Haven't seen the new Little Mermaid, honestly won't. Not because of racial issues, just because I'm not a huge Disney movie fan (I do love Pixar movies) and as a straight white male I know I'm not the target audience.

I wasn't for Ariel being recasted as black. Let's take the whole sea creature thing out of it. The Little Mermaid is a Danish fairy tale. Now let me ask you this, how many black Danish people have you seen in your life? Especially hundreds of years ago, I would imagine few to none. Even as of today 93% of Denmark is white. Not hard to imagine that when this fairy tale was created that number was probably closer to 100%.

Shouldn't blacks now be offended that they rarely get true characters of their own? Why do they get stuck with hand me downs? Isn't that far more racist and offensive?

Look at the Tiana character. Tiana was well received by audiences (of all races including whites and even the evil "racist" conservative whites) in general and has become a great princess for black girls. I've only seen Princess and the Frog once (again I'm not the target audience) but I thought it was an enjoyable movie for what it was. Tiana is an example of a character done right. They actually took the time to give her a proper backstory and a story and personality black girls could relate to and look up to. They didn't make Sleepy Beauty or Snow White black. I would argue doing that would have been the cheap and easy way out and honestly would've been a disrespect to black girls. This is what Disney is doing now, taking the cheap and easy way out.

The reason Tiana was well received by all audiences is because she was an authentic black princess and was a character black girls could relate to. She wasn't a white princess repackaged as a black princess.

If Disney really wanted a black mermaid, why not create a new mermaid story? A new mermaid character? They wouldn't have had the backlash they are having now (at a time where they don't need any additional backlash) and it would've IMO been far more respectful of the black race. Giving the black race a hand me down that will never truly be theirs honestly is a pretty big slap in the face IMO. Whether you like it or not The Little Mermaid is a Danish fairy tale and Ariel will always be associated as a white princess. After this live action movie is forgotten, when you go to a Disney theme park Ariel will be white. Just like Cinderella is still white despite that ridiculous live action movie with Brandy. How many of you all even remember that movie? So in essence you are robbing black girls of a real chance to have a mermaid princess of their own.

And why is it only blacks they care about? Why not make Ariel Hispanic? I haven't seen them make any traditional white princesses hispanic yet. Is that not racist? I'd remind Disney there are far more hispanics in this country than there are blacks. Do hispanic girls not deserve a mermaid character to look up to? Blacks are barely the #2 minority in the U.S. anymore. When white inevitably become the minority in this country it will be hispanics, not blacks, that will become the majority. And why is it that girls can only look up to princesses or characters of their own race?

So why not make Ariel hispanic? Where are the hispanic princess? Heck where are the Asian princesses (I don't count Mulan)? Is it also not racist that they only seem to care about remaking traditional white princess as black characters?

If Disney had just done an original mermaid princess movie with an original mermaid character this backlash would not have happened. But they took the cheap and easy way out and IMO deserve the backlash. Am I losing my mind like some people are about Ariel being black, not at all. I'm not going to see the movie but also understand I'm not the target audience. But being against Ariel being recast as black is not racist.

It's apparently doing very well.
Even if it does well it's still isolating people from supporting Disney further. Disney is still alienating a good part of its core audience. There are plenty of parents who aren't letting their kids see The Little Mermaid or any new Disney or Disney related movies.

These same people will also not be visiting the theme parks in future years and would've most likely been part of the core audience that Disney tries to get to its theme parks. Those kids who don't grow up going to Disney theme parks a few times as a kid will be far less likely as an adult to go visit the Disney theme parks. And anyone who has been at Disney the last few years knows that the adult Disney fans are almost as lucrative of a market for Disney as the traditional family market.

So those adults won't go to Disney and then won't take their kids to Disney either. So many adults go to Disney even without kids because they grew up going at least one every few years on vacation back when Disney wasn't political. Disney long term is probably going to lose a good bit of younger Millennials and Gen Z due to the politics and that will hurt the company big time.

This is Ariel is a Grammy nominated artist who has been on Disney, along with other shows.

So can you accept she is talented?

So why was it important for her to be Ariel? And put her in a movie that is a pale shadow of a classic?

Why not do a feature film all for her to showcase her talent?

If there wasn't another reason to do it....

This movie does not stick to the story. So why does it matter if she isn't white?

Is the storyline and acting less important than look?

Lots of movies are like that.
But why the angst over a character in a movie most of you will not see simply because you think it is woke and not the best actor?

