That's an incredibly tight turning radius to make it back to the launchpad that quickly at speed. Are we sure that isn't shopped?
I've viewed that video 30 times if I've watched it once but only on my phone and it's well done if it's a fake. But like you, I couldn't wrap my head around the g forces needed to turn that missile like that.

It appears to decelerate at the start of the turn which seems non sensical. But that's when it turns towards the camera so it's angular movement relative to the observer would be expected to diminish a bit.

At first I was also thinking the control fins would be too small, the rocket too heavy, and the velocity too slow early in the flight to make that turn.

Then I looked up the S-300 and at first glance, it appears to have no fins and seems to rely on thrust vectoring for maneuvering. That, accounts for all those anomalies.

The explosion fireworks aren't from the small warhead, it's the solid rocket motor coming apart at impact/detonation and fragments burning on their way back to the ground.

I think it's real.

Further in that thread was a second video from a different angle.

Thanks for the pointer. I don't think that reply had been posted when I saw the initial video. Going back through the thread they now posted satellite images of the the impact location.

The rocket didn't actually go right back to the launchpad. The other video shows it rounded off to the left of where it was launched, so not quite as sharp a turn as it appears in the main video going around

As you noted, I also think the angle makes it look like the rocket slowed down more than it didit just started moving toward the camera

Hopefully, no innocents were harmed but who knows

Russia scores an own goal:

Jeez. I'd say that those guys probably sh*t their pants, but you barely have time to get a turtle head with that one. Probably never even it cotton. Hopefully it smoked a few of em though. Ukes could use a few easy wins. That's quite the u-turn! Damnit! Puts it all into perspective.

At first I thought it was an iskander but with there already being three smoke trails it would more likely be a S-300. Seems like it turns and and then hits its second stage

Russia is ramping up their activity from Belarus recently.

Russia has been preparing the battlefield in Ukraine and eastern Europe for years. Despite bumbling opening moves it was never an off-the-cuff operation.

"Ukraine is running out of shells for the majority of its artillery in part because of a clandestine Russian campaign of bullying and sabotage over the past eight years, including bombings of key munitions depots across Eastern Europe that officials have linked to Moscow, according to Ukrainian government officials and military analysts."

Paywall.

Question? Does the article specify where in Eastern Europe? In NATO nations for instance?

Just stumbled across this Rudyard Kipling quote:

"Let it be clearly understood that the Russian is a delightful person till he tucks in his shirt. As an Oriental he is charming. It is only when he insists on being treated as the most easterly of western peoples instead of the most westerly of easterns that he becomes a racial anomaly extremely difficult to handle."

Rather racist from today's perspective but speaks to the longstanding problem of understanding the Russian mind.

Not surprising considering there were reports that the Ukrainians got the order to retreat. Still, I hope they took out a lot of Russians here.

Smaller scale it did in a few places up north during the initial invasion. Including the initial battle for Hostomel.

The war has settled down into exactly the type of fight Russia is best at. Their "lightning" strike in the invasion they simply don't have the experience or training to pull off and were butchered in job lots for it. I still doubt their VDV units have recovered yet.

But as word spreads, every Russky needing to go will be second guessing himself, holding it in and in general being paranoid about his surroundings. Long term psyops.

Thought the same thing. The buildings don't seem to be ammo storage, nor are there any armored vehicles visible.

Doesn't appear to be large caliber artillery. I do, however, appreciate the psychological factor. They know they are being watched.

Does that grenade have fragmentation, meaning is it likely that soldier is wounded?

He went from being more or less cosmopolitan early in his career to a champion of British imperialism after a few bad things happened to him (a small man, he was bullied while living in Vermont), to bitterly racist after his son was killed in WW I. Kind of a sad descent and very damaging to his legacy.

If you can average anywhere close to one killed or injured per round, you're doing amazing work. The Russians are firing 50k rounds per day and not having this kind of effect.
