Actually, Newsom already spoke about this a couple of weeks ago. I wonder why he thought he might need to act.

He was committed to appointing both a black woman and someone who would only serve as a caretaker for the remainder of the term and not enter the election. That made Barbara Lee (age 77) livid.

Newsome's electability has 2 parts: the party and the public. He'll want to walk the line. He'll demonstrate loyalty by selecting a loyalist. But if that loyalist has the facade of a left leaning moderate, it'll help him to mascaraed as one as well.

That would be risky for Newsom, politically to diss Congresswoman Lee who is running for the seat. When Newsom appointed Alex Padilla (I know, I know who?) for Kamala's seat, he got grief for not appointing a black woman.

OTOH, Schiff is heavily backed by Pelosi so can he afford to tick her off by appointing Lee and messing with the Dem primary in that way?

Maybe he makes a deal with Pelosi to name her as the placeholder since she's not going to run again anyway?

If she saw a way to increase her power and riches, yes.

IIRC, shortly after losing the Speakship to McCarthy, she said she would retire, then a few weeks ago, she basically, unofficially announced she was running again for her seat. May have just been the vodka talking, but it wouldn't surprise me.

If he does as he says and only appoints a placeholder, and selects a person not too out-of-step with the party as a whole, I think there is little risk for him. The campaigning for the primary is going to ratchet up in a few months, and that is going to suck all the oxygen out of the room. People aren't going to pay much attention to the lame duck he appoints, which is going to be a D vote regardless.
