We're trying to win an election and sway voters who'd ordinarily vote dem. Sorry, but tonight was a missed opportunity. It wasn't a disaster, but a missed opportunity for sure. He should've stuck to the humility/unification tone, been short and sweet on how he's focused on fixing the border, inflation, foreign relations, etc. Instead, he rambled on for 45 mins too long and opened up the door for criticism.
I'm not a Chris Wallace fan, obviously….but agree with what he just said on CNN, which was that Trump could've kept it short and sweet and shut the door on this election. Instead, he just opened the door a bit unnecessarily.
Put the opposition hat on. You have to if you want to win. Tonight could've been a slam dunk. Missed opportunity unfortunately.
Chris Wallace would never say Trump nailed anything. Even if he did exactly what was described, there is zero chance Chris Wallace would have said Trump shut the door on the election. That was the most tame and unifying Trump has ever been while staying on brand and bringing substance.
Again, take your Trump fan Republican hat off. That's what I'm trying to do. He could've said anything up there and you and I would still vote for the guy. That's not what tonight was for. The world's eyes were on him and he missed an opportunity. It went from humble and toned down to grandstanding and controversial comments…which didn't have to be made. We know the 2020 election was rigged…not the point tonight, yet he made probably 5 comments about cheating in 2020. Why?! Nothing matters if he misses the WH. Why the **** would he take any risks tonight or until November. Just get back into the WH and then brag as much as you want. It's not hard. You can't do anything if you don't win. It's not the time to take risks.
I guess where we disagree is I don't think the world's eyes were on him. Political junkies' eyes were on him. How many people watch the RNC or DNC nominee speech? I can't imagine it's a large number. No matter what he says in that speech, nobody watching is going to change his or her mind.
That's the point…he gave media and Dems all kinds of material to pull out of context and instead of people seeing headlines saying "Trump more humble and less controversial than usual" tomorrow, they'll see "same old bragging, lying Trump." When they tune into their dumb shows like the view or morning Joe, they'll be saying the same old stuff instead of saying he was surprisingly less inflammatory and seemingly humbled. Never let a disaster go to waste, right? Well, all that sympathetic equity he'd built up with moderates and potential swing voters largely wiped out with that speech. I'm still just so confused why he did that, when literally saying nothing would've been a grand slam. It's just a bit infuriating.
You think there's a media outlet that would have said "Trump more humble and less controversial than usual" with just the first 30 minutes that now will say "same old bragging, lying Trump?" You have WAY more faith in media than I do.
That's exactly what a lot of them had been saying…not the far left folks from MSNBC or WAPO, etc, but it's been shocking how tame a lot of the CNN folks had been all week and since the shooting. It was the tamest they'd been since 2015. Now they're all back on the Trump hate train. Tonight's speech shouldn't have been for the base. Those votes are locked up. Tonight's speech was supposed to be for the masses. He literally started the speech by saying he's not running for half the nation only and then regressed to a full on trump base pep rally by the end. All in all, he didn't win votes tonight. At best, it's flat, but I personally think a lot of the votes for folks who were so disenfranchised with Biden to the point of begrudgingly going against their gut and voting for Trump are now at risk again. Just a shame. Dude could've literally done the first part of the speech and ended with "why vote for me? Because I'm going to clean up all the messes Joe made" and mic dropped and walked off the stage and would've gained many a vote tonight.
As a more middle of the road conservative, you are 100% correct. It's true what they say: democrats do what is necessary to win and play chess.
GOP is playing checkers. It was a completely missed opportunity for Trump to come out and convince the 10% of America that thinks Joe and the dems were awful leaders.
He needed to pretend to speak for the independents, but he went far right.
Independents don't care about the border? Lawfare? Inflation? Taxes? Etc?
Those right wing things he was about? Ok.
