Remakes made since then have been colossal money-burning flops - Mulan in 2020 (it didnt have a traditional theatrical release though so who knows)...and Pinocchio (also the worst rated live action disney remake)
I'm not surprised Pinocchio didn't do well. The movie hasn't aged as well as many (most?) of the other classics.

Little Mermaid is from the Disney Renaissance. It, along with Beauty & The Beast probably saved them from bankruptcy when they were released.

Cause Pinocchio is creepy AF. I mean the turning to life, the drinking, the smoking, the donkeys, the whale.

Disney released images of Sebastian and Flounder and they are getting panned on Twitter for being too realistic.

Not sure this one will be a hit. Too much weirdness around casting and animation and too much anti-Disney sentiment floating around.

Pinocchio gave me nightmares as a kid. I was afraid I would turn into a jackass.

Its certainly common. But many of Disney's movies are based at least partially on fairy tales. Snow White not having parents, Cinderella not having parents, Rapunzel taken from her parents, Tarzan's parents being killed, Mogli being raised by wolves, Aladdin having no family… These are all part of the original fairy tales or stories.

Of course Disney has some original stories like the Lion King where the parent(s) die anyway. But it would just be the Lion Prince if he dad never died.

The lion king was Hamlet minus the Oedipal complex and unhappy ending.

Disney had zero original animated works prior to pixar.

Even Frozen was based on the Fairy Tale of the Ice Queen.

This movie is going to be such a colossal failure
I have a feeling it's going to do quite well - at least as well as some of the other live action Disney princess movies, and maybe better. Maybe not Aladdin, but I don't think of that as a princess movie even though there's a princess in it. I'm going to say at least $500 million, but it may very well double that.

I am shocked that is your opinion.

$48.3M for the first day at the domestic box office. Puts it at #1 in front of Fast X. I saw somewhere that it's expected to make $130M by the end of opening weekend (including Monday). We'll see how far it climbs.

The Lion King is Hamlet

While this is certainly true, one thing that tends to get missed by many is Shakespear wasn't the originator of the Hamlet story. He just did it way better then anyone else.
