Not sure I'd want people serving along side of me that didn't want to be there when the bullets begin to fly. I will never advocate for a draft, which is the point of selective service. If our government is so busted that military recruitment can't make their goals, then I'd say our government is moving in the wrong direction.

Great points.

In addition to that, there was a policy study from the Cato Institute years ago that, if I remember correctly, pointed out that the draft will not produce many soldiers with the level of professionalism that our modern military commands.

If you want cannon fodder, a driaft will work.

If you want soldiers who can deal with the technical aspects of modern military systems, the draft won't accomplish very much.

Today - there's no ****ing way me or my son will fight for this shothole.

Then why haven't you left? Patriot, my ass. Turn your back on the country because of 4 years. Adios, amigo. Or find wherever else language you'll be using.

Sounds like this is just preventing draft dodging by automatically registering young adults.

Is there anything our government could do to make you not want to fight for this country or send your kids off to fight?
If yes, then you aren't a patriot and you clearly hate this country.

Obviously I'm being sarcastic, but hopefully you get the point.

I didnt call myself anything. I would defend the country from an existential threat.

**** Ukraine and **** Russia. Neither of those are it.

If NATO needs to get involved in that conflict, there are plenty of people on that side of the world that have freeloaded off of that agreement for decades that can handle it.

I quoted you, Pal. And you said you wouldn't defend this "****hole." No limiting it to Ukraine or Russia invading. Again, go find somewhere else to live. Biden sucks. I agree. But I'm not turning into a *****.

Im already registered for the draft bro. So what are you whining about? Im just saying if they call up for a draft to go fight a stupid war halfway around the world so that they can launder taxpayer money and pump the MIC stock prices, they can go **** themselves.

Because of my skin color and political beliefs, Dark Brandon told me that I am a threat to this country. My own government is more of a threat to me than Russia ever will be. They hate my guts.

Wake up, that was the previous persons point as well, it just went right over your head with your "IF YOU DONT LIKE IT YOU CAN GHEEEEEEET OUT" response.

I live and work in this economic zone now, just like the illegals that are invading, courtesy of the POS president you support.

And like those illegals, I have zero allegiance to the zone. If it ever benefits me more to leave the zone for a new zone, I will. You can bet your ass on that amigo.

There are better articles out there with much more details, but many of those stray into his affairs, abortion, and his general Hollywood dewshbaggery which has nothing to do with the central question)

Dude, I'm not going to argue with your 'source' about John Wayne's character though I would encourage you to evaluate 'military.com' before attributing it in a discussion. I don't know if he was a coward or not. You stated he was a draft dodger. My response is he didn't have to dodge the draft because, as a married man, he was exempt. Link all the internet hit pieces you care to and it won't change that simple fact

It's not a fact. In 1944 his draft status was changed to 1-A, like hundreds of thousands of other previously 3-A men (when the war had gotten bigger and gone on longer than the original 1-A pool could support. AFTER his status was changed to 1-A by the draft board, he had his studio pressure the draft board to change it to 2-A.

There are other hundreds sources - including his biographies - that are not "internet hit pieces" but you're not going to read them and you wouldn't believe them if they were written by John Wayne himself.

Sorry you had to find out your hero tough-guy actor was really just a run-of-the-mill Hollywood actor without and was never a hero or a tough-guy

You're making this personal and referencing events that I can't find support for other than vague assertions.. John Wayne is not a personal hero of mine. If I were to have Hollywood 'heros' they would be more along the lines of Audie Murphy, Jimmy Stewart or John Ford. Men, recognized for bravery, who were close friends with John Wayne. Show me or link me something semi official about that status reclassification and I'll look into it. Otherwise, you're just shouting an unsubstantiated opinion to validate a position that you've taken with no support.

Still trying to find some evidence. You can link the original statute from the link above. The IIi A classification was amended in Dec 1943 and then restored in 1945. I'm still trying to find a link to that amendment and the ramifications.

Just for the record though, if John Wayne were conscripted in 1944 as a result of this amendment, do you think he would have been assigned to the 101st ... Or rather would he have been assigned to a unit like John Ford or the 1st Motion picture unit like Ronald Reagan?

The draft does prevent the free rider problem inherent to birthright citizenship. If you aren't obligated to turn up for military service when your nation is at war, it creates a free ridership issue. That is a power that should be used only at need, I think we would agree.

I am ALL for women being given the same rights and privileges as men in fighting wars. Go for it, not just sit in AC rooms and wear cool army clothes and post on Instagram, go and actually fight a war. That will show the world how strong women are!

I have a few female friends and they keep talking about how men are keeping women out of the boardroom. They never seem to complain about how men are keeping women from the battlefield where bombs are going off and bullets are whizzing around.

Written by two PhD historians - meaning they are professional researchers.

Chapter 4 details his life up to 1945

I don't care wher he would have been assigned. There were cooks, mechanics, and admin clerks in every unit including the 101st. I'll never denigrate anyone's role, it's whether or not you answer the call and whether you spend the rest of your life getting wealthy for something you never did

As others have noted, it's already the law that men 18-26 have to register for Selective Service. Failing to do so comes with a lot of penalties, so not sure why automating the process is causing such handwringing.

When it comes to women, the only reason they haven't been required is because when Selective Service was initiated the thinking was the only reason a draft would ever be reinstated is if we got into a fight requiring mass mobilization of infantry, for which a draft would be the vehicle to generate the needed numbers, and at that time women were barred from ground combat by law, so it seemed unnecessary to require them to register. Now that the ground combat exclusion policy is no longer in effect, there is no legal basis for excluding women from the requirement to register.

Odds are we would never return to a draft, but the amount of pushback on this seems to indicate that most Americans aren't ready to see a lot of female names scrolling across the screen during the Sunday morning talk shows if we got into a real shooting match, which should give pause to all those insisting that women be permitted to fill roles in ground combat units.
