Supposedly shrapnel wound to his ankle. 20 other officers reportedly killed though.

Or he was already gone. Either way, he is unfortunately not out of the fight.

Translated excerpts:

Vladimir Zelensky can bring peace to the country if he forces the "neo-Nazi battalions" to stop resistance, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

"Now Zelensky can also bring peace if he stops giving criminal orders to his neo-Nazi battalions, forces them to release all civilians and stop resistance," Lavrov said in an interview with the Italian television company Mediaset.
[end translation]

He goes on to say that everything is Zelensky's fault for not complying fully with Minsk agreement, while neglecting to mention that Russia failed to live up to their end. Same old story. Different rules for Russia.

I can't believe that Italian media is providing the platform for Russian propaganda but at least their government isn't run by the same asshats who run the media.

Translated Excerpts:

Kiev's hysterical desire to bring militants from the Mariupol plant "Azovstal" to the territory controlled by Ukraine is due to the fact that they can confirm the presence of mercenaries and, possibly, current officers of the Western armies, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

"The situation with the confrontation at the Azovstal plant in Mariupol and the persistent, even hysterical desire of Zelensky, his team and his Western patrons to achieve the conclusions of all these people and send them to the territory of Ukraine is explained by the fact that there are many characters who will confirm the presence of mercenaries, maybe active officers of the Western armies on the side of Ukrainian radicals," Lavrov said in an interview with the Italian TV company Mediaset.

Thanks to the initiative of Russian President Vladimir Putin, 80 civilians detained by Ukrainian nationalists, including women and children, were rescued from the territory of Azovstal, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported earlier on Sunday. All released civilians were evacuated to the village of Bezymennoye of the Donetsk People's Republic, where they were provided with accommodation, food and the necessary medical care.

Translated Excerpts:

There are no representatives of the private military company Wagner, which has nothing to do with the authorities of the Russian Federation, in Ukraine, but there are a huge number of mercenaries from Western countries fighting on the side of the Ukrainian military, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

"Nothing like this is observed in Ukraine, only a huge number of mercenaries from Western countries," Lavrov said in an interview with the Italian TV company Mediaset.

I think that the talk about the presence of Wagner in Ukraine is due to the desire to distract attention from what our Western colleagues are doing," the minister added.

He added that Wagner is a private military company that has nothing to do with the Russian state.

Ukraine may or may not be paying them, but there are definitely foreign nationals fighting on their behalf. On the flip side, I was under the impression that Wagner group gear had been recovered in Ukraine.

Not that it really matters, as Russia is the aggressor and Ukraine is fighting a defensive war. I'm not sure that employing mercenaries is good or bad in itself.

There are plenty of foreign nationals in Ukraine and Russia is pumping in as many as they can manage in their end, including Wagner. Posting as an exemplification of what Russian government is spinning internally and in Europe. There's lots more. Plenty of *****ing an moaning about how Russia is only trying to bring peace to the people of Ukraine, this all the US's fault, the US was going to radicalize Ukraine and park our missiles there. Insinuations that the US was a threat to invade Russia via Ukraine. I had to stop reading or my eyes were going to get stuck in the back of my head.

Russia isn't a direct party to the agreement. That's the kicker. Their proxies in Donbas (who are mixed with Russian contractors and Russian regulars) are. After Minsk 1, the proxies kept pushing and gained more territory. Then came Minsk 2. As always, Russia is trying to have their cake and eat it too while publicly holding Ukraine to a different standard than they abide by.

That is interesting. In the Soviet days, when somebody was going to disappear in a change of leadership, they usually went away for a bit to "recover from (insert malady here)" while the people taking over consolidated their power and control over the various organs of the party and military. Once they had firm control, then it was announced the the previous leader "lost a valiant struggle with (insert malady here)" or died peacefully in their sleep from a (9mm) brain hemorrhage or heart attack.

And even if they were a party to it the, soviets haven't ever signed a treaty they intended to follow. One of the main reasons the Trump administration (rightly) pulled out of the INF and open skies treaties.
