Tsunamis are very coast line and bathymetric specific. You would think all the nuclear bomb tests would have engulfed the islands given their relative height to sea level. I'm skeptical of the size. They have a very limited areas that it would have that sort of water impact. Radiation? Not as sure on that, but it's amazing how much sea floor and water shift is needed to create a measurable and trackable tsunami.

I think Elon genuinely wants to see this war end, he helped the Ukraine people with star link, now he thinks they can have "safe and free" elections ( where have we seen this before ? ) over those areas…. The problem is that Russia would only listen if the results were in their favor.. otherwise they would be right back doing what they are doing today .. Putin is going to get driven out of the Ukraine in due time

This radiation would be different. If this is specifically cobalt 60 radiation it would be way more dangerous than the general radiation found in a nuclear power plant. Cobalt 60 has a perfect half-life that makes it extremely dangerous.

He may have lost 80m, but it was perfect publicity for what Starlink can do.

Now if starts complaining about Ukraine not settling for peace right now and pulls Starlink away from them. Man that publicity nightmare will be epic for him

Exactly. It may have cost $80M, but it was worth many multiples in publicity and future sales based on their performance and the goodwill of supporting the right side.

A smart person would realize what he's doing threatens to undo all of that regardless of the reasons.

I don't think the US government would look to fondly on him for pulling Starlink now. US is too invested now for him to pullout.
Also, does Musk not see what neutral entails with russia? Its just an open invitation to try again later.

Elon needs to remember that he has to work with the US government to get SpaceX off the ground. Literally.

The sub carries this supposed cobalt nuclear torpedo which is designed to detonate offshore. The shaped blast would theoretically cause a massive tsunami of radioactive water to engulf a coastal city. Fun times.
Theoretically, how massive of a tsunami? 20 feet? 30 feet? 100 feet? What is the yield on that. if you know.
Theoretically, the tsunami could be over a kilometer high depending on yield and other factors like seafloor geography and distance from the detonation. That being said, the yield is likely far, far lower. The danger in these things is they travel very slowly and don't make much noise so they are difficult to track until they are close to the target and begin their final acceleration pattern before detonation. The cobalt causes increased radioactive fallout in the water. While an underwater detonation largely protects the surface and atmosphere from radiation, the seabed would be contaminated for decades and the radioactive salts would filter through along the coastline along an extended range.

I mean, do realize that the radioactive water would not be in the tsunami wave. It would stay close to the explosion.

Waves don't move towards shore, they move up and down.

Maybe.

But he's not wrong.

Starlink helped Ukraine a whole, whole hell of a lot. And he gave it to them for free. And there are risks.

I sure wish y'all would stop using the phrase "the Ukraine". It's a Russian phrase and people need to realize it's simply Ukraine. THE implies it's not a sovereign state, but simply a territory or outcropping of another state. Fix yourselves!

Apparently free for them but not 100% *free*. I don't typically cite WaPo as a source but since this article is from April, its release can't possibly be linked to today's events. Makes Musk's posturing all the more interesting, if true.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/04/08/us-quietly-paying-millions-send-starlink-terminals-ukraine-contrary-spacexs-claims/

Another article. Portion donated, portion purchased.

https://www.republicworld.com/science/space/spacex-donates-3667-starlink-terminals-worth-10-dollars-million-for-internet-in-ukraine-reports-articleshow.html

From WaPo (since it seems to be paywalled unless you link via Twitter):

"…according to documents obtained by The Technology 202, the U.S. federal government is in fact paying millions of dollars for a significant portion of the equipment and for the transportation costs to get it to Ukraine.

On Tuesday, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) announced it has purchased more than 1,330 terminals from SpaceX to send to Ukraine, while the company donated nearly 3,670 terminals and the Internet service itself.

While the agency initially called it a "private sector donation valued at roughly $10 million," it did not specify how much it is contributing for the equipment or for the cost of transportation.

USAID agreed to purchase closer to 1,500 standard Starlink terminals for $1,500 apiece and to pay an additional $800,000 for transportation costs, documents show, adding up to over $3 million in taxpayer dollars paid to SpaceX for the equipment sent to Ukraine.

In a letter to SpaceX last month outlining the deal, the USAID mission director to Ukraine said the terminals would be "procured" and sent on behalf of USAID by a third-party contractor, which would "arrange for transportation and delivery of the equipment" from Los Angeles International Airport to Ukraine via Poland.

The letter said the nearly 3,670 terminals donated by SpaceX would come with three months of "unlimited data." In addition to the more than 1,330 terminals that USAID confirmed it had purchased, the agency earlier agreed to buy a separate 175 units from SpaceX, according to the documents.

On Thursday, USAID spokesperson Rebecca Chalif said in a statement that the "delivery of Starlink terminals were made possible by a range of stakeholders, whose combined contributions valued over $15 million and facilitated the procurement, international flights, ground transportation, and satellite Internet service of 5,000 Starlink terminals."

It's likely a deception. If it were just captured equipment, the risk would be from friendly fire.

That's not to say that the equipment they're using wasn't abandoned or captured.

The Russian and Ukraine army's equipment overlap perhaps, what, 75%? They have the same Soviet planes, tanks, trucks, apcs, guns, artillery and so on.

Yes also vehicles have changed hands several times too. Ukes have captured and put a lot of Russian gear back into service.
