They soak up bullets and then Russia can parade the bodies in front of Ukrainians and the world as propaganda saying "Look! The Ukrainian military is committing atrocities against its own people!" while they deny having conscripted the guys in the first place.

It allows them to muddy the water regarding genocide and war crimes. The principle of making it to where lots of people decide that they can't determine who is really the bad guy and devolve into apathy. A lot of what they did in Donbas since 2014. So, yeah, it's a demented benefit but, to their thinking, still a benefit.

And here I am thinking through ways they could adjust the load by canting the barrels up and having the blocking on the next piece instead of on the floor to fit more artillery pieces in.

Probably a gross weight issue instead of a fir more in situation I guess.
Other way round. Lifters are typically cubed out well before they reach max weight.

Here's a better shot of a different C-17 being loaded with M777s. The blocking appears to support the barrel up enough to fit between the raised spades of the following gun. RAAF


You're probably correct. The M777 has a gross weight of 9600 pounds as compared to the 15,800 pounds for the M198 that it replaced. BAE used a lot of titanium in the M777 to get the weight down to the levelhat it could be sling loaded under an Osprey.

Don't take any of this as me agreeing with, condoning, and admiring what they are doing...but if your main goal is to smoke out where the enemy's heavy weapons and concealed firing positions are, the easiest way to find them is to send somebody down to "attack" them and watch where they get killed from. Then you can target those spots for artillery, helicopter, MLRS, ground attack aircraft, or missiles. It is a really terrible and brutal way to fight a war, but the Russians have done it forever that way. Their people are expendable to them, their newest equipment is not. So send out a group of conscripts in old T72s to draw the fire from the anti-tank defenses, and then attack those defenses using other means once they are exposed. If the conscript believes that you will go back and harm his family if he refuses, what choice does he have? The Chechens are there to make sure the conscripts don't turn their guns back to the east.

Explosions yesterday didn't turn up any damage that we know of so the speculation that it was just sonic booms may have been correct. We will see if anything more comes of these.

That plus being the sticky wicket in any NATO and/or EU actions against Russia. It would also be beneficial to Russia to have a pro-Russian NATO/EU member serve as a buffer between a newly conquered Ukraine and, say, Poland and Czechia.

RCH395 C17 is 30,000 feet over Poland right now from Gander and likely about to descend. Of note is they highlighted the C17 from the Alaska National Guard. I wonder if that was on purpose Jab at the ruskies.



I have the feeling the forecast for eastern Ukraine for next week is RAIN. Indirect Fire raining death on the russians. Godspeed.

Orban has been interesting since his push to begin allowing Chinese reach into Hungary via the Fudan University project. There have been definite actions that make one consider whether Orban and Fidesz's preferred alignment might genuinely be with Russia/China.

Orban seemed to be a good leader that pushed back against the EU over border incursions ordered by the EU of Muslim immigrants, wanted to reward his population to have children, etc.

Now? Not that sure about him. He could be the next Hungarian dictator...who knows?

Orban is annoyance. But ultimately, who cares about Hungary? Worse come to worse, cut them off from NATO intelligence sharing and shut down military assistance. Has there ever been a more quintessential also-ran in European history. At least Portugal is good at soccer.

Poland has already ousted Hungary given their stance on Ukraine. I read some reports early on that the russian fsb or chinese have some real nasty blackmail crap on Orban or more.

Interesting landing area either brand new runway since 2017 or some counterintelligence going on where the C17 landed. Nothing but crops at least through May 27, 2017.



Update: actually it probably went into Rzeszow as another C17 just landed there from WrightPatterson AFB OH and RCH395 just shut off transponder before landing; the approach pattern was exactly the same.