So if a white person has the best voice and audition for a character that is/was traditionally black then it should go to the white person right? I'll anxiously await for the first white Black Panther. Maybe we should reboot the X Men series and have a white girl for Storm while we're at it. What about a Hispanic to play Luke Cage?

Why couldn't they have made a movie with a new princess who is black and a new storyline instead of using a recycled princess and recycled storyline? Wouldn't that be better for black girls? A princess who is truly one of their own?

I'm not saying the black actress isn't talented. I've never heard of her until this and haven't heard her voice but I never debated her talent. But this wasn't the right role for her.

If Disney really wanted another black princess they should've come up with a new princess and a new story. That's what many of us are tired of, seeing white characters recast as black instead of just being creative and developing new black characters. It's honestly not a big thing to ask.

The Little Mermaid made $185m globally over the holiday weekend with about 2/3 coming from domestic box offices. This makes it the fifth-biggest opening in history for the Memorial Day weekend.

Reports have also come in that reviewers are sabotaging online ratings in international markets.

The question is not why are you mad she is not white?
The question is why couldn't they come up with a wonderful unique original story for such a wonderful talent to star in?

Unless you had another reason to want someone of a certain skin color in that role.

It is 100% about rewriting racial history. Take Peter Pan and Wendy. The only white guy in the movie? The villain. Oh and the lost boys CAN be girls.

Let's forget that the entire premise behind the lost boys is that girls are too clever to fall out of their prams and that is a central way that Peter tries to suck up to Wendy and why he likes her.

Take the racial washing and rewriting of historical fiction in TV, literature, and movies?

What's the purpose?

You know what the Nazis did in the lead up to the holocaust to brainwash people?

They made EVERY single villain in their cinema a Jew or Gypsy or a Black.

Hollywood is going thatbdirection with white males...it's the straight white males who are now almost exclusively the villains in many of these movies. The Knives Out series on Netflix?

The latest one was a total allegory for how white men have stolen everything from BIPOC....the Mona Lisa? A symbol of western accomplishment and how in order to move forward we must kill the white male who has stolen everything and destroy western society.....as the POC heroine intentionally lights the painting to flame.

Seriously Tanya....Hollywood is different than the highschool theater productions u put on as a teacher.

I would be in 100% agreement with you if all these recasting weren't going one way and a disturbing trend was not developing.

But tell me you would be on Board with a white MLK or white Jackie Robinson and I will cede this point to you and admit that I was totally in the wrong

Plenty of reasons to not like the new remake even without the race swapping.

Like the inflated run time.

And the cringetastic new "musical" numbers.

Or the complete emasculation of the prince:
Remember this?

Yup, it's gone. Wanna know who defeats Ursula now? Take a wild guess...

You just listed the perfect gripe for EVERY remake that shamelessly plugs in a new cast that check skin color / gender boxes.

  • Karate Kid in China with Will Smith's kid
  • Annie
  • Ocean's 8
  • Ghostbusters
  • Even the "you go girl" scene in the finale of End Game
  • Now the Little Mermaid

I don't care if they're good movies or not. Have the decency to write a legit story vs stealing one from the past and slapping an Affirmative Action sticker over the top of it. Just pathetic

BTW, as the father of a strong latina girl, I LOVE it when it's done well and is authentic. Raya, Moana, etc. were done well imo.

The first film doesn't follow the story

So why is it so important Ariel is white to many posters?

Does Halle Bailey not do a good job? Sings those songs perfectly?

Why should so many focus on Ariel not being white when no one gives a **** she actually ends up with the prince?

Is that really being a fan of Hans Christian Anderson?

Hell, "Once on this Island" is a way more accurate version than "The Little Mermaid."

Are many movies over-indexing on minorities right now? Probably. Is it a big deal? Not really.

I mean where was the outrage when they over-indexed on white people, even over and above being the majority?

I can only imagine so many people here find it offensive is because it somehow feels like punishment. But it's not about them.

Heck, there wasn't a single black Disney princess until 2009. That's over 80 years of Disney princesses without a black one. Where was the outrage from this board over that?

It's also really weird that the most outraged group about a movie for girls is grown men. The girls don't care.

It was never intended to be a faithful telling of the original story, it's a near beat for beat remake of the Disney version...trying to tie it back to the original story is just a distraction.

The Disney remakes have gotten progressively worse with each attempt and it seems like this follows that trend.

Or I simply don't think Ariel needs to be white?

Why do you think she does?

The movie can suck for you if you don't like the story in this version.

But posters are whining about the movie before seeing it because Ariel isn't white

And there is no debate on this. They don't think Halle Bailey being cast is a good thing.
