20 years ago I would have been willingly laid down my life for this country. 10 years ago probably the same. Even 5 years ago I would have.
Today - there's no ****ing way me or my son will fight for this shothole.

If you have somewhere you would rather live, go there. But don't call yourself a patriot. You clearly hate this country, too.
Is there anything our government could do to make you not want to fight for this country or send your kids off to fight?Ed Harley said:BadMoonRisin said:

There is no country anymore. It's an economic zone. Hth
I didnt call myself anything. I would defend the country from an existential threat.Ed Harley said:BadMoonRisin said:

**** Ukraine and **** Russia. Neither of those are it.
If NATO needs to get involved in that conflict, there are plenty of people on that side of the world that freeload off the agreement that can handle it.

Within two or three days after I turned 18, I proudly went down to the courthouse and registered for the draft.

Pretty high level summary

There are better articles out there with much more details, but many of those stray into his affairs, abortion, and his general Hollywood dewshbaggery which has nothing to do with the central question)

Dude, I'm not going to argue with your 'source' about John Wayne's character though I would encourage you to evaluate 'military.com' before attributing it in a discussion. I don't know if he was a coward or not. You stated he was a draft dodger. My response is he didn't have to dodge the draft because, as a married man, he was exempt. Link all the internet hit pieces you care to and it won't change that simple fact
Quote:
It's not a fact. In 1944 his draft status was changed to 1-A, like hundreds of thousands of other previously 3-A men (when the war had gotten bigger and gone on longer than the original 1-A pool could support. AFTER his status was changed to 1-A by the draft board, he had his studio pressure the draft board to change it to 2-A.
There are other hundreds sources - including his biographies - that are not "internet hit pieces" but you're not going to read them and you wouldn't believe them if they were written by John Wayne himself.
Sorry you had to find out your hero tough-guy actor was really just a run-of-the-mill Hollywood actor without and was never a hero or a tough-guy

You're making this personal and referencing events that I can't find support for other than vague assertions.. John Wayne is not a personal hero of mine. If I were to have Hollywood 'heros' they would be more along the lines of Audie Murphy, Jimmy Stewart or John Ford. Men, recognized for bravery, who were close friends with John Wayne. Show me or link me something semi official about that status reclassification and I'll look into it. Otherwise, you're just shouting an unsubstantiated opinion to validate a position that you've taken with no support.

Still trying to find some evidence. You can link the original statute from the link above. The IIi A classification was amended in Dec 1943 and then restored in 1945. I'm still trying to find a link to that amendment and the ramifications.
Just for the record though, if John Wayne were conscripted in 1944 as a result of this amendment, do you think he would have been assigned to the 101st ... Or rather would he have been assigned to a unit like John Ford or the 1st Motion picture unit like Ronald Reagan?

For those of you who say you will never allow your kid to be drafted, what exactly are you going to do IF we have a draft and they are indeed drafted?

There's never going to be a draft. This is useless legislation
Though it was always annoying that I had to show I had registered for the draft… while I was on active duty
Politicians don't want to institute a draft, and even more so they don't want a population that is engaged and has skin in their war decisions
