Even if it does well it's still isolating people from supporting Disney further. Disney is still alienating a good part of its core audience. There are plenty of parents who aren't letting their kids see The Little Mermaid or any new Disney or Disney related movies.M1Buckeye said:tylercsbn9 said:

It's apparently doing very well.

Haven't seen the new Little Mermaid, honestly won't. Not because of racial issues, just because I'm not a huge Disney movie fan (I do love Pixar movies) and as a straight white male I know I'm not the target audience.
I wasn't for Ariel being recasted as black. Let's take the whole sea creature thing out of it. The Little Mermaid is a Danish fairy tale. Now let me ask you this, how many black Danish people have you seen in your life? Especially hundreds of years ago, I would imagine few to none. Even as of today 93% of Denmark is white. Not hard to imagine that when this fairy tale was created that number was probably closer to 100%.
Shouldn't blacks now be offended that they rarely get true characters of their own? Why do they get stuck with hand me downs? Isn't that far more racist and offensive?
Look at the Tiana character. Tiana was well received by audiences (of all races including whites and even the evil "racist" conservative whites) in general and has become a great princess for black girls. I've only seen Princess and the Frog once (again I'm not the target audience) but I thought it was an enjoyable movie for what it was. Tiana is an example of a character done right. They actually took the time to give her a proper backstory and a story and personality black girls could relate to and look up to. They didn't make Sleepy Beauty or Snow White black. I would argue doing that would have been the cheap and easy way out and honestly would've been a disrespect to black girls. This is what Disney is doing now, taking the cheap and easy way out.
The reason Tiana was well received by all audiences is because she was an authentic black princess and was a character black girls could relate to. She wasn't a white princess repackaged as a black princess.
If Disney really wanted a black mermaid, why not create a new mermaid story? A new mermaid character? They wouldn't have had the backlash they are having now (at a time where they don't need any additional backlash) and it would've IMO been far more respectful of the black race. Giving the black race a hand me down that will never truly be theirs honestly is a pretty big slap in the face IMO. Whether you like it or not The Little Mermaid is a Danish fairy tale and Ariel will always be associated as a white princess. After this live action movie is forgotten, when you go to a Disney theme park Ariel will be white. Just like Cinderella is still white despite that ridiculous live action movie with Brandy. How many of you all even remember that movie? So in essence you are robbing black girls of a real chance to have a mermaid princess of their own.
And why is it only blacks they care about? Why not make Ariel Hispanic? I haven't seen them make any traditional white princesses hispanic yet. Is that not racist? I'd remind Disney there are far more hispanics in this country than there are blacks. Do hispanic girls not deserve a mermaid character to look up to? Blacks are barely the #2 minority in the U.S. anymore. When white inevitably become the minority in this country it will be hispanics, not blacks, that will become the majority. And why is it that girls can only look up to princesses or characters of their own race?
So why not make Ariel hispanic? Where are the hispanic princess? Heck where are the Asian princesses (I don't count Mulan)? Is it also not racist that they only seem to care about remaking traditional white princess as black characters?
If Disney had just done an original mermaid princess movie with an original mermaid character this backlash would not have happened. But they took the cheap and easy way out and IMO deserve the backlash. Am I losing my mind like some people are about Ariel being black, not at all. I'm not going to see the movie but also understand I'm not the target audience. But being against Ariel being recast as black is not racist.

Can you at least admit it's Disney being lazy AF and intentionally trying generate interest through lazy pot stirring rather than actually coming up with quality new products?

I think it is them appealing to an audience that is not you.
This is Ariel is a Grammy nominated artist who has been on Disney, along with other shows.
So can you accept she is talented? And while a minority, might have had the best voice?

So why was it important for her to be Ariel? And put her in a movie that is a pale shadow of a classic?
Why not do a feature film all for her to showcase her talent?
If there wasn't another reason to do it....

So if a white person has the best voice and audition for a character that is/was traditionally black then it should go to the white person right? I'll anxiously await for the first white Black Panther. Maybe we should reboot the X Men series and have a white girl for Storm while we're at it. What about a Hispanic to play Luke Cage?Tanya 93 said:Maroon Dawn said:Tanya 93 said:

Why couldn't they have made a movie with a new princess who is black and a new storyline instead of using a recycled princess and recycled storyline? Wouldn't that be better for black girls? A princess who is truly one of their own?
I'm not saying the black actress isn't talented. I've never heard of her until this and haven't heard her voice but I never debated her talent. But this wasn't the right role for her.
If Disney really wanted another black princess they should've come up with a new princess and a new story. That's what many of us are tired of, seeing white characters recast as black instead of just being creative and developing new black characters. It's honestly not a big thing to ask.

Because they are remaking so many.
This movie does not stick to the story. So why does it matter if she isn't white?
coconutED said:
Plenty of reasons to not like the new remake even without the race swapping.
Like the inflated run time.
And the cringetastic new "musical" numbers.
Or the complete emasculation of the prince:
Remember this?
Yup, it's gone. Wanna know who defeats Ursula now? Take a wild guess...

The first film doesn't follow the story
So why is it so important Ariel is white to many posters?
Does Halle Bailey not do a good job? Sings those songs perfectly?
Why should so many focus on Ariel not being white when no one gives a **** she actually ends up with the prince?
Is that really being a fan of Hans Christian Anderson?
Hell, "Once on this Island" is a way more accurate version than "The Little Mermaid."
