBC.

1/3 of Chinas gold medal come from the competitions, not sports.

Most come from random sporting events/competition a relative handful of people play seriously.

I only count 3 gold medals of their 19 in a sport that aren't niche.

eta: don't really follow the sport but the highlight of the day was kristen faulkner winning a shocking gold in women's cycling after being a late add to the team. she only started the sport 7 years ago!

Earlier today I saw a bunch of the liberals from my childhood posting the stat that only US women had won gold so far and they were carrying the men. Would it be appropriate to remind them that women have been using funding from men's sports for the past 50 to prop up US women's sports against the rest of the world?

Yeah, this strategy really went nuts (and paid off) when they hosted in 2008. They spent years prepping athletes for all the rando sports and nearly doubled their medal count, and they've kept that strategy going
