Its certainly common. But many of Disney's movies are based at least partially on fairy tales. Snow White not having parents, Cinderella not having parents, Rapunzel taken from her parents, Tarzan's parents being killed, Mogli being raised by wolves, Aladdin having no family… These are all part of the original fairy tales or stories.

Of course Disney has some original stories like the Lion King where the parent(s) die anyway. But it would just be the Lion Prince if he dad never died.

I have a feeling it's going to do quite well - at least as well as some of the other live action Disney princess movies, and maybe better. Maybe not Aladdin, but I don't think of that as a princess movie even though there's a princess in it. I'm going to say at least $500 million, but it may very well double that.

$48.3M for the first day at the domestic box office. Puts it at #1 in front of Fast X. I saw somewhere that it's expected to make $130M by the end of opening weekend (including Monday). We'll see how far it climbs.
