Respectfully disagree with everything posted.

Trump (who I voted for twice - and will do again if he is the nominee) is not more conservative than Reagan -IMO. Different world, different eras - no need to quibble over who was more conservative.

Trump has significant shortcomings that he is unlikely to correct.
1. He's too old to be president again. Though he is healthy and lucid today that could change in a heartbeat for anyone his age and under sustained pressure. Simple human fact.
2. He is terribly undisciplined. He loves being in the spot light, but does not do the unglamorous work to be prepared to pass good legislation, hire good people or execute well prepared executive orders.
3. He is self absorbed in the extreme. See uncountable references to loyalty too…him. Not the country or policy - him.
4. Because of 2 and 3 he does not often hire (or retrain) good people. Look at litany of terrible hires in his first term.
5. He's not a fiscal conservative. Debt spending in first 4 years as evidence.
6. He did not build the wall. He managed a pause to illegal immigration; which has since been overrun.
7. He did not drain the swamp - it is more powerful than ever.
8. He was unprepared for election fraud before the 2020 election, after or today. He has no plan. He supported the RNC head.
I could go on…..

Desantis is effective at implementing lasting policy in his state. He's disciplined, prepared, young and relentless.

Voters have a right to choose who they want as a representative. We should have competitive primaries. They should make everyone better who participates. Embracing Trump is everything wrong from an analytical starting point. It's not about the man. It's about the country.

Regardless - the cliche remains true - we get the government we deserve. We look like the republican primary voters want Trump again. That's what we will appear to be getting.

When he is unprepared to challenge massive mail in voter fraud before or after the election. Own it. When he can't get good people to work for him and embraces Laura Loomer types (or Michael Coen, Roger Stone, past his prime Rudy Gulianni) etc.. don't be surprised. It's of his own making because it always has to be about him. He needs help, but can't get it or does not prepare to find it.

DeSantis is a weak orator.

He is a little too wonkish for most.

He's great off the cuff, not so good at connecting on a debate stage

I think for better or worse he's a policy nerd and that's all that he cares about, and he refuses to get into the low brow meme bs that Trump brings to table (just look how that worked for Rubio in '16). That doesn't work currently when a big chunk of the electorate doesn't care about policy and just wants yell "owned!!!" at people on the internet. It is what it is but will hopefully go back to normal after '24.

You can't out low brow Trump. It's an exercise in futility.

DeSantis is good off the cuff. This campaign didn't get him enough time doing that in front of a national audience.

Agreed. When Rubio made the small hands joke in the debate it was just off and not natural. Fits the old saying about not wrestling with pigs.

Should DeSantis have embraced Trump at the beginning? . . .

I think once he threw his hat in the ring no amount trying to hug it out was going to work. Aim for the king better not miss, etc.

At least Ted Cruz isn't being accused of cheating or his family being linked to JFK''s assassin this go round. That's kind of like hugging it out.

So, is he going to ask Haley to be his VP candidate?
If he does, it will be fun to watch all the posters here crawfish to tell us what a great decision it was to pick her and how good she is.

What's truly baffling is Haley's rise to even or ahead of DeSantis
She's not that good of a politician,
has no built in constituency ,
has no policy points that she is winning on
is not really a conservative and
she is probably going to get to the convention with the second most delegates

Because she talks like she's conservative and most of the country has zero clue about her record in SC. Everyone that has heard her speak since this started sees a strong conservative outside of possibly 1-2 topics.

Im confused why this board almost unanimously says she's not. We are ignoring the rest of the country that doesn't follow politics like we do.

DeSantis' problem is that his PR and social media team are morons.

Almost everyone who is following elections this early are political drama junkies on Facebook and Twitter, with everyone else getting their news from pundits like Tim Pool.

The media team for DeSantis decided to take on an antagonistic stance to everything, including policy opinions, anything relating to Florida, other candidates, and even good natures jokes that were directed towards him. Social media junkies and pundits don't like it, pundits talk him down on shows and blow up meaningless things like boot-gate and DeSantis' smile, and then public opinion falls like a rock.

Senate might be a good option. Or a high level cabinet position should Trump win.

Otherwise, a talk show? Something to keep him top of mind in 2028. By then, we will probably have a whole new set of candidates

First, I really like Ron DeSantis. Running for president does have a piece that is personality. Ron was horrible in this regard. He needs to understand you can have the best policy but if you cannot get people to like it/you then it is not going to get off the ground.

Secondly, It may be time to rethink your position. If Trump wins primary and it is him versus Biden then the choice should be pretty simple. You can opine how you do not personally like Trump but he is better than Biden if you believe in anything conservative. Even if you get to a point where you say he is less liberal than Biden it is still better than Biden. I do not think he is liberal but that is what a lot of what people try to argue.

Trump hurts your future and your children's future less than Biden. Vote Trump.

I don't see Trump winning in November.

If Trump didn't run, Desantis would easily be the frontrunner for the nomination (especially if Trump endorsed him), but he's been forced to spend his campaign talking about Trump.

If Desantis was the GOP nominee, I think he easily wins in November.

Trump very likely cost us the 2024 election.

Cabinet positions rarely give anyone enough exposure to keep them relevant. Senate is a maybe there but he'd probably need more than one term since he doesn't have Obama's race card. A prime time Fox News show? That might do it if conservatives can bring themselves to watch Fox again.

That is who I think he picks as his VP.

Don't forget that DeSantis decided at the very beginning that he would ignore the mainstream media and would just go to friendly conservative media.

This says everything you need to know about how politically smart DeSantis is. He threw away free media. He didn't think he needed it.

I like DeSantis a lot but he is a terrible candidate and ran a terrible campaign. He's not likable (to most casual observers) and fails to connect when speaking to a crowd. It's incredibly hard to do. Cruz has a similar problem and I love him.

He is fantastic at governing, picking issues, and getting things accomplished. I think he would make an outstanding president.

It will be interesting to see he and Cruz go at it in 4 years. Cruz is smarter though.

Conviction by November is unlikely and of course it can be appealed. If SCOTUS decides states can remove Trump from the ballot for insurrection that might be an opening for Haley or DeSantis
It won't matter if it's appealed to many voters. The conviction will seal it for them.
